DISCURSOS PAN-AMERICANISTAS: Salvador de Mendonça, o reconhecimento da República brasileira pelos Estados Unidos e o Itamaraty (1889-1913)

Abstract

The present article aims to analyze the speeches of Salvador de Mendonca about the recognition of the Brazilian Republic by the United States government. It is intended to investigate the ideas of the intellectual about the approximation between the two countries, taking into consideration the linguistic context in which they were produced. These representations were produced within 1898 and 1913, in a period of rise of Pan-American rhetoric and escalation of US imperialism, under the legitimation of rereadings of the Monroe Doctrine. During the time when Baron of Rio Branco headed the Itamaraty, Mendonca presented to his readers a parameter of comparison between his performance and the guidelines that led the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations. His speeches constitute a defense of his public conduct as a diplomat and use rhetorical resources to achieve his objectives.
