To reach the ambitious 5G targets, a dense base station (BS) deployment paradigm is being considered. In this case, the conventional always-on service approach may not be suitable due to the linear energy/density relationship when the BSs are always kept on. This suggests a dynamic on/off BS operation to reduce the energy consumption. However, this approach may create coverage holes and the BS activation delay in terms of hardware transition latency and software reloading could result in service disruption. To tackle these issues, we propose a predictive BS activation scheme under the control/data separation architecture (CDSA). The proposed scheme exploits user context information, network parameters, BS sleep depth and measurement databases to send timely predictive activation requests in advance before the connection is switched to the sleeping BS. An analytical model is developed and closed-form expressions are provided for the predictive activation criteria. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a high BS activation accuracy with low errors w.r.t. the optimum activation time.","PeriodicalId":345352,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"465 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123054723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It attains high throughput by intelligently reusing spectrum, and brings a trade-off between energy- and spectral-efficiency. An efficient resource allocation strategy is required to significantly improve its throughput in a bid to meet the fifth-generation (5G) high data rate requirements. In this correspondence, a new resource allocation scheme for HetNet, called multi-level soft frequency reuse for HetNet (ML-SFR HetNet), is proposed which increases the throughput several fold. In ML-SFR HetNet, mutually exclusive spectrum is allocated for macro and small cell users and well as for cell edge users among the various cells in the reuse system. We derived spectrum and power allocation expression for a generalized HetNet scenario. In addition, analytical expressions for the throughput and area spectral efficiency (ASE) are also developed. The simulations results demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed scheme which improves the throughput by around 3.5 times and outage probability reduces nearly 5 times compared to traditional SFR system.","PeriodicalId":345352,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"149 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114250040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this light, this paper presents the results of an extensive measurement campaign in two iron-ore open-pit mining complexes, at the 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz bands, considering macro and small cell deployments. The study is further motivated by the rise of unmanned machinery in the mining industry. We present values of path loss exponents, shadow fading standard deviations, autocorrelation distances and inter-frequency cross-correlation, which are all useful for the future wireless network design, simulation and performance evaluation. The results show that, in order to comply with ultra-reliable communications (URC) availability requirements, larger shadowing margins will have to be considered in the network planning in open-pit mines, when compared to traditional industrial environments. Furthermore, large cross-correlation between the shadowing in both frequency bands limits the gains when using multi-connectivity in order to enhance overall network availability.","PeriodicalId":345352,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125604656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, grant free (GF) transmissions have the potential of reducing the latency with respect to traditional grant-based (GB) approaches as adopted in Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio standard. However, in case a shared channel is assigned to multiple users for GF transmissions, the occurrence of collisions may jeopardize the GF potential. In this paper, we perform a system analysis in a large urban macro network of several transmission procedures for uplink GF transmission presented in recent literature. Specifically, we study K-Repetitions and Proactive schemes along with the conventional HARQ scheme referred to as Reactive. We evaluated their performance against the baseline GB transmission as a function of the load using extensive and detailed system level simulations. Our findings show that GF procedures are capable of providing significant lower latency than GB at the reliability level of 1-e-5, even at considerable network loads. In particular, the GF Reactive scheme is shown to achieve the latency target while supporting at least 400 packets per second per cell.","PeriodicalId":345352,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124807908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, the high mobility of vehicles poses an other major challenge on efficient message disseminations. In this paper, we present a design on publish/subscribe message dissemination (DPSMD) for vehicular networks with Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). Our design consists of message brokers that provide message exchange services, message handlers that excavate the potential value of messages and message hubs that bridge different parts of the system. MEC can be made use of in DPSMD to provide low-latency message services for vehicle users, while wide- area message disseminations are also well supported. The detailed descriptions is then given, including topic designs, subscription, publishing processes and message validating. Finally, a testbed is built up to evaluate the performance of the DPSMD in terms of the average time of message distributions.","PeriodicalId":345352,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125655009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the current cellular technology is not sufficient due to its limited bandwidth in a dense vehicle environment. In this paper, we propose a protocol which integrates licensed Sub-6 GHz band, IEEE 802.11p, and mmWave communications for the content distribution in vehicular networks. The proposed protocol uses a cluster-based approach where a fuzzy logic-based algorithm is employed to select efficient gateway nodes which bridge the licensed Sub-6 GHz communication and mmWave communication in order to maximize the overall network throughput. IEEE 802.11p vehicle-to-vehicle communication is used to share information among vehicles in order for achieving efficient clustering. We conduct extensive simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol under various network conditions. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol can achieve significant improvement in various scenarios compared to the existing approaches.","PeriodicalId":345352,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115375541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a variant of polar codes that provides significant coding gain in the regime of short blocks and enables early termination of decoding processes. The overall scheme depends on distributing CRC bits in the whole information block, and a single interleaving/deinterleaving pattern can be defined to implement CRC distribution. The design can reduce the decoding latency and energy consumption of hardware, which is crucial for mobile applications like 5G.","PeriodicalId":345352,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"615 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115826304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this scheme, the information bits are jointly conveyed by the indices of spreading codes and the conventional M-ary modulated symbols. A low-complexity maximum ratio combining (MRC) detector is designed, in which the receiver first detects the selected spreading codes and then the corresponding data symbols are de-spread and demodulated. The bit error probability (BEP) upper bound and the achievable diversity order are analyzed according to the union bounding technique. Simulation results verify the analyses and show that the proposed IM-OFDM-SS outperforms the existing OFDM-IM and OFDM-SS schemes significantly.","PeriodicalId":345352,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121250154","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The performance of these processes is clearly dependent on the following SIoT aspects: i) the structure of the social network; ii) the types of service/information requests that will mostly characterize the interaction in the IoT/SIoT; iii) the rules used to navigate the social network. This paper aims at studying these aspects through simulations as follows. The importance of each type of social relationship with respect to the navigability is observed in terms of key parameters, such as the average path length, the network diameter and size of the giant component. The concepts of nodes' geographical and similarity distances are introduced to analyse the navigability; these are then used to evaluate the performance when the communications involve objects at increasing distance. Results confirm that some types of social relationships do not appear to be useful and that the introduction of the node average distance significantly changes the resulting SIoT performance.","PeriodicalId":345352,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123205168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this approach, the most \"sensitive\" channel parameter to the UAV height is chosen based on a feature selection algorithm from a parameter set consisting of nine channel parameters calculated from channel impulse responses. In the case considered here, the K-factor is found to be the most height-sensitive parameter. The behavior of the mean of K-factor is modeled as a piece-wise function against height which demonstrates a break point that is determined by assessing the contribution of height-dependent samples to the overall entropy. The residuals of subtracting the mean K-factor are statistically modeled. The results illustrate that the proposed big-data-assisted approach is applicable to provide accurate description of channel statistics versus the variables of interests.","PeriodicalId":345352,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122632942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
