A plasma-assisted slow wave oscillator (pasotron) may be operated without an external magnetic field allowing for radial motion of the electrons. This phenomenon has been exploited to achieve an increase in interaction efficiency from /spl sim/20% to /spl sim/50% by injecting electrons into the weak RF field region near the axis and having them bunch as they move axially and radially toward the surface of the slow wave circuit where RF fields are strong and efficient energy extraction occurs. Both in-situ diagnostics and analysis confirmed that the enhanced interaction efficiency is due to the fact that RF forces dominate the beam dynamics.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. A critical feature of these codes is the modeling of secondary electron emission, both the correct emission coefficients, and the correct distributions of emission angle and energy. The BSCAT code which handles the generation of secondary and backscattered electrons uses a method of ray coalescing to give a representative sample of the backscattered electrons while limiting the number of trajectories that must be traced. Recent work has focused on improving the physical model used for the MonteCarlo process of generating secondary electrons. This has involved both incorporating known, accurate models for emission characteristics, and the development of models to describe certain aspects of backscattering. Here we are showing additional examples of usage of the general approach. We have also added capabilities to the code for showing the trajectories of the electrons and for calculating the heat deposited on the collector surface.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. In our investigations of the above effect we have modelled the electron-beam generating element of the vircator using a plane crossed-field diode (magnetic gap). In the process of analyzing the effect of the strength of the magnetic field on the development of a 'virtual cathode' we have assumed, following the case of zero magnetic field, that for certain ranges of the parameters the electron now is stable, whereas for other ranges it is unstable. Our assumption was largely based on some topological similarities of the two systems. In our present work we are investigating the problem more rigorously using analytical procedures. Following some earlier work which was however limited to the case of zero magnetic field, we investigated the roots of a complex variable function in order to determine the stability properties of the system. We were then able to show that the assumptions concerning the stability of solutions are in fact justified. Furthermore we were also able to show how the ranges of instability depend on the strength of the magnetic field.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. An important role in the design of such devices is played by the numerical simulation of nonlinear nonstationary (time-dependent) processes, including complex dynamics. Several theoretical models for such simulation have been developed in previous years. However, despite the fact that the possibility of generation of chaotic oscillations in relativistic BWO had been demonstrated about two decades ago, there is still lack of knowledge about complex dynamics, especially on the scenarios of the transition to chaos. In this report we present some results of such investigation.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. So far this problem was considered under the assumption that the RF field in a gyrotron cavity is excited by an annular, ideally thin, cylindrical electron beam. However, as the wavelength shortens and the beam power increases, the spread in radii of electron guiding centers, R/sub b/, becomes more important for gyrotron operation. First, this spread reduces the efficiency because electrons with different guiding center radii have different coupling impedance to the RF field with a certain radial structure. Second, in the case of simultaneous interaction with several modes with different radial structures, the spread in guiding center radii may result in simultaneous excitation of these modes (a so-called \"weak\" coupling of modes, which extract energy from different fractions of the beam). The effect of the beam radial thickness on the mode interaction and stability is analyzed.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. The method of synthesizing the main parameters of FWTWT is studied and used for designing Ka-band devices. To verify the synthesis, the results are compared with those generated by simulation codes such as HFSS and three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) code for the estimation of cold and hot characteristics. From the synthesis, based on Pierce's small signal theory, it is shown that plasma frequency sensitivity affects the growth rate. A Ka-band folded waveguide TWT has been designed from the synthesis and is under fabrication. This will require development of high power X-band sources generating 50-100 MW per source. Calabazas Creek Research, Inc. is currently developing a travelling wave window using compact, numerically optimized, parabolic tapers to match the input diameter of 38 mm to the window ceramic diameter of 76 mm. The design is projected to handle 100 MW of pulse power with a peak field at the window face of 3.6 MV/m. Peak powers over 20 kw have been achieved. They also have low harmonic output and excellent phase performance. We have developed a double ring-loop circuit that permits electrostatic focusing of an electron beam to at least 0.4 micro pervs. This eliminates the magnet stack and further lowers cost and weight. It permits glass rod fastening of circuit elements as well as gun and collector assemblies, as is done in cathode ray tubes.
