The three designs are at different frequencies: 110 GHz, 140 GHz and 84 GHz. Common features of the three designs include single-anode, magnetron-injection electron guns, internal converters that produce a TEM/sub 00/ Gaussian output mode and CVD diamond output windows. The three designs use different cavity interaction modes and two of the designs employ collector depression to raise the overall efficiency of the gyrotron installations. Further details of the individual designs and the current status of tests on the various gyrotrons are discussed.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. The beam parameters include the beam voltage (at constant DC power) and the beam radius. A large signal (1D and 2.5D) computer program was used for this purpose, which models the interaction processes in a helix TWT and generates transfer characteristics for a given design at specified frequency values. In numerical simulations, 3D representations of this axis-symmetric magnetic field are generally built from the knowledge of experimentally measured 1D symmetry-axis values, by using a model based on equivalent ideal loop sources (Vaughan, 1972 and 1974; Stankiewicz, 1979; Jackson, 1999; Coco et al, 2001; Coco and Laudani, 2002). From these sources, off-axis fields are computed (radial and axial components), either by means of exact analytic expressions in terms of elliptic integrals or by means of approximated partial series expansions or Legendre polynomials. The ideal loop model is considered to work satisfactorily if it is able to reproduce correctly the input experimental on-axis values. In this paper a new efficient procedure to calculate the parameters of the equivalent ideal loop representation by using a neural approach is presented. The neural approach allows us to obtain a very accurate representation of complicated shape fields by using only few coils, in such a way as to reduce computational effort.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. This mode competition significantly decreases the microwave efficiency of the device. Therefore, to reduce mode competition and improve gyrotron efficiency, a good understanding of the uniformity of emission from the cathode surface is necessary. This uniformity may be described in terms of the work function of the emitter. In this study, we determine the comparative work function quality of several gyrotron cathodes through the use of simple measurement techniques. Moreover, we attempt to define and quantify the local and global amounts of work function spread for each of these cathodes.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. A new triplet gyrotron amplifier, which we call gyrotriotron, has recently been developed. The device consists of a gyro-TWT input stage to modulate the beam at S/sub 1/=1 cyclotron harmonic, a four-unit clustered-cavity as intermediate stage to bunch the beam at S/sub 2/=2 cyclotron harmonic and a gyro-TWT output stage to extract energy from the bunched beam at S/sub 3/=2 cyclotron harmonic. Electronic coupling between neighboring stages is realized through ballistic beam bunching in the radiation-free drift space similar to what happens in a gyroklystron. Since S/sub 3/=S/sub 2/=2S/sub 1/, the device is a harmonic multiplying gyrotron amplifier with a scheme of 1-2-2. The clustered-cavity employed in the gyrotriotron is a group of TE/sub 03/ mode-selected cavities, which are closely adjacent and without any coupling between them. HFSS simulation of a sub-unit of such a mode selective clustered-cavity is given. This is a first use of cluster cavity in a gyrotron. The proof-of-principle gyrotriotron with Ku-band input, Ka-band TE/sub 04/ mode output, predicted peak output power of 500 kW and 5% bandwidth, has been fabricated and is being tested in the Harmonic Gyrotron Lab at University of Maryland.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. Space communications architectures are being planned to meet the high rate data of future NASA Enterprise missions. These will require the use of traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTAs) to provide the high frequency, RF power and efficiency needed for many of the communications links. A program addressing these requirements is underway for the development of a high efficiency, 20 watt, 32 GHz TWT of reduced size and weight that is based on a novel high gain slow-wave circuit design, termed the \"finned ladder\". The finned ladder slow-wave circuit, has an exceptionally high gain per unit length. The very high RF/electron beam interaction impedance (>100 ohms) enables more than 40 dB of gain over a 5 cm length and an RF efficiency greater than 20%, which offers a significant reduction in RF circuit length and the potential for TWT miniaturization. Fabrication by micromachining techniques is being investigated.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. This has opened the door to new and exciting possibilities in vacuum electronics technology. Application of these modern microfabrication techniques to vacuum electronics now offers new prospects, including: (1) improved device efficiency by replacing thermionic cathodes with micro-fabricated field emitter cathodes, (2) reliable, precise fabrication of miniature millimeter and submillimeter wave circuits, (3) high yields and lower component costs due to batch fabrication, and (4) greater integration which can reduce piece parts assembly, increase yields, and decrease costs.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat.
