An experimental setup of two-stage tapered harmonic multiplying gyrotron traveling-wave tube is being prepared to achieve high power millimeter waves. X-band input frequencies can be multiplied and amplified by the interaction at the 3/sup rd/ harmonic of electron cyclotron frequencies with practical, inexpensive, low frequency driving sources. The required magnetic field can be also reduced to one-third of the magnetic field at the fundamental harmonic interaction. To suppress unwanted oscillations, a linearly tapered two-stage rectangular waveguide at the fundamental TE/sub 10/ mode is used at the expense of low coupling between RF waves and electrons. A previous experimental demonstration at NRL showed a 20% bandwidth at saturated gain of 25 dB with 16% efficiency when the predicted velocity spreads of 4% are assumed at the fundamental harmonic interaction of Ka-band. In this study, however, under the 3/sup rd/ harmonic multiplying interactions, a self-consistent nonlinear calculation shows a saturated gain of 23 dB, an electronic efficiency of 10%, and a bandwidth of 3% on the assumption of 4% axial velocity spreads of electrons when an axis-encircling electron beam at a moderate beam voltage of 30 kV and a current of 1 A is employed.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. Some applications require the use of low voltage, high current electron beams which in turn require special analysis and design techniques not always required by lower perveance devices. This work shows that accurate RF simulation of high perveance TWTs, even in a highly scalloping configuration, can be accomplished through the combined use of several modem TWT design tools. Studies of efficient recollection of the high-space-charge spent beam and evaluation of backward wave and diocotron instabilities is ongoing and will be important in the overall evaluation of this TWT design. RF modeling results and a full set of experimental data are presented.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. Microwave sintering approaches have been used to develop a family of AlN based composites that exhibit superior thermal conductivities and tailored dielectric losses. These materials are needed to replace toxic BeO-based composites for power microwave tube applications. Our activities concentrated on the improvement of thermal conductivity, dielectric and mechanical properties (hardness and toughness) of various aluminum nitride composites. Single phase, polycrystalline AlN with thermal conductivity up to 224 W/mK and dielectric loss of tan /spl delta/=0.01 was achieved by controlled microwave processing. The addition of controlled amounts of TiB/sub 2/ and SiC increased the dielectric losses while maintaining relatively high thermal conductivity values. These advanced AlN based composites can be used in power microwave tubes for suppression of mode competition in cavities, support helices in TWTs, and for microwave windows.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. The well known issues of this kind of TWT are the maximum allowed 2/sup nd/ harmonic level at the lower frequency range and minimum allowed efficiency at the higher frequency range. The \"negative\" dispersion of a helical slow-wave structure (SWS) is a key concept to ensure a successful operation in wideband helix TWT. In this study, an unconventional \"positive phase-velocity-tapering\" with an unequal ceramic rod was employed to enhance the second harmonic level at the lower frequencies and efficiency at the higher frequencies. The dispersion and the interaction impedance of the structure were predicted by a 3-D HFSS code.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. The traveling wave gyrotron (TWG) at interaction with a previously rectilinear relativistic electron beam (REB) with connected E/sub 11/ and H/sub 11/ waves of a goffered waveguide has been investigated. It is revealed that outlying electrons of a wide REB in a TWG have a combined Cherenkov-gyrotron type of interaction with waves E/sub 11/ and H/sub 11/, since the efficiency of a TWG with wide REB is much higher than in resonance gyrotrons.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat.
