For the past three years, new aluminum nitride (AlN) based ceramics have been under development to replace a hot-pressed ceramic composition made from beryllia (BeO) and silicon carbide (SiC). The BeO-SiC composite is currently the material-of-choice to provide RF loss and high thermal conductivity within the vacuum envelopes of microwave tubes. However, increasingly stringent BeO health and safety regulations and liability issues have caused qualified domestic manufacturers to cease production. Experimental evaluation of the new AlN materials in specific microwave tube configurations is being carried out. Loss buttons of the new materials are fabricated and diffusion bonded into S-band klystron cavities for cold testing. The loaded cavity Q's and frequencies are compared to those obtained with buttons made from the standard BeO-SiC composition. Materials that exhibit RF behavior similar to BeO-SiC are then selected for high-power testing at X-band to determine their suitability for use in the severe environmental conditions existing inside a high power microwave tube.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator system includes a nominally 1000 MeV, 1.4 mA average current linac consisting of a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ), drift tube linac (DTL), coupled cavity linac (CCL), a medium and high beta super conducting (SC) linac, and two buncher cavities for beam transport to an accumulator ring. The average proton beam power of the accelerator is 1.4 MW. Los Alamos is responsible for the RF systems for all sections of the linac. The SNS linac is a pulsed proton linac and the RF system must support a 1 msec beam pulse at up to a 60 Hz repetition rate. The RFQ and DTL utilize seven, 2.5 MW klystrons and operate at 402.5 MHz. The CCL,SC, and buncher cavities operate at 805 MHz. Six, 5 MW klystrons are utilized for the CCL and buncher cavities while eighty-one 550 kW klystrons are used for the SC cavities.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. For TWTs with efficiencies of more than 60%, calculated parameter results of equivalent circuit modeling of irregular slow-wave structures are represented. The described synthesis algorithms of the geometric parameters of coupling slots and cavities coincide well with the dispersion curve of a coupled resonator and corresponding equivalent circuit. Solving the corresponding nonlinear equations allows the geometric parameters to be determined.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. The powerful high-voltage switching tube developed in VEI electron beam valve (EBV) is the optimum switching device for such a modulator. Basic EBV feature is use of a principle of energy recuperation with decelerating of an electron beam at the anode which allows one to provide low internal resistance and high electronic efficiency of a tube. Due to some design features EBV has pentode voltage-current characteristic with weak dependence of a switched current from anode voltage. The anode and accelerating grid have water cooling and allow dissipation of high power that provides EBV serviceability in a long pulse mode or in a pulse-frequency mode with high average power.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. These same advantages can be extended to higher frequencies by frequency multiplying the output of the MMPM using nonlinear solid state devices and quasi-optical power combining. The resulting high power millimeter wave sources offer dramatic savings in size, weight and cost as compared to conventional coupled-cavity TWT sources. A quasi-optical frequency multiplier grid array consists of thousands of varactor devices and antennas on a single wafer. This approach is extremely attractive because of its low fabrication cost, small-size realization and graceful degradation qualities. The goal of this research is a high power source using an MMPM to drive frequency multiplier grid arrays. This hybrid technology source will provide Watt-level CW output power up to 200 GHz.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. In an effort to improve user-friendliness and simulation time, a model was developed to compute the cold-test parameters using the electromagnetic field simulation software package CST MICROWAVE STUDIO (MWS). Cold-test parameters were calculated for several slow-wave circuits including a ferruled coupled-cavity, a folded waveguide, and a novel finned-ladder circuit using both MWS and MAFIA. Comparisons indicate that MWS provides more accurate cold-test data with significantly reduced simulation times.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat.
