Yet, research is underdeveloped exploring the organizational processes guiding philanthropic granting networks at the state level. Using grant data from the most active foundations in Michigan, we employed separable temporal exponential random graph modeling to investigate how financial relationships between foundations and grantees change over time. Findings demonstrated that ties are greatly influenced by how many grant contracts an organization has, with many more likely to create and maintain relationships if they had many previous ones. Moreover, we found differences in the ways national and place-based funders operated along with growing field-level support for intermediaries.","PeriodicalId":343186,"journal":{"name":"Philanthropy & Education","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124456383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the studies on this topic are limited in their scope. The goal of this paper is to expand our knowledge and present evidence from a research study that sheds light on the main themes, difficulties, and dilemmas associated with the process of intergenerational transmission of philanthropic values and behaviors. Before describing the findings of our research which is based on interviews with offspring of philanthropic families, we will present a review of past studies and the current state of knowledge. These studies are important and serve as the basis to the conceptual framework of the current research and to the formulation of the questions explored here.","PeriodicalId":343186,"journal":{"name":"Philanthropy & Education","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115424363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through a longitudinal analysis of over 30 modern school buildings between 1911 and 2021, it chronicles homeland educational philanthropy over the past century. It establishes that the development of diaspora-initiated educational philanthropy in their ancestral home reflects social and political changes in China and in the residential orientation of the Zhongshan diaspora in Australia. In the transforming landscape of educational philanthropy, the transition from sojourner to settler and homecoming descendant over the past century has resulted in three discrete and successive outcomes: first, creating a new future; second, improving educational prospects; and finally, leaving behind a legacy. As a result of these changes, the article provides a reference point for future research on diaspora educational philanthropy directed at southern China and beyond.","PeriodicalId":343186,"journal":{"name":"Philanthropy & Education","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129937759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We address gaps in the literatures on higher education philanthropy and university trustees through an exploratory comparative case study of donations made by trustees and trustee-affiliated organizations. Drawing on microfoundations theory from neoinstitutionalism, we argue and show that trustees and trustee-affiliated organizations, via their philanthropic behaviors, shape the universities they steward in a myriad of ways. Within our case study, we analyzed donation exchanges across four elite research universities to develop three models of trustee philanthropy (facilitators, supporters and patrons) and two models of trustee-affiliated organizational philanthropy (sponsors and advocates). Differences across institutions highlight the variation across trustees, trustee-affiliated organizations, and universities in how they engage each other in philanthropic relationships. Drawing on these differences, we generate suggestions for practice and future research.","PeriodicalId":343186,"journal":{"name":"Philanthropy & Education","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115434492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This case study focuses on a unique model in philanthropy in education: the Open Society Foundations' Pre-Academic Summer Program or \"OSF Summer School.\" To prepare civil society leaders and activists for graduate level study, this month-long intensive program aims to mirror the academic environment and expectations of the grantees' host universities. Through this case study, findings show that the OSF Summer School teaches students academic skills and provides valuable lessons in interpreting academic culture. By funding and administering this initiative, OSF extends its commitment to educational access by providing programming designed for non-traditional profiles. This case study aims to inform other global foundations and higher education institutions working to prepare scholarship grantees, including individuals from marginalized communities, for international graduate education.","PeriodicalId":343186,"journal":{"name":"Philanthropy & Education","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132937019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Findings suggest the communication habits and philanthropic tendencies of public flagships support the notion of academic capitalism (Bok, 2003; Slaughter & Rhoades, 2004) primarily through the practice of opportunistic disclosure (Saorin, Osma, & Jones, 2012) regarding the headline, body text, and publication timing of the press release. However, fundraising was not always such a highly professionalized process. Higher education administration engaged in fundraising were cognizant of their efforts as they strove to build a professional field, which sought as its mission the advancement of higher education. Through their associations they developed norms, practices, and defined the standards of their field. Today, institutional advancement in higher education is an established enterprise, often organized under a mission to raise funds for the university from private sources. Through a textual analysis of Council for Advancement and Support of Education's (CASE) monthly periodicals, Currents, the American College Public Relations Association's (ACPRA) monthly periodicals, Pride, and the Greenbrier Report, this paper examines how professional associations actively and intentionally defined the purpose, practices, and standards that created the field of institutional advancement in the United States.","PeriodicalId":343186,"journal":{"name":"Philanthropy & Education","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134367961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
