Neural machine translation provides a simple modeling mechanism that is easy to use in practice and science. Thus, it does not require concepts such as word ranking, a key component of the statistical machine translation. While this simplicity may be seen as an advantage, on the other hand, the lack of careful spelling is to lose control of the translation. Even tough, the neural machine translation is more flexible in terms of translations that don’t exactly match the training data. This provides more opportunities for such models, but exempts translation from pre-determined restrictions. Failure to connect specific words can make it difficult to connect the target words you create to the original word. The widespread use of neural machine translation system has the advantage of allowing users to translate certain terms and translate uneducated data to a certain extent. In some cases, however, the structure and the grammar boundary of a sentence is often distorted. The paper is intended to address issues such as the control of neural machine translation, more accurate translation of unidentified data, the accuracy of sentence structure and grammar boundaries. To solve this problem, modern translation theory led to the hybrid model of machine translation. Our model is expansion of this hybrid model with a sentence and a grammar boundary. We named this model as hierarchical triple model (HTM).","PeriodicalId":341726,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124295664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several trends in foreign language vocabulary research and pedagogy have emerged during the 21st century. Perhaps the most significant is the technological revolution and the ever-increasing availability of English-language materials on the Internet. Thus, the present study examines the effectiveness of watching video clips with English subtitles in online classrooms to improve L2 students’ vocabulary learning and short- and long-term retention. The study consisted of a one-group, pretest-posttest quasi-experiment in which participants were taught two sets of L2 vocabulary using two methods: the presentation of subtitled clips from animated movies and first language (L1) translation and text-based activities. The participants consisted of 35 female students. The data collection was stratified into four steps: two pretests administered for both vocabulary sets before the interventions, short follow-up tests after both interventions, semi-structured interviews, and two posttests for both vocabulary sets administered at the end of the module. The data was subjected to statistical and thematic analysis. The results indicated that watching movie clips with subtitles had an effective learning result and a positive impact on students’ motivation to learn L2 vocabulary. The integration of multimedia tools and applications through the presentation of video clips with English subtitles had a powerful effect on vocabulary recognition, comprehension and retention. Participants achieved higher scores on the vocabulary posttests from watching movie clips with English subtitles than from learning vocabulary through a traditional teaching method. Therefore, the current study should serve as a foundation for future studies to validate and reference its results.","PeriodicalId":341726,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126807127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study evidently reveals that such poems substantially contribute to the preservation of major features of Chechen cultural identity. The researchers collect and analyze data using descriptive qualitative research methods. The data in question were gathered through observation, participation, and field notes; in addition, a gatekeeper (friend-to-friend contact) facilitates the entrance to this isolated ethnic society over the course of a year. This study is mainly dedicated to examining how this can be attained with relevance to the seven types of meanings presented by Leech (1981). Therefore, it aims to illustrate how these seven types of meanings exist and operate in three selected Chechen poems; mainly, Death or Freedom, Lonely Night, and Little Soldier, by exploring the ethical and cultural background and dissecting the themes found in these poems. Furthermore, this study draws upon the integrated framework which is based on Leech’s (1981) seven forms of meaning: Denotative, Connotative, Collocative, Affective, Stylistic, Thematic, and Reflective meaning. The study clearly exhibits that Chechen poems typically and primarily comprise a major range of topics such as war, country, romance, migration, masculinity, and bravery, as well as essential features of family and household matters that help to preserve Chechen culture in all aspects of everyday life, including food, home, neighborhoods, festivities, rituals, clothing, and music.","PeriodicalId":341726,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131600991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Texts produced by cultural and pedagogic institutions, such as museums, depend on several discursive choices to construct interpersonal meanings communicated through the interaction between the institution, and what it stands for, and the interactant visitors. Museum-texts communicate to/with visitors meanings pertaining to social relationships construed by both the museum and its audience and communicate the mutual relationships between them in relation to role, status, social distance, and feelings of solidarity and affiliation. Meanwhile, children museums have become a widespread phenomenon that promote edifying missions communicated to children through entertaining, interacting, and learning. This study recognises how one exhibition, named ‘I am Change’ in the Children’s Museum in Amman, relies on verbal interpersonal communication to align its young visitors into shared dispositions and perspectives towards environmental concerns related to the importance of conserving electric energy and water resources in Jordan.","PeriodicalId":341726,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114375313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They need to be evaluated periodically, as the needs of learners change according to time, context, and approaches to identify their strengths and weakness. The aim of this research is to evaluate High School English textbooks at schools in Afghanistan. The textbooks include ELT books: ‘English for Afghanistan: for grades 10-12’ designed by the Ministry of Education of Afghanistan. For this purpose, the researcher used McDonough Shaw’s (2003) model. Both the external and the internal evaluation criteria are applied to the textbooks. The findings indicate that the textbooks are designed for local purposes, which reflect Afghan religious and cultural values. The study also indicated that the textbooks are based on communicative language teaching which includes different situations for teaching the topics. However, the textbooks also had some drawbacks. The listening skill, which is the main component of the CLT approach, is completely neglected; the grammar activities are brought in the deductive approach, and the textbooks are gender-biased. Overall, the textbooks are up to date and meet the learners’ needs and wants, and can achieve the objectives made for each unit. However, the findings of the research can be more useful for teachers, syllabus designers, materials developers, methodology experts, and test designers in revising the textbooks.","PeriodicalId":341726,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114633195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study utilized a pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design. The study participants included 70 Omani students and 2 English language teachers. Convenience sampling technique was employed to sample the participants who were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group embraced 35 students who studied English at the General Foundation Program of higher education institution “A”. The control group encompassed 35 students who studied English at The General Foundation Program of higher education institution “B”. The control group studied the writing syllabus of institution “B”, while the experimental group studied the study module. The critical thinking pre-test was given before module delivery and the post-test was done after the intervention. ANCOVA test was employed to draw a statistical analogy between the mean scores of pre-test and post-test. The findings affirmed that there was a statistically significant mean variance between the control and experimental group’s scores in the critical thinking post-test. The module notably honed the experimental group’s critical thinking skills.","PeriodicalId":341726,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116440485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More recently, a group of speakers has been identified known as; the English New Native Speakers. These speakers are mostly monolinguals, who have a good command of the English Language. They are without or with the bit of ability to speak or comprehend the local language(s) used around them. The new native speaker is a 21st-century phenomenon because these speakers have not been in existence in Nigeria before this time. This paper establishes the emergence of the New English Native Speakers in Nigeria and calls for the addition of new native speakers of English in the taxonomy of the existing classification of the speakers of English in Nigeria. This paper, therefore, advocates for the re-classification of the English speakers in Nigeria to include these new speakers. I postulate that the new taxonomy of the speakers in Nigeria should be grouped thus: English new native speakers (speakers with little or no indigenous language), English as a second language (those who developed English as a second language, English as the first language (those who speak English as the first language and later developed an indigenous language).","PeriodicalId":341726,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature","volume":"503 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131019999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These teachers were evaluated on their technological knowledge on four subdimensions, on their pedagogical technology skills on five subcategories, and on five subdimensions related to their self-perceived ability to integrate TALL into English-language classrooms. The triangulated data were recursively collected in three consecutive phases. Self-efficacy was assessed using data obtained from a 48-item TALL survey and from classroom observations and interviews. Participants completed questionnaires on their self-perceived technological self-efficacy, 13 of whom were observed while teaching and subsequently participated in one-on-one interviews. The data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics of means and standard deviations and inferential statistics through one-way repeated-measures analysis of variances (RM ANOVA), along with some statistical tests and Stepwise regression. The data from the observed lessons were subjected to scrupulous and meticulous analysis, and the data from the interviews were recorded, transcribed, coded, and categorized. The findings culled from the survey, lesson observations, and interviews all revealed that Saudi EFL teachers have low self-efficacy in terms of language-learning technological knowledge, language-learning pedagogical technology skills, and ability to effectively integrate technology into EFL instruction. The implications emerging from this study center on the need to develop EFL teachers’ self-efficacy with technology to ensure that language-related digital tools in EFL instruction are used in the most effective pedagogical manner and to their full potential.","PeriodicalId":341726,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121116712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also examines the potential effects of two social variables, namely gender and education, as well as whether language choice relates to topic. The study adopts Myers-Scotton’s (1993) Markedness Model and Malik’s (1994) Model to analyze the data. The findings revealed that each code choice served different functions such as avoiding a lack of facility, addressing a different audience or showing users’ religious or cultural identity. Gender of twitter users showed significant effects on language choice, i.e., females preferred posting tweets completely in their native language whereas males preferred posting codeswitched tweets. Educational level, also, revealed some effects on language choice. Namely, tweets in the native language were posted more frequently by participants with below college education, while the combination of the bilingual’s two languages was utilized more often by those with high education. As for codeswitched tweets, participants with college education showed the highest preference for this code choice. Furthermore, Twitter users switched codes based on topic, e.g., Arabic-written tweets were frequently associated with religion-related hashtags whereas English-written tweets were associated with education-related topics. Social-related topics accounted for the highest number of codeswitched tweets. Overall, this study lends evidence to the view that online communication influences the choice of the language used.","PeriodicalId":341726,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126961338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

No studies have investigated the effect of systematic teaching of metacognitive reading strategies on students’ critical thinking skills. The present quasi-experimental study examined the effect of explicit metacognitive strategy instruction and critical thinking skills of ESL international freshman university students. Data were collected from two homogeneous 25-member groups of experimental and control learners randomly assigned to these groups. The experimental group and control group underwent 14 sessions of training. The results related to critical thinking tests revealed the mean scores of students in the metacognitive group were significantly higher than the mean score of the students in the conventional reading group (F= 1.3,82.3) = 215.973. p 0.001). Another interesting finding is that teaching metacognitive reading strategies significantly improved students’ induction (14.72) and credibility (14.30) skills.
