In accordance with the proposed architecture the base station received uplink signal is first equalized before decision and is also used to obtain an estimate of the transmission channel. This estimate is subsequently used to precompensate the downlink signal before transmission. The paper illustrates the architecture of the proposed system and its functional behavior. Performance improvement due to equalization, channel estimation and precompensation under severe multipath conditions is shown through computer simulation.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. The proposed scheme, which consists of automatic frequency control (AFC) and symbol timing detection, enables us to shorten the preamble length to 1/4 that of a conventional one. To meet growth requirements, it is often required to adopt reuse schemes with smaller reuse distances, and this in turn results in modification of the existing frequency plan. The proposed frequency transition scheme allows for gradual expansion, smooth transition and also unobtrusive co-existence offering minimal disturbance to the existing network. The plan also allows fractional reduction in cluster size and has the flexibility to adapt to varying traffic growth requirements.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. In this paper, the application of IFDMA to mobile radio transmission is considered. Especially, the frequency-diversity achievable with IFDMA taking into account the influence of pulse shaping is investigated. As a result, maximum diversity can be achieved with a set of IFDMA parameters which enables maximum-likelihood detection at the receiver. Therefore, maximum-likelihood detection is proposed for IFDMA and investigated using Monte-Carlo simulations. In comparison with multicarrier code-division multiple-access, IFDMA shows an even better performance whereas having additional advantages, such as avoiding large crest factors.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. This work presents an analysis of the effects that microcell coverage area and site location have on the net system capacity. The proposed methodology is flexible to cope with different propagation scenarios and desensitization levels at the microcell site. A study for forward and reverse links has been conducted; analysis of BER dependence on microcell area and location is also presented. The maximum capacity achievable by the mixed micro/macro cellular system is obtained, numerical results are presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. In particular, multimedia data is represented in terms of its inherent correlation, and the transmission performance is characterized by transmission reliability and efficiency. Consequently, a joint source and channel coding scheme is devised in order to accomplish tradeoffs between transmission efficiency and reliability. Moreover, diversity reception is studied in terms of improved transmission reliability and reduced error protection. Numerical examples with both fixed and variable length coding algorithms are given to demonstrate that the proposed system performs very well under various operation conditions.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. The enormous capacity of an MEA system can potentially be reduced by fading correlation. To model the narrowband Rayleigh-fading multipath environment, we propose an abstract model. Using this model, the fading statistics can be determined from the geometrical parameters of the MEA and the multipath environment. This, model allows us to directly observe how the choice of antenna geometry affects capacity. We show that the MEA capacity can be expressed as the sum of the capacities of several subchannels, whose gains are affected by the fading correlation. As the fading correlation becomes higher, the disparity between the gains of these subchannels becomes larger and as a result some of the subchannels do not convey information at any significant rate.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98.
