At the same time, the popularity of group-oriented computing has grown tremendously. However, little has been accomplished to-date in bringing together the technologies for group-oriented communication and mobile networking. In particular, most modern wireless/mobile and ad hoc networks do not provide support for multicast communication. A major challenge lies in adapting multicast communication to environments where mobility is unlimited and outages/failures are frequent. This paper motivates the need for new multicast routing protocols aimed specifically at fully-mobile (ad hoc) networks. Our premise is that, due to their inherent broadcast capability, wireless networks are well-suited for multicast communication. Unlike the evolution of routing in wired networks, we believe that-in ad hoc networks-it is more effective to treat multicast routing as a separate problem. The paper also identifies outstanding research issues pertaining to multicast routing in mobile and ad hoc networks, and discusses one possible approach to multicast routing and packet forwarding in ad hoc networks.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. The algorithm was designed with the goal of minimising the interference between different CTS-units and between the CTS and the overlay GSM network, taking into account standard GSM interleaving and coding procedures. It is part of the GSM-CTS implementation assumption for standardisation at the ETSI. The proposed algorithm is described and simulation results are shown to prove its optimal characteristics.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. We assess the importance of including depolarization losses when considering propagation between vertically polarized antennas. These losses are incurred as the vertically polarized electric field is coupled into the horizontally polarized field as a result of scattering and reflection from walls. Also examined was the predicted strength of cross-polarization when the field is launched by a vertically polarized antenna and received by a horizontally polarized antenna. Finally we have looked at how do the predicted propagation losses compare for the case of using horizontally polarized antennas at both the receiver and the transmitter as opposed to using vertically polarized antennas at both ends. The results compare favorably to measurements reported in the literature.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. IEEE 1998 International Conference on Universal Personal Communications. This paper discusses a number of important aspects of introducing EDGE in an existing GSM system, such as the modifications needed in the GSM architecture and equipment, and the impact on radio network planning. Radio network simulations have been performed with a mix of GSM/GPRS users and enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) users, and the results indicate that EDGE can share the same spectrum as GSM/GPRS with good quality for both types of users. The quality is further improved by use of quality based power control.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. IEEE 1998 International Conference on Universal Personal Communications. After classifying the channel borrowing schemes as intra-cell borrowing (intra-CBS) and inter-cell borrowing (inter-CBS), the tradeoff between the received signal quality and the channel locking in sectors is studied for both schemes. It is shown that intra-CBS with 2 sector-locking and inter-CBS with no locking provides comparable SIR performance for the downlink. For the uplink, the worst case SIR using inter-CBS is still found to be 15 dB with no locking requirement. Therefore, the inter-cell borrowing scheme is expected to increase the system capacity at the expense of little quality degradation.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. We focus on two key aspects, namely, handoff management and conference bridging. The former encompasses the capabilities needed to provide transparency for active sessions to the dynamic movement of mobile end-users across switch domains whereas the latter refers to the capabilities and strategies for establishing multipoint-to-multipoint video sessions. We identify a few schemes for handoff rerouting tailored to different degrees of mobility, which can be implemented as part of a mobility management functional layer. We also propose a set of alternatives for providing the video multicast function in an efficient manner, which can be implemented as a session control layer. A performance evaluation of the proposed methodologies, based on a simulation model, is reported along with the key results.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. This paper proposed a CDMA-slotted ALOHA system, in which all transmitters used the same PN sequence but with different chip phases and packets can be captured and received because of the autocorrelation property of the PN sequence. Then its channel throughput is analyzed. Analysis and simulation results show that the maximum channel throughput of this system is much greater than pure S-ALOHA system and multiservices can be supported with guaranteed QoS.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. The embedded microcell shares the same frequency and has full connectivity with the overlaying macrocell. The capacity of microcell and macrocell are derived and simulated at various traffic distributions. The microcell capacity is 1.03 to 1.12 times that of a regular cell. The capacity of the combined microcell and macrocell is 2.00 to 2.11 times that of a regular cell. The microcell and macrocell performance are also analyzed in terms of RF reliability, soft hand-off factors, interference and power levels. The macrocell RF reliability will degrade more seriously than that of the microcell. The radio hand-off factors of the microcell are about 11% higher than that of the macrocell. The average required forward traffic channel power of the microcell is about 10% less than that of the macrocell. The results show that embedding the microcell in an existing CDMA network could be a very efficient way to improve hot-spot capacity and dead-spot coverage.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98. We show how one may determine customer-orientated grade-of-service parameters such as new call blocking, hand-off call blocking and forced termination probability under a two moment representation of traffic offered to each cell. We present extensive results comparing the proposed two moment analysis with classical single moment analysis and simulation results. For variety, we have employed four different mobility models in our simulator. We show that our proposed model outperforms the existing analytical method when compared to simulation results employing all four mobility models.","PeriodicalId":341069,"journal":{"name":"ICUPC '98.
