It reduces scrap rates, rework costs and manufacturing costs due to excessive variability in processes. However, its application by industrial engineers in the UK is limited, in part due to the inadequate statistical education of engineers. This paper presents a simple experiment which can be used in the classroom to teach engineers the basics of the technique and illustrates simple analytical and graphical tools which promote rapid understanding of the results of the experiment.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"183 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134331938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, all building projects will need to fulfill a minimum buildable score before their development and building plans can be approved. Achievement of higher buildable scores can be attained by greater use of prefabrication technology. The Building and Construction Authority is attempting to promote the just‐in‐time (JIT) philosophy for managing precast concrete components. Components are expected to be manufactured and delivered just in time for installation and erection on site. By means of a survey, this paper examines the readiness of precasters in Singapore to adopt the JIT philosophy in producing and delivering precast concrete components to contractor‐clients.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124217664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study suggests that effective leadership style may not be dependent on whether an organization is for‐profit or not‐for‐profit. The findings of this study indicate that even in a not‐for‐profit context, effective leadership is defined not only by task and people orientations but also the interaction between them. Therefore, in developing the psychological profile of effective not‐for‐profit leaders, as is the case in the for‐profit sector, management researchers should explore both their task and people orientations.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127247062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Similarly, military privatization/outsourcing is too important to be left to civilian accountants. The concept brings fear to labor unions and bureaucrats, and is a source of considerable risk. This paper examines potential benefits and potential problems associated with such privatization and outsourcing, alongside the cultural and psychological barriers to its acceptance.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"369 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133210491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is an alternative to the traditional inefficient and unreliable one‐factor‐at‐a‐time approach to experimentation, where an experimenter generally varies one factor or process parameter at a time keeping all other factors at a constant level. This paper presents a step‐by‐step approach to the optimisation of a production process (of retaining a metal ring in a plastic body by a hot forming method) through the utilisation of Taguchi methods of experimental design. The experiment enabled the behaviour of the system to be understood by the engineering team in a short period of time and resulted in significantly improved performance (with the opportunity to design further experiments for possible greater improvements).","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132215223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Manufacturers have adopted strategies which attach priority to external growth and strengthen the activities in which they are in a dominant position, seeking to achieve critical size. Speed, quality, service, flexibility and global focus are identified as the essential elements for successful manufacturing for the next decade. Manufacturers are measured by their ability to respond quickly to sudden, often unpredictable changes in customer needs and wants. This paper describes a model for the implementation of competitive manufacturing strategies, consistent with a company’s overall business strategy. The model aims to assist manufacturers in enhancing productivity, improving delivery times, reducing manufacturing costs and upgrading product quality by means of a systematic and practical approach. Results from use of the model indicate that manufacturers can significantly differentiate themselves from their competitors; and that quality, cost and delivery can all be improved. A case study is presented to illustrate the use of the model in developing a manufacturing strategy, and the identification and implementation of major strategic projects.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116291921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
