The rats of both sexes (n=24), average weight of 185g were randomly assigned into two treatments (n=16) and control (n=8) groups. The rats in the treatment groups received 0.04mg/kg and 0.08mg/kg of MSG thoroughly mixed with their feeds for fourteen days, while the control rats received equal amounts of feeds without MSG added. The rats were fed with growers' mash purchased from Edo Feeds and Flour Mill Ltd, Ewu, Edo State and were given water liberally. The rats were taken from their home cages and placed randomly into one of the four corners of the open field, facing the centre and allowed to explore the apparatus for 5minutes as the various behavioral scores were measured. The findings indicates that there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in the frequencies of line crossing, walling, grooming and hinding between the two treatments and control groups.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130536414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: The study comprised 39 healthy postnatal mothers, who delivered their babies at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka. Reversed phase HPLC and spectrophotometric methods were employed to determine the serum concentrations of vitamin E, A, and C. SPSS software package was used to analyze the data. Results: The postnatal serum concentrations of vitamin E, C, and A were 15.305.04μmol/L, 18.4110.76μmol/L and 0.870.35μmol/L respectively. Compared to the prenatal vitamins levels, a significant decrease in vitamin E concentration (15.305.04 vs 23.548.5μmol/L, p=0.000), and increase in vitamin C and A (18.4110.76 vs 14.08.2μmol/L, p=0.000; 0.870.35 vs 0.850.24μmol/L, p=0.015) were obtained in the postnatal mothers. It was noted that the majority of postnatal mothers had vitamin E and A value in the middle and high range. It was in lower range for vitamin C. Conclusion: Compared to the prenatal level, serum vitamin C and A levels were observed increase, while vitamin E level was lowered significantly (p<0.05) in postnatal mother. Report on postnatal antioxidant vitamins is scanty. However, this is by far the second report on the postnatal maternal serum antioxidant vitamins.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126883312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the study syrups were prepared using stevioside as sweetener in 0.5 and 1% w/v concentration, salbutamol sulphate and Bromhexine hydrochloride in combination as model drugs. The usage of stevioside can offer many advantages to patients suffering from Diabetes, Phenylketonurea and calorie conscious, ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics. If the sweetener is soluble in the solvent, concentration of stevioside required is less i.e. up to 0.5% w/v. Formulated liquid oral dosage forms were stable at room temperature and showed good sweetness and palatability and were evaluated for drug content, viscosity, pH, and compatibility studies. Evaluation of the sweeteners and palatability was done using a panel of trained volunteers and it was observed that concentration of 0.5% w/v of Stevioside showed good sweetness and palatability.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130828044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the group serves as control group while the other 3 groups received a sub-lethal dose of sesame extract (3000mg/kg body weight) once in a day for 8 weeks. One of the treatment groups (T3) also received 2.5mg/kg of Vitamin C for 8 weeks. At the end of the 8 weeks, animals in Control, T1 and T3 were sacrificed while T2 was withdrawn from extract administration for 4 weeks to test for the effect of withdrawal. Sperm counts, Morphology and Motility were quantified and organ and general body weights were measured in a weighing balance. Results of the experiment revealed an increment in the sperm count and sperm percentage motility but a decreased percentage morphology distortion. There were dose-dependent increments in body and organ weight gains, withdrawal notwithstanding. This experiment thus revealed that ethanolic extract of sesame seed possesses potent profertility properties which may be beneficial to those who consume it.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124158977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This issue is clouded by the wide methods used to measure body fatness and activity levels. Objective: To review published prospective observational studies evaluating the associations between body fatness and physical activity, with emphasis on methodological issues. Data sources: Published English-Language studies were located from PubMed and bibliographies of primary studies. Data extraction: Sample size, population studied, measures of activity and body fatness, statistic approach, and main findings were extracted, summarized, and key methodological issues highlighted. Results: In total, 58 studies were identified and reviewed. Results were mixed, with most studies showing an inverse association of physical activity with fatness. The effects identified were generally of small magnitude. Imprecise measurement of activity and small sample sizes likely weakens the observed relationships. On balance, combinations of methods of activity measures tend to produce a better result. Consistently documented high effect sizes were found for all studies that used 18-Oxygen for assessing body fatness and doubly labelled water for activity measure. Conclusions: This review suggests that there is small to moderate inverse relationship body fatness and activity. The association is in favour of male and younger subjects. It is important to note, however, that there is a need more research on uniform ways of activity and fatness measures.","PeriodicalId":339404,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128030705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
