Thus, in the field of health, the medical and health protection of the elderly, should have a double requirement which consists on the one hand, to prevent the loss of autonomy and on the other hand, in case of illness, even minor, to early diagnosis and appropriate treatment before cascading lesions occur. The main principles or guidelines for a geriatric strategy in Senegal in particular and in Africa in general could be articulated around a policy of home care; the integration of geronto-geriatrics with primary health care, specialized consultation, psychomotor rehabilitation, traditional medico-surgical hospitalization and housing for the elderly. However, any medical and health action in favor of the elderly must first give priority to prevention without neglecting the curative aspect. Thus, this action to be effective should focus on maintaining the home and the family of the elderly, through an urbanization policy that should make possible the cohabitation of ages. On the other hand, the creation of services exclusively reserved for the elderly should for the moment be excluded, since it is culturally inappropriate and economically difficult to implement. It should be emphasized that this medical and health protection for the elderly will require the provision of additional financial resources. However, the organization that will have to cover the cost of this care has yet to be defined.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"235 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133010584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of the 2014 Ebola virus disease outbreak on antenatal care visits, institutional deliveries and vaccine coverage among children aged 0 to 11 months in the health district of Beyla in Guinea. This was an ecological study based on aggregated data from the public health facilities of the district health of Beyla, that covered three distinct periods related to the Ebola virus disease outbreak: pre-Ebola (February 1st 2013 to January 31st 2014), intra-Ebola (February 1st 2014 to January 31st 2015) and post-Ebola (February 1st 2015 to December 31st 2015). Antenatal care visits, institutional deliveries and vaccination coverage of children aged 0 to 11 months significantly decreased during the intra and post-Ebola periods. The average of antenatal care visits (third visit or more) declined from 123% (pre-Ebola period) to 85% and 65% during the intra and post-Ebola periods respectively. Institutional deliveries declined from 40% to 35% then to 30% respectively (p < 0.001). Also, the average of vaccination coverage declined from 86% to 65% then to 56% respectively for BCG (p < 0.001), from 90% to 50% then to 52% for Pentavalent-3 (p < 0.001), and from 84% to 33% then to 48% for Oral Polio vaccine (third dose) (p < 0.001). Ebola virus disease outbreak led to persistent decrease in antenatal care visits, institutional deliveries and vaccination coverages among children aged 0 to 11 months in the district health of Beyla intra and post Ebola outbreak. Further studies, using qualitative research methods, that explore perceptions of communities and women will better guide health response during outbreak, strengthen health systems and prevent future Ebola outbreak in Guinea.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"216 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124258491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In spite of the insufficient data to justify herbal use during pregnancy, exposure to herbal products in unspecified quantities among pregnant women is of great concern. This study assessed the determinants of herbal use (Kaligu-tim), a known local oxytocin and its impact on the maternal birth outcomes in a rural district in Ghana. Descriptive cross-sectional study design was used. It consisted of 339 women attending postnatal care and child welfare clinics across the district. Data collection was done using a structured questionnaire. The selection of respondents was done using a systematic sampling technique. The data were coded and entered into SPSS version 22.0 for analysis. From the study, 64.9% and 45.4% of respondents had used local oxytocin in their previous and current pregnancies respectively; 5.5% did so during the first trimester, 26.8% in the second trimester and 67.7% in the third trimester. The study found a significant relationship between the use of herbal medicine and health service-related challenges, maternal age, the gestational term at delivery, parity of the respondents and mothers’ ethnicity. Previous and current use of Kaligu-tim reduced birth weight by 26g and 34.3g respectively, though these were not statistically significant. However, the previous history of Kaligu-tim was significantly associated with perinatal asphyxia, postpartum haemorrhage, obstructed labour and foetal distress in their subsequent deliveries. It can be concluded that the use of this Kaligu-tim possesses a greater long term health challenge for mothers and their babies.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115093528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adherence to hand hygiene among healthcare workers, however, is low across the world. The aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge of hand hygiene among healthcare workers and identify reasons for poor hand hygiene practice in our hospital. A 19-point questionnaire was administered to available health workers in February 2018 to assess availability of hand hygiene materials, frequency of performing hand hygiene, satisfaction with hand hygiene materials, and knowledge of infection transmission dynamics, efficacy and proper use of hand hygiene methods. Eighty-five healthcare workers participated in this study. Mean knowledge score of participants was 37.87 ± 13.45. Most participants reported performing hand hygiene up to 90% of the time and there were high rates of dissatisfaction among participants with hand hygiene products and their availability. This study shows that there is poor knowledge of some aspects of hand hygiene among healthcare workers in our hospital and there is general dissatisfaction with current hand hygiene products.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129878062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pharmaceutical companies could easily take advantage of the regulatory situation in these vulnerable countries. This research study examines ethical statements of the 25 top pharmaceutical companies conducting clinical trials in Africa regarding three questions in objectives according to their policies or their websites. Objectives: 1. Do pharmaceutical companies mention clinical trials in developing countries? 2. Do pharmaceutical companies mention the issue with standard of care? 3. Do pharmaceutical companies mention NDA (New Drug Application) and special prices for countries and participants? Methods: To evaluate the statements found in their policies or websites, a rating scale with a maximum of 10 points was developed. The statements of the pharmaceutical companies have been rated by at least two independent researchers. High points are equal to high standards, the maximum points were 10. Results: Only 15 out of the biggest 25 pharmaceutical companies were conducting at least 10 clinical trials in developing countries in Africa during the last five years. On average, the pharmaceutical companies achieved a score of 6.93 of 10. Conclusion: On one hand, the result shows that some companies achieved high scores. On the other hand, it shows that some companies need to improve their policies and statements of commitment to serve as a role model.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128768004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Contraceptive service has been contributing for the betterment of maternal and child health by averting unwanted and unplanned pregnancies. However, the effect is not uniform across the nation and the globe. This study is conducted with the purpose of exploring the experiences of current contraceptive users and cascade to the non-users to enhance the benefits of contraceptive use for maternal and child health. The study employed an interpretive phenomenology to explore the lived experiences of current user. Focus group discussions and individual in-depth interview methods used to collect information. Data were analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis. The finding indicates that contraceptive use has created great changes both in the lives of mothers and children when compared to the non-use period. They acclaimed that they got time to care for themselves and their children by averting unplanned pregnancies. Based on the study finding it is concluded that women are able to control their body, their fertility and hence relieved from the trap of unplanned pregnancies. The experiences of the current user women can be best lesson for the non-user, hence, further improve the health status of mothers and children in rural part of the country.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130749737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Climate has been proved to have impact on tuberculosis distribution. This study aimed at assessing possible association of TB notifications with some meteorological parameters. Daily, weekly, monthly and quaterly aggregates of tuberculosis diagnosis results for consecutive tuberculosis patients tested over one year (April 2010 until March 2011) at Jamot Hospital of Yaounde were analysed (Microsoft excel and SPSS). A total of 665 tuberculosis patients were enrolled at the Jamot Hospital of Yaounde during the study period. Weekly mean humidity and temperature were related to tuberculosis cases with respectively Pearson correlation coefficients of 0.291 and -0.342 even though the relation was weak. For the relationship magnitude 8.5% and 11.7% of the variance in tuberculosis cases were explained by weekly mean humidity and temperature respectively. A Poisson regression predicted more tuberculosis cases following weekly increase of humidity, a statistically significant result with p ˂ 0.001. There was 12.1% decrease in the number of tuberculosis cases for each decrease of temperature per week. However, rainfall had no impact on tuberculosis notifications even though most cases were recorded in rainy season while seasonal index changed over time. In short, tuberculosis notifications showed to be associated to two meteorological parameters: mean ambient temperature and relative mean humidity. The highest peak was in the month of June during the rainy season. Data from this work may contribute to the National Tuberculosis Control Program to model tuberculosis variation from recorded tuberculosis notifications since years in order to find an indicator for better intervention strategies for disease control.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134027044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a palliative care course on Cameroonian preregistration nursing students’ palliative care knowledge. The study employed a longitudinal quasi-experimental pretest/posttest design. A 30 hours classroom based palliative care course, underpinned by the experiential learning theory was delivered to second and third year nursing students in a University in Cameroon. An evaluation of the impact of the course on students’ palliative care knowledge was conducted via a pretest/posttest survey. Data was analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed very poor palliative care knowledge among preregistration nursing students, with a mean pretest score of 5.72/20 (Standard deviation of 2.54; Confidence Interval: 5.11-6.34). After the palliative care course there was a statistically significantly improvement in students’ overall palliative care knowledge, with a posttest score of 11.36 (SD= 2.03, CI 10.85-11.87). Demographic factors like students’ level in the nursing course and age were seen to be associated with students’ pre-course scores (P=0.002 and 0.027 respectively), but no demographic factor was implicated in the posttest score. There is therefore a need for curriculum revision to include palliative care content in the preregistration nurse training curricula of the pilot University.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126485124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, approximately 20% of hospital admissions and 10% of hospital deaths in Nigeria have been attributed to malaria. This secondary data analysis was conducted to examine the pattern severe malaria in Plateau State in the face of declining global malaria infection. Severe malaria-specific Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDRS) records of Plateau State of Nigeria over a five-¬year period were reviewed. A total of 38,467 cases of severe malaria were reported between January 2013 and December 2017. The highest number of cases 14098 (36.65%) was reported in 2016 and the least number of cases 950 (2.47%) were reported in 2014. A total of 362 severe malaria deaths was reported within the same period with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.94%. The highest CFR 1.43% was recorded in 2015 while the least CFR 0.00% was recorded in 2014. The 0-28 days age group had the highest CFR (3.13%). The comparative monthly trend of severe malaria cases did not follow any consistent pattern during the 5 years under review. However, as of 2017, the trends of total cases per year and CFRs were on the decline. In conclusion, the overall number of cases and deaths of severe malaria is declining in Plateau State but the CFR among neonates remains high. Therefore, prevention and control efforts should be intensified in Plateau State, in order to achieve malaria elimination in the State.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126164721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
