LPG sensing evaluations of p-Cu 2 O/ITO done at 70 °C constant temperature with 100% LPG at 5 cc min −1 flow rate, showed excellent gas sensor response, recovery, and stability over time due to its moderate wetting behavior (average contact angle: ∼86°). AC impedance measurements carried out at room temperature demonstrated an ionic to electronic conduction variation from 100 Hz to 1 MHz, due to adsorption/desorption of LPG molecules (C n H 2n+2 ) and oxygen species on the nano-particles surface. Cu 2 O/ITO flat band potential was found to be higher than its’ ambient state after exposure to LPG with an increment in acceptor density. Overall, this efficient LPG sensing could be attributed to the interfacial properties of Cu 2 O thin films and ITO substrates, that provide an optimized fabrication process of nano-structured Cu 2 O thin films.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"15 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135769502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, three types of symmetrical cells with the same BCFZY cathode were fabricated over three related proton conducting electrolytes: BaZr 0.8−x Ce x Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ (x = 0.1, 0.4, and 0.7). The cathode shows similar performance over three different electrolytes in dry air but different responses to moisture introduction. The differences are hypothesized to relate to the mutual diffusion at the cathode/electrolyte interface. Spontaneous reactions in the fuel cells were studied under various conditions such as excess oxygen at the cathode and at higher temperatures without application of an external voltage and without forcing an external current. When acetaldehyde was used as a fuel, the current in the circuit and the concentration of acetic acid (product of the fuel cells) were not influenced by the experimental conditions. On the other hand, when ethanol was used as a fuel, the current in the circuit and the concentration of acetic acid were influenced by the experimental conditions. It was thus concluded that ethanol is oxidized directly to acetic acid without oxidation to acetaldehyde and then to acetic acid. The calculated Δ G for possible half reactions in direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) with CEM and AEM (anion exchange membrane) suggests that a reliable AEM should be developed for the further development of DEFCs.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136019118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Herein, two sets of highly flexible, stretchable, and sticky-type ternary SPE films based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/ poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) blend as host matrix of different compositional ratios (i.e., 25/75, 50/50, and 75/25 wt/wt%) with 30 and 50 wt% lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) as ionic dopant salt, and also one sample of polymer-in-salt (PiS) comprised the 50/50 wt/wt% polymer blend matrix and 60 wt% salt, are prepared and characterized in detail. These SPEs are predominantly amorphous, having substantial absorbance for ultraviolet-visible radiations and tunable wide range energy band gaps. The 20 Hz to 1 GHz broadband dielectric permittivity, loss angle tangent, and electrical conductivity spectra explained a variety of polarization and structural relaxation processes and the mechanism of ion transport ruled by the compositional synergy of polymer and salt in these SPEs. The highest ionic conductivity with appreciable electrochemical performance of the SPE is found for the PEO-rich blend matrix with 50 wt% of LiTFSI dopant. The characteristics of Nyquist plots show that bulk and grain boundary effects exist in BCZT ceramics. The bulk conductivity indicates an Arrhenius-type thermally activated process. A composite of surfactant 1-(2, 4-dinitrophenyl)-dodecanoylthiourea (DAN) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was employed as modified for the sensitive detection of oxoplatin (OXP), an extensively used anticancer drug. It enters into water bodies through improper handling in underdeveloped countries where drug disposal precautions are not fully respected. The designed platform (DAN/AuNPs/GCE) displays remarkable sensitivity 6.35 µA/nM and senses OXP with LOD of 14.5 pM under optimized conditions. The sensor was characterized by electrochemical techniques mainly cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and square wave voltammetry. The response of OXP was also examined in the artificial serum sample. The modified electrode was found to have extraordinary discrimination ability for the selected drug even in the presence of a 100-fold higher concentration of several interfering agents and displayed remarkable repeatability and reproducibility with RSD up to 3%. The role of the electrode modifier in enhancing the concentration of OXP near the transducer surface and consequently intensifying the oxidation signal of OXP was validated from experimental and computational studies.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135944210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The templates were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and operating parameters were optimized using a Box-Behnken experimental design. The best conditions were found for an oxalic acid electrolyte concentration of 0.6 M, an anodizing potential of 46 V, and a bath temperature of 10 °C. This process resulted in an averaged regularity ratio (r avg ) value of 2.66 which compares very favorably with previously reported values obtained from higher-purity aluminum (99.5%). Templates developed from low-purity aluminum are more suitable for high-volume industrial applications where there is a practical trade-off between cost and the quality of the geometric pores.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"192 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135944606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We employ the multi-site, multi-reaction (MSMR) framework to describe the solid phase thermodynamics as well as irreversible phenomena associated with diffusion and electrochemical reactions for a graphite negative and a spinel manganese oxide positive. The calculations are streamlined by using the reduced-order electrochemical model for a porous electrode derived by means of a perturbation analysis, which we term ROM1. For discharge rates less than 1C, where the 1C rate corresponds to the current needed to fully discharge the cell in 1 hour, ROM1 yields accurate results for traction-battery electrodes. We employ ROM1 in the cell energy balance, with the overall results allowing one to clarify the current and temperature distributions within the cell and isolate and identify the different heat sources. The governing partial differential equations are coupled and nonlinear in part due to the temperature dependence of the physicochemical properties. We show how cocurrent tab locations yield higher cell energy densities, while countercurrent tab locations yield more uniform current and temperature distributions. Sensitivity analyses underscore the flexibility of the approach.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135993884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In underwater service conditions, water temperature, salinity and velocity play a major role in the longevity of subsea applications. Interactions between the preceding factors can induce catastrophic failure to critical systems while the underlying cause is unclear. This paper proposes an approach for elucidating the corrosion process accompanying underwater applications. The service conditions of underwater application are simulated in a multidisciplinary system that records various parameters such as water temperature, reference-electrode potential, and electric current at five-minute intervals during the 21 d of the experiment. This novel, experimental, and inexpensive ICCP system was developed on an “Arduino” microcontroller and applied to an actual ASTM A193 B7 bolt tightened on an ASTM A105 flange at different torque levels. Experimental results indicate a direct relationship between the water day-night temperature profile and the cathodic protection performance. Specifically, the ICCP performance declines with increasing temperature. When the ICCP system was activated, gas bubbles are generated on the metal surface. Presumably these bubbles could induce hydrogen embrittlement cracks which were observed in scanning electron microscope images of the bolt cross-sections.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136078389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The lattice volume of the Ni–Sn–Fe-based coating was estimated to be 77.1 Å 3 , a much larger value than that (44.0 Å 3 ) of the Ni–Fe-based coating obtained in the absence of Sn 2+ . The Ni–Sn–Fe-coated electrode manufactured by cathodic polarization at a current density of −120 mA cm −2 afforded a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 276 mV in 1 M KOH. The said electrode’s Tafel slope was estimated to be 37 mV dec −1 . When electrolyzed at constant current density (+50 mA cm −2 to +800 mA cm −2 ), it exhibited a stable potential for at least 162 h. The Ni–Sn–Fe-coated electrode was also used as the anode in a two-electrode cell (80 °C; 30 wt% KOH) and electrolyzed for 3 d. Evidence indicated a low cell voltage of 1.81 V at a current density of +600 mA cm −2 , which is at an industrial level.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136255230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
