The negative impact of COVID-19 has mostly been experienced by entrepreneurs. This is because entrepreneurs in the COVID-impacted sectors such as tourism are likely to lose 50% to 80% of their turnover. As a result, businesses around the world need to come up with sustainable and innovative solutions to avoid economic disruptions due to pandemics like COVID-19. To remain sustainable, businesses redirected their production to products and services that contributed to the fight against COVID-19. Thus, businesses adopted modern work practices that are based on deliverable rather than time spent at workplaces. Globally, many companies have turned to ICTs to deliver their products and services to customers using online platforms. This chapter argues that businesses need insurances that cover financial losses due to pandemic outbreaks. Hence, universities need to take the lead in research to advise businesses on the strategies to be undertaken during a crisis like COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":335967,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Strategies and Interventions to Mitigate COVID-19 Impact on SMEs","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134167839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both the public and private universities faced different types of challenges to continue the teaching-learning process during this time. The chapter has explored these challenges and mitigation strategies based on quantitative and qualitative studies with undergraduate and graduate students of public and private universities. The study has covered both public and privately owned general and engineering universities to explore more specific issues and directives. Moreover, in-depth interviews were conducted with teachers to learn the problems they faced and subsequent strategies to cope with the challenges to minimize these challenges and educational loss. The study identified the infrastructural, technical, psychological, health, educational policy, and financial-related challenges faced by key stakeholders. The study incorporated directives to overcome these challenges and provide guidelines for policymakers at home and abroad.","PeriodicalId":335967,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Strategies and Interventions to Mitigate COVID-19 Impact on SMEs","volume":"240 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132858067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pandemic has changed paradigms, and people have reacted by trying to find solutions for problems. New challenges arise, and, more than ever, people must understand that the future depends on the way they face the present. The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the need to collectively work in accordance to our realities. Co-creation, entrepreneurship, holistic thinking, and creativity are huge contributions that can make a difference. This chapter aims to explain and share best practices of Portugal and Brazil to mitigate COVID-19 impacts. Using primary data, a presentation is made between a varied set of measures and actions carried out by the two countries, similar in language but different in cultures and realities. The results could be practical guidelines for potential implementation elsewhere. The conclusion seems to point out that solutions require involvement for all stakeholders, with innovation and critical behaviour as means to pursue the path of sustainable development.","PeriodicalId":335967,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Strategies and Interventions to Mitigate COVID-19 Impact on SMEs","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115491552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From a target population of 2,300 MSMEs, a sample of 729 companies was drawn using the sample determination formula of Parten. The 729 sampled MSMEs were randomly administered web-based questionnaires through their emails. In the end, the 169 responses received were analysed and the results presented using descriptive and inferential statistics. It was found that the lockdowns had adverse effects on production and supply turn-over, sales, profits, customer patronage of MSMEs. With regards to the government fiscal stimulus, it was found that the relief materials and cash assistance, tax relief, debt rescheduling, and support incentives were inadequate to forestall the adverse effect of COVID-19 on the business operations of MSMEs. In practical terms, the chapter confirms a strong readiness in Nigeria to sustain MSMEs in the post-COVID-19 era.","PeriodicalId":335967,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Strategies and Interventions to Mitigate COVID-19 Impact on SMEs","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132266899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter explores interventions and practices that mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on SMEs that act as accelerators towards business recovery. It also deliberates on different government interventions that are in place. The chapter highlights the importance and contribution of different interventions towards continuity of businesses as they try to stay afloat in the middle of a global pandemic. It conveys contextual insights from different entrepreneurs operating SMEs in five sectors of the economy, that is manufacturing, hospitality, education, construction, and in wholesale and retail trade.","PeriodicalId":335967,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Strategies and Interventions to Mitigate COVID-19 Impact on SMEs","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123062405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this chapter is to shed light on the socioeconomic and cultural traits of female entrepreneurship in the Kichwa (Quichua)-Puruha indigenous group and how this relates to the Sumak Kawsay (Harmonious Life) in the region of Chimborazo, one of the most impoverished provinces of Ecuador. In order to achieve this goal, a mixed methodology has been applied made up of focus groups, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and hours of direct observation. The results show that indigenous female entrepreneurs belonging to the Kichwa (Quichua)-Puruha ethnic group living in the Chimborazo region are guided by four concepts—relationship, correspondence, reciprocity, and complementarity—and on five principles related to national culture and which are related to sustainable development.","PeriodicalId":335967,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Strategies and Interventions to Mitigate COVID-19 Impact on SMEs","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115630080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Europe and the United States have followed different strategies to fight the virus. The differences between those areas in relation with the pandemic could be named shortly as for example the additional time that the United States had to prepare everything against the pandemic compared to Europe, as the American government had around three weeks in comparison to Europe to plan the strategy against the pandemic. The density of population is also an example of the differences between those areas as the United States has a lower population density compared to Europe, and this is another key fact affecting the spreading of COVID-19. The main objective of the study is to compare the different measures adopted by each region and analyze the impact they have in the economy and in small and medium businesses. Specific conclusions about the impact of the measures adopted will be extracted, and some lessons could be obtained from those conclusions.","PeriodicalId":335967,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Strategies and Interventions to Mitigate COVID-19 Impact on SMEs","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116151162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The major issue with the disease is that it spread just by coming into contact with the infected person or infected object, and therefore, it is very difficult to operate day-to-day operations, jobs, and various economic activities in a country. The most damaging impact of this pandemic is that it has disturbed various economic activities all over the world. Many people lost their jobs, many businesses shut down, and many services stopped. Now the point is how to operate these various activities in more strategic ways so that negative impacts of the same can be minimized. Every economic activity has its own parameters and system of operations, and therefore, every activity has to be dealt with in a unique way. This chapter discusses post-pandemic strategies for critical sectoral development to resume their development. The required data for the present study was collected from both primary and secondary sources.","PeriodicalId":335967,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Strategies and Interventions to Mitigate COVID-19 Impact on SMEs","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116757508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In all the countries where PA has been adopted, it includes a wide array of disruptive technologies such as global positioning system (GPS), satellite imagery, monitoring control systems (MCS) using an intelligent sensor, artificial plant growing technique (APGT), soilless cultivation system (SCS), drones/unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT), robotics, variable rate technology, GPS-based soil sampling, and telematics. Adopting the PA in commercial agriculture will improve food production, increase food exports, gross domestic products (GDPs), and strengthen the actualization of sustainable food security. Ultimately, this chapter concludes with policy suggestions for mitigating the rising trends in food insecurity, food inflation, and low agricultural productivity.","PeriodicalId":335967,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Strategies and Interventions to Mitigate COVID-19 Impact on SMEs","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131949669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A quantitative research approach using a structured questionnaire was adopted for gathering data. A simple random technique was employed to identify the respondents from the urban area of Masvingo. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were utilised for data analysis. The results showed that risk-taking and proactiveness have a significant positive impact on business growth while innovativeness had an insignificant negative effect on SMEs' business growth. The chapter recommends more effective training programmes on entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurship before providing financial assistance. Furthermore, SMEs should focus on innovation to gain high financial returns. Future research could focus on the mediating variables between entrepreneurial orientation and business growth relationships within and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.","PeriodicalId":335967,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Strategies and Interventions to Mitigate COVID-19 Impact on SMEs","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122139572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
