In medical contexts, a patient sometimes suffers from several diseases and has complicated symptoms, which makes a differential diagnosis very difficult. For example, in the domain of headache, a patient suffering from migraine, (a vascular disease), may also suffer from muscle contraction headache (a muscular disease). In this case, symptoms specific to vascular diseases will be observed with those specific to muscular ones. Since one of the essential processes in diagnosis of headache is discrimination between vascular and muscular diseases, simple rules will not work to rule out one of the two groups. However, medical experts do not have this problem and conclude both diseases. In this paper, three models for reasoning about complications are introduced and modeled by using characterization and rough set model. This clear representation, suggests that this model should be used by medical experts implicitly.","PeriodicalId":335957,"journal":{"name":"18th International Conference of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society - NAFIPS (Cat. Features are computed in a window and mapped to the central pixel of this window. We implemented a variation of the testing phase of a fuzzy ARTMAP that exhibited a performance that was superior to the standard fuzzy ARTMAP and the 1-nearest neighbor (1-NN) method in the presence of noise. Training was performed using patterns that were extracted from 20 different textures. The classification performance is also studied with respect to a testing set. Segmentation results are also presented to illustrate that the classification algorithm and its specified parameters are adequate so that more than one texture can be identified in the same image.","PeriodicalId":335957,"journal":{"name":"18th International Conference of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society - NAFIPS (Cat. New modules are generated when performance of existing modules is inadequate for some training data, and the applicability of a module to each input vector is determined based on the fuzzy membership of that vector in the possibly asymmetric clusters represented by the reference vectors associated with different modules. The main idea is that for neural networks that rely on a reference vector (for vector quantization, clustering, and similar tasks), the use of fuzzy membership criterion based on the distribution of data (inside different Voronoi cells) may be more appropriate than the traditional approach using a Euclidean metric to determine to which cell each data point belongs.","PeriodicalId":335957,"journal":{"name":"18th International Conference of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society - NAFIPS (Cat. This is somewhat surprising in view of the close relationship between control and estimation. The paper discusses and demonstrates the application of fuzzy filtering to motor winding current estimation in permanent magnet synchronous motors. It is shown via simulation results that fuzzy techniques provide an attractive alternative to current estimation using analytic techniques. It is further shown how the fuzzy membership functions can be optimized using gradient descent.","PeriodicalId":335957,"journal":{"name":"18th International Conference of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society - NAFIPS (Cat. Previous work on modelling emotions and its problems are reviewed. A model for emotions is proposed using multidimensional logic, which handles the degree of contradiction that emotions might have. The model is oriented to simulate emotions in artificial societies. The proposed solution is also generalized for actions which might overcome contradiction (conflicting goals in agents, for example).","PeriodicalId":335957,"journal":{"name":"18th International Conference of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society - NAFIPS (Cat. In this paper, we define the notion of a \"\"user session\" as being a temporally compact sequence of Web accesses by a user. We also define a dissimilarity measure between two Web sessions that captures the organization of a Web site. To cluster the user sessions based on the pairwise dissimilarities, we introduce the relational fuzzy c-maximal density estimator (RFC-MDE) algorithm. RFC-MDE is robust and can deal with outliers that are typical in this application. We show real examples of the use of RFC-MDE for extraction of user profiles from log data, and and compare its performance to the standard non-Euclidean fuzzy c-means.","PeriodicalId":335957,"journal":{"name":"18th International Conference of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society - NAFIPS (Cat. In the past two decades, and specially in the mid 80s to mid 90s, fuzzy logic control, has been successfully deployed in a broad spectrum of application areas ranging from automatic train operation to flight systems. None the less there remains a great deal of scepticism within the control community as to what the real merits of this paradigm are. We focus on the positive aspect of fuzzy logic control, as well as some significant controversial issues that surround this paradigm. In particular, we contend that while the semantic transparency offered by fuzzy logic enables control engineers to efficiently develop control strategies in application areas marked by low order dynamics with weak nonlinearities, the broader impact of fuzzy logic should be in hierarchically structured systems, perhaps in combination with conventional control techniques. We offer examples of application of fuzzy logic in hierarchical setting and discuss a number of theoretical issues that arise in these settings.","PeriodicalId":335957,"journal":{"name":"18th International Conference of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society - NAFIPS (Cat. Computing with descriptive and veristic words 用描述词和真实词进行计算

{"title":"Computing with descriptive and veristic words","authors":"I. Turksen","doi":"10.1109/NAFIPS.1999.781643","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/NAFIPS.1999.781643","url":null,"abstract":"Computing with words [Zadeh, 1995] is fundamental to our understanding the foundation of fuzzy theory. Naturally, there are a large variety of \"words\" that we need to recognize and utilize in our computational paradigms. However, descriptive and veristic words are essential for the fundamental derivation of fuzzy set and logic formulas. Descriptive linguistic terms help us assign an element to a fuzzy set with a membership value. Whereas the veristic words determine the degree of truthhood associated with a descriptive membership value. Understanding this distinction between descriptive and veristic linguistic terms form the basis of deriving the normal forms of fuzzy set and logic formulas. Within this perspective, there are potentially four possible fuzzy set and logic theories. Each of these has their own unique formulas. Most of the current literature is based on a \"myopic\" theory which is an approximation of the fuzzy set and two-valued logic based formalism. These issues are presented in our attempt toward restructuring the foundations of fuzzy theory.","PeriodicalId":335957,"journal":{"name":"18th International Conference of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society - NAFIPS (Cat.
