This paper, through a literature review attempts to discuss the policy environment underpinning the dynamics of prostitution. The following factors have been identified as possible push factors to prostitution: paucity of economic resources, increased phenomenon of matrifocal families; cultural attrition and increased state of moral decadence. Further, discussion on whether to legalise or criminalise prostitution has been pertinent, with forces in support of criminalizing the practice leaning on the phenomenon’s impact to the practitioners’ health and psychological well-being; and the fact that most societies consider it both illegal and immoral. The paper ends up by making the following proposals: Improving policies that foster economic development; strengthening empowerment programmes that will facilitate the practitioners from exiting from the practice; educating the masses on the interplay between prostitution and prevalence of HIV/AIDS; as well as fixing a proper trademark on prostitution.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123923523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), some of the languages are used in both the public and the private domains while other languages are only used in the private sectors. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the language factors affecting the inferior status of the Katanga language in the DRC. The study examined the impacts of French, English and Kiswahili dominant languages over the status of the Katanga language in relation to the strategies used by its speakers to revitalise its usage. The study employed qualitative research method which used a case study design. A purposeful sample of thirty (30) Congolese-Katanga people was used in this study. Data were collected through interviews. The findings revealed that the Katanga language was endangered since it was not used in the public domains such as education in the DRC. The study recommended the use of the Katanga language at the schools or the universities.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130714231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the family is a critical part of the society, there is a need to protect it. The society achieves this by protecting the marriage institution. Different scholars have approached the institution of marriage from different perspectives including amongst others, the Western cultural perspective and the African cultural perspective. In the Western culture marriage is viewed as an event that primarily concerns the bride and groom only, while in the African culture it is viewed as communal and primarily concerns two families. Customary law practices of the Vhavenda community also guard the institution of the family. The qualitative methodology was used in this study. Purposive sampling was used to select a sample of 10 senior traditional leaders from within the Vhavenda community who were then subjected to interviews.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134126338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today, in addition to the failure of providing democratic policing, police officials are found guilty of human rights violations and are accused of violent and abusive actions while attending to their duties. In this paper the researcher looks at the present-day failures in policing violent crimes and to analyse strategies to strengthen democratic policing. The researcher used media reports, literature and police officers’ experiences to study the failures in policing violent crimes in a democratic South Africa to come up with strategies to strengthen democratic policing. The researcher found that the use of arbitrary policing powers and other concomitant failures influenced the increase in violent crimes in South Africa. This paper is therefore aimed at improving the control of violent crimes by strengthening democratic policing.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124124708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In South Africa within the last two decades, there has been a crumbling of an oppressive legal order (apartheid), which was replaced by a new democratic order. This new order does not seem to have affected only the apartheid legacy, but it has also affected other spheres of life, marriage being one of them. Concerning customary marriages, an Act of Parliament known as the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act (Act 120 0f 1998)(RCMA) was enacted to give effect to the new legal order, that is, in particular, to address the inequality that had been midwifed by customary practices. The study made use of the qualitative research approach to collect data from secondary resources. This paper seeks to describe, compare and analyze the transition from customary marriages law practices to the RCMA practices in South Africa.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133626741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of five hundred students were selected through cluster and random sampling method from all junior secondary schools in Ogun state. Two self-developed instruments: Social Habits and Students’ Academic Performance Questionnaire (SHSAPQ) and Girl-child Marriage and Academic Performance Questionnaire (GCMAPQ) were administered on the respondents with reliability co-efficient of 0.79 at 0.05 significant levels. An inferential statistics of Chi-square was used in testing the hypotheses and the result of the study showed that modern technological advancement especially, addiction to social media on the internet has a great effect on students’ academic performance. The researchers concluded that negative social habits among the students are to be discouraged in order for them to record good academic performance.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116211360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study upon which the paper has been based took the form of a literature review. There is a great deal of evidence to suggest that parents tend to blame themselves upon discovering that a child of theirs has a disability. Some parents experience great difficulty in obtaining medical or educational information to assist them to deal with the disabilities of their children. In addition, the children themselves are often subjected to mistreatment as a result of their ignorance, particularly as a result of having little or no knowledge or understanding of sexuality. Disabled children are also often subjected to being excluded from inalienable human rights such as having access to an acceptable quality of education. In the light of the challenges which they face in these respects, it is recommended that there should be a concerted and a committed endeavour to maximise public awareness and education through the printed, audio and visual media, in order to bring an end to the stigma and the additional challenges, such as social exclusion, which often accompany disabilities for children, by promoting and monitoring inclusive systems for communities and all institutions which are dedicated to meeting the needs of children, including schools.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133724234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both the social capital and the bio-ecosystems theories were employed to elucidate the concept of positive fatherhood, its value in Early Childhood Education (ECE), and some of its inhibitors and enhancers. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from ten fathers. Data was analysed through content analysis method. Key findings reveal that participants define positive fatherhood in relation to being able to provide for their families. The value of positive fatherhood in ECE is perceived in terms of breaking the cycle of poverty and ensuring bright futures for children. The main inhibitor of positive fatherhood is the weak relationship between teachers and fathers, whereas the main enhancer is forging strong ties with fathers and the community at large. The implications on research and practice are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131236116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To understand the importance of an oral narrative, recourse has often been made to these various disciplines. Ironically, the anthropologists interested in cultures of the races of the world dominated studies of oral literature, from the late 19th century. The result was that narratives were often subjected to functional analysis for aesthetic content. The paper therefore, is a collaborative endeavor, which utilizes insights from literary, sociological or anthropological and historical perspectives to analyze oral narratives. This, it is hoped, will enhance a better understanding of the narratives, not only from their cultural background but also from their artistic and aesthetic background.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124101920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study was to explore the relation between life orientation and adolescent pregnancies in the selected secondary schools in the Blue Crane Route Municipality. Qualitative data was obtained through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions conducted with the students, social workers and the life orientation educators. The data were analysed thematically using content analytic techniques. The findings revealed that life orientation did not reduce adolescent pregnancies in the Blue Crane Route Municipality. Furthermore, the majority of the youth within this municipality lived in extreme poverty and opt falling pregnant at an early age to receive a social grant (child support grant) as a means of income for the household. Also, despite being educated on contraception as the means of pregnancy prevention, the students did not use the contraception especially condoms because of the peer-pressure. Therefore, massive unemployment in this Municipality led to the poverty stricken households with its many ramifications. It is recommended that it would be beneficial to this Municipality to request health care practitioners to visit the high schools at least once per month to avail contraception to the female students.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128407218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
