The paper used a literature review methodology to reflect on substance abuse trends, legislations, methods and strategies towards revealing their inherent weaknesses and shortfalls which are rendering NDMPs ineffective and/or unsuccessful in South Africa. The findings of the paper demonstrated that poor articulation of the NDMPS, poor boarder control mechanisms, corruption, emphasis on supply reduction and neglect of harm reduction strategies, lack of social capital and repugnant and unpalatable religious and cultural beliefs are some of the factors causing the NDMPs to continue to fail in their quest of rehabilitating South African environments of drugs. The paper concluded by proposing that, for NDMPS to be a success, South Africa needs to mobilize adequate social capital for NDMPs, make available enough financial resources for treatment and preventative work, upgrade boarder control systems, make treatment services easily available to disenfranchised groups including women, children and rural populations, create knowledge sharing platforms for those who work with addictions and build community based detoxification facilities.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117256476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper determines whether alcoholism affects UNIVEN female students’ academic performance. The research paper employed qualitative design data collection methods. Snowball sampling was used to select six participants who were all University of Venda students. Snowball sampling method was considered suitable for this paper as it was difficult to locate people who drank excessively and who were willing to participate in the study. Data was collected from female students who drank alcohol and were in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th level of their study. Data were analysed thematically. The findings revealed that daily life challenges faced by female students lead them to drink alcohol which leads to numerous consequences. It has been recommended that drinking alcohol should be avoided since it is very dangerous to the lives of people, especially female students.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114569867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study is to compare the manners in which Afrikaans first language (L1) and Sesotho first language (L1) speakers make requests when speaking English. The Cross Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (CCSARP) framework of Blum-Kulka was utilized to analyze the requests made by these two groups. The outcomes revealed that Afrikaans speakers used fewer politeness and alert markers as compared to Sesotho speakers who utilized more. The implications of these findings are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":" 1146","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120826345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research aimed at assessing the awareness of Social Studies’ teachers in South-West Nigeria about the effects of economic and social integration in the region. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires through the use of random sampling. The objectives of the research were to examine the perception and also to assess the awareness of Social Studies’ teachers on the economic and social integration in South-West Nigeria. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics. The field survey confirmed that some of these barriers were notably political in nature. They include: cultural values, religion and beliefs, needs, social themes and economy. The findings also identified the search for solutions to these barriers faced by the people in South-West Nigeria by providing an insight for further research regarding the institutional weaknesses and policy issues in this part of the world. The implications of the findings were that unless the limitations named above are resolved, the economic and social integration in the South-West Nigeria will continue to experience poor economic growth and development. Recommendations to overcome these barriers are suggested.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124458649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Images are central in all works of art because they represent something abstract or concrete and explicit or implicit to convey and illustrate the idea in an appropriate manner. Evocative images appeal to various senses that are selected to convey messages from the sender to the receiver. Various aspects of poems that are considered for analysis in this study are poetic diction, denotative and connotative images. Imagery is manifested in various forms for reflection of meanings, emotions and ideas. Referential function is a research technique of analysing literature whereby the literary analyst carefully reads a literary work of art and thereafter examines it according to his or her own opinions with more focus on the sender and recipient.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"166 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128618261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characteristics and functions of the animals play a role in the formation of the proverbs. This is a qualitative study on thematic explications and stylistic observations. The analysis looks at the thematic classification, form and functionalistic perspective of proverbs. The theme considers humanness, good disposition, conceit, uncertainty, hardship, enmity, good fortune, misfortune, threats and obstinacy. The proverbs are singled out from other oral literature aspects such as riddles, idioms, folktales and praises. This is because of proverbs’ unique characteristics of being rich in vocabulary, fixed, figurative, pithy and packed with wisdom of the ages. Proverbs are basic oral expressions of culture, social life, skills of verbal coercion effective means of communication and art of rational discourse. They enrich Siswati language because they are poetic in nature, loaded with symbols and metaphors. Their language is characterized by a wide use of figures of speech.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132452140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The literature on instructional leadership discusses the multiple roles that school principals are expected to perform but fails to analyse how the stakeholders in schools influence their work. This paper is based on a research project that departs from the premise that principals do not work in isolation or in a vacuum but in collaboration with other stakeholders, such as SGBs. The research approach used in this study was qualitative and data was collected from five schools, using semi-structured interviews. The findings of this study show that different principals tend to establish different types of relationships with their governing bodies and that they receive various levels of support. Positive relationship between principals and their governing bodies seem to play important supportive role that encourage instructional leadership.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128466325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Questions are being raised about school heads’ ability to influence teachers in their day-to-day practice. Hence, this qualitative ethnographic study with a focus on leader influence behaviours employed by school heads to motivate teachers to attain school goals. Two schools were purposively sampled and at each school the school head and five teachers were selected as participants. Data was generated using interviews and participant observation. The study found that school heads utilised a variety of influence behaviours in the different core areas of their work. A blend, instead of the use of just one influence behaviour at a time increased the chances of a positive outcome. The researchers concluded that to be a good leader a school head ought to deploy a cocktail of leader influence behaviours that is context dependent.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126501287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study, therefore, showed a comparative analysis of students’ performance in Economics Concepts and other Social Studies Concepts with a view to determining the relevance of Economics Concepts among other Concepts in the Social Studies Curriculum. Descriptive research was carried out in twenty (20) junior secondary schools with 200 respondents in Nigeria. Two instruments whose reliability coefficient values are 0.78 and 0.82 were used. Data was analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and t-test to determine the differences in students’ performance. The study showed that the inclusion of economics concepts into the content of social studies curriculum is justified and capable of helping to achieve the objectives of social studies but not in isolation of other concepts. The study concludes that the economics concepts in social studies curriculum is imminent, as the knowledge acquired from it by students is applied even after graduation at school to solve emergencies.","PeriodicalId":334805,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130196655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
