The study employed a qualitative description with a case study design as the research method, and data collection was conducted online through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals with five English novice teachers selected through convenience sampling at the secondary school level. The findings revealed that novice English teachers had positive perceptions regarding the implementation of reflective teaching practices. English novice teachers applied some reflective practices in their teaching, but some practices proved challenging for them due to a lack of understanding, limited preparation time, and a lack of collaboration with peers, hindering them from engaging in more effective reflective practices. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of reflective teaching practices by English novice teachers in rural schools was less effective in developing the quality of their teaching. This study suggests that teacher education programs, especially for English teachers, and schools should equip prospective teachers with adequate understanding and support. This can be achieved through structured training programs, mentoring initiatives, and learning communities to prepare future English teachers for a successful teaching career in rural settings by fostering effective reflective teaching practices.","PeriodicalId":334664,"journal":{"name":"ELP (Journal of English Language Pedagogy)","volume":"79 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139629856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research sample consisted of 150 students, comprising 67 males and 83 females. The sample was selected using convenience sampling technique, and all participants signed an informed consent form. This correlational study employed statistic analysis to determine the relationships among independent and dependent variables. Statistical analysis involved Pearson correlation test, independent t-test, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results showed that writing performances of male and female groups were significantly different. However, the evidence strengthening the claim that male and female learners perform differently in terms of linguistic aspects of written outcomes was limited. Gender proceeded to explain considerable differences in writing performance, in addition to composition skills. \u0000 ","PeriodicalId":334664,"journal":{"name":"ELP (Journal of English Language Pedagogy)","volume":"56 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139630044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sign language has evolved into a practical mode of communication that forms the basis of deaf communities. It is a visual-spatial language based on positional and visual elements including the shape of digits and hands, position, orientation, limb, and gestures. This signal can be seen in a small box at the corners of television newscasts. This research reviews the use of sign language as media in delivering information (news) in TV broadcasts. This research was library research. The analysis showed that news programs broadcast by television stations become one of the providers of information. The existence of sign language facilities in news programs at this time at least minimizes gaps in the right to access information among persons with deaf disabilities. Several previous studies show that sign language is media information read by the news anchor to the TV audience (viewers) with the intermediary of a sign language interpreter. Sign language plays an active role for deaf people based on three effects of mass communication which provide direct cognitive, affective, and conative effects for deaf people. There is a relationship between the influence of the use of sign language in news programs on deaf people such as attracting the attention of deaf audiences with an easy visualization. A presentation of the news is enough to meet the information needs of the deaf person by continuing to prioritize the latest information. \u0000 ","PeriodicalId":334664,"journal":{"name":"ELP (Journal of English Language Pedagogy)","volume":"28 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140513773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some students showed low vocabulary proficiency together with low listening proficiency, while others showed high proficiency in both areas. The study aims to investigate the relationship between students' vocabulary mastery and their listening ability. Using a correlational design, the research involved a population of 105 second semester English students at UIN Bukittinggi, using cluster sampling due to the larger population size. Data collection methods included tests to assess vocabulary mastery and listening skills. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was used for analysis using SPSS 25. The results showed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.892) between students' vocabulary mastery and listening ability. This correlation falls in the high range (0.70-0.90), indicating a robust relationship between the two variables. Hypothesis testing further supported this correlation, with the calculated rxy (0.892) exceeding the critical value of the r-table (0.344) at α = 0.05. Therefore, the research accepts the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and rejects the null hypothesis (Ho), confirming the positive correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and listening skills.","PeriodicalId":334664,"journal":{"name":"ELP (Journal of English Language Pedagogy)","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139630675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The monotonous media such as using a dictionary was attributed to factors such as rote memorization and the lack of diverse instructional media. Therefore, monopoly games were selected as a teaching medium to investigate their impact on students' vocabulary mastery. The research employed a quasi-experimental design, and the population comprised 45 seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Paninjauan for the 2022/2023 academic year. Cluster random sampling was utilized to select a sample of 30 students, with 15 assigned to the experimental group and 15 to the control group. The experimental and control groups were determined through a random draw. The pre-test score averaged 47.33, but it significantly increased to 85 after the intervention. Analysis using an independent samples T-test indicated that monopoly games had a more substantial impact compared to dictionary. The rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) suggested a significant positive effect of using monopoly games as a teaching medium on students' vocabulary mastery in the seventh grade at SMPN 2 Paninjauan for the 2022/2023 academic year. Based on the findings, it is recommended that teachers consider this research when exploring a broader range of teaching media to enhance student engagement in vocabulary learning.","PeriodicalId":334664,"journal":{"name":"ELP (Journal of English Language Pedagogy)","volume":"9 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139630830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this issue and encourage active usage of English, it is crucial to focus on vocabulary development through effective learning practices. In this context, the researcher sought a solution to enhance writing skills and promote a deeper understanding of word meanings. The chosen approach involved incorporating an engaging and enjoyable medium, namely the Puzzle game, as a means of facilitating vocabulary growth. The Puzzle game, specifically the Word Search Puzzle, was selected as it not only serves as a game but also captures students' interest by sparking curiosity about hidden words. In a Word Search Puzzle game, players search for concealed words in provided boxes, guided by word clues. These words may be arranged vertically, horizontally, or diagonally within the grid. The study involves a sample of 20 students selected from the entire population. Utilizing SPSS 22 for calculations, the results indicate statistical significance, leading to the conclusion that the Word Search Puzzle game is effective in enhancing vocabulary. This finding underscores the proven efficacy of the Word Search Puzzle game as a learning medium, demonstrating its capacity to augment students' vocabularies. Consequently, teachers can consider integrating this method into their teaching practices to facilitate effective vocabulary instruction.","PeriodicalId":334664,"journal":{"name":"ELP (Journal of English Language Pedagogy)","volume":"84 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139630551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focused on the comment section of the @Medantalkviral account on the Thread platform. The study employed Yanchung and Yanhong (2013) elaboration theory, supported by Fisherman (1972), to understand the meanings of slang expressions. The approach examined how these expressions were articulated in texts, whether fully or partially, in order to gain a nuanced understanding. Using observation and recording techniques, including screenshots, the data consisted of words and comments from Medan residents via the social media account @Medantalkviral. The analysis employed analogy and intralingual methods, revealing 12 newly invented slang expressions on social media. The results showed a variety of slang forms, including words, phrases, clauses, and sentences, with identified linguistic functions such as identity, kinship/politeness, emotional expression, directive function, and referential function. This study contributed to a broader understanding of linguistic phenomena in the digital age and the multifaceted nature of slang in social interactions.","PeriodicalId":334664,"journal":{"name":"ELP (Journal of English Language Pedagogy)","volume":"8 36","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139630780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research used a descriptive qualitative approach, which refers to research methods that produce descriptive data using a pragmatic approach. The data was collected from the most followed K-POP pages on Instagram in Indonesia: @fyi.korea, @officialkvibes, and @coppamagz. The objects of this study are the hate comments found on these Instagram pages. The theory used to analyze the data was speech act theory, which consists of locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. This was followed by the identification of double standards. Pragmatic coding specifically targets linguistic patterns that indicate double standards. Based on the results of observations on these sites, it was found that some of the data included hate comments aimed at several K-pop idols. The results of the study indicate that the topics that receive the most hate comments were related to dating scandals, the sexy appearance of K-Pop artists, and  the physical appearance and visual aspects. Based on the results, the double standard towards the involved K-POP artists is glaringly obvious. It can be concluded that there were two main factors that contribute to this double standard: gender and popularity. In terms of gender, female K-POP artists are criticized and receive hate comments more often than their male counterparts. Meanwhile, in terms of popularity, K-POP artists who are more popular tend to receive more hate comments than those who are less popular.","PeriodicalId":334664,"journal":{"name":"ELP (Journal of English Language Pedagogy)","volume":"10 32","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139630822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study revealed several issues affecting students’ motivation in learning English. Specifically, many students lacked interest in studying English, experienced a lack of motivation from teachers, but received a reward at the end of the semester for the highest score. Additionally, a significant number of students failed to complete homework due to inadequate parental support. Furthermore, students found English to be a challenging subject because of a lack of peer support. The study comprised 65 students, with a sample size of 24, selected using purposive sampling.  Data were collected using questionnaires and documentation. The coefficient of correlation was determined to be -0.114, indicating no significant relationship between extrinsic motivation and academic achievement in English studies among the students. In other words, according to hypothesis testing, the t-score was -0.114 while the t-table was 0.432. This indicates that the t-score was lower than the t-table. As a result, Ha was rejected and Ho was accepted, indicating that there was no significant correlation between students' extrinsic motivation and their academic achievement in the study of English.","PeriodicalId":334664,"journal":{"name":"ELP (Journal of English Language Pedagogy)","volume":"85 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139630641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
