Two types of loads are explicitly modeled: non-thermostatically controllable (electric vehicle, shiftable appliances) and thermostatically controllable loads (air conditioner, electric water heater). In this investigation, the use of data-mining methods for building models of electrical consumption and renewable generation aimed at integrating renewable generation for smart grid control is studied. The results presented are part of the I3RES project that aims at building future energy solutions for smart electric grids considering the typical uncertainties of the renewable generation. Our results indicate that the data-mining techniques are able to provide forecasts with reasonable accuracy in the presence of uncertainties. Furthermore, such forecasts are useful in building controllers that can perform control actions such as demand side management in smart grids.","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116884954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reduced energy consumption of these motors is evaluated in a public water system case study under variable frequency conditions. The importance of the consideration of a combined system, which includes variable speed control, motor and load - as opposed to only replacing with high efficiency motors for energy saving purposes - is practically observed and reported on. The paper reports on the marginal improvement in energy consumption at reduced supply frequency for motor replacement only (not surprising) but a very impressive 46% saving in energy consumption by controlling pumped water at a reduced but constant delivery rate.","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127452517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within the development of control strategies and algorithms for Smart Grids, simulation is of major importance, as for financial and safety reasons tests in the field can be performed only very late in the development process. In order to obtain results not only for dedicated research questions in defined simulation settings but also to allow a claim of generality, the evaluation of control strategies has to rely on a sound experimental design. Appropriate Smart Grid simulation scenarios, defining the power grid including all energy resources and loads down to the grid connection node, are part of such an experimental design. This paper presents a generalized process model to obtain regionally-specific Smart-Grid scenarios, illustrating the process with two exemplary research projects.","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125131179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These tendencies are typical for Riga city - the capital of Latvia and main administrative, industrial, financial, business and cultural centers. Existent 10 kV base voltage in Riga cannot provide increasing requirements to the feed of the large loads in infrastructure of modern cities. The introduction of higher voltage level should be justified by the economical and technical possibilities and advantages in comparison with the existing system of power supply. The paper focuses on the conception of 20 kV voltage introducing in Riga, evaluate the technical and economic possibilities for the progressive or sharp changing of voltage, develop the methodology of management of voltage level changing process in the distribution network of the large city. In the paper the technical economical model of the urban power supply system for the its qualitative and quantitative evaluation is presented.
