In this paper a novel predictive control strategy with a fixed switching frequency for a voltage source inverter is proposed, with the aim of obtaining a modulated waveform at the output of the converter with a natural reduction of the common mode voltage. The feasibility of this strategy is evaluated using simulation results to demonstrate the advantages of predictive control, such as fast dynamic response and the easy inclusion of nonlinearities and they are compared with the modulated model predictive control (M2PC) proposed recently.","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122644755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While most works only consider the impedance is related with the state-of-charge (SOC), very little attention has been put upon the rate dependence of impedance. In this work, the impedance of a battery has been considered to be dependent on the SOC and the charging or discharging rate. A series of charging and discharging tests are proposed to extract the impedance values based on an equivalent circuit model without electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurement. The rate dependence of impedance has been analysed in detail, and the results show that it cannot be neglected for some applications which involve charging or discharging at different rates if high accuracy is required.","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123749516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is the primary advantage in comparison to ceramic and therefore is the first to be investigated when field aged insulators are examined. Initially hydrophobicity was evaluated by static contact angle measurements. However field and laboratory investigations have revealed that in the case of outdoor high voltage insulation, it is the dynamic performance that is critical and especially the capability of hydrophobicity recovery, available due to a low molecular weight molecules migration mechanism. This mechanism efficiency is related to the material formulation but also to the experienced service conditions and the ageing degree of the insulator. Therefore laboratory evaluation of field aged insulators can be considerably beneficial for both researchers and utilities. In this direction the hydrophobicity recovery efficiency of three field aged insulators, with two different base polymers is investigated in this paper. Both static and dynamic measurements are performed, according to the CIGRE guidelines. The results verify the superiority of silicone rubber polymer and reveal a recovery time exceeding 10 hours. Not considerable differences have been observed due to aging in this case. Further investigation is required, in order to be able to correlate this behavior to the insulator efficiency.","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"30 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113941336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Employing power cables originally designed for use in distribution networks for connecting renewable energy units into the energy system may cause problems, which have been observed in previous investigations. In order to study these effects, a number of cable testing methods must be applied. The purpose of this paper is to describe the possible effects of unconventional energy production on cable systems and list the various methods applicable in identifying and preventing cable failures. A long-term goal of this research is to gain a better understanding of cable system behavior in the presence of renewable power generation and how the reliability of cable systems could be increased.","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129012202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are the choice of actuation for the collimators in the Large Hadron Collider, the largest particle accelerator at CERN. In this case the combination of precise positioning requirements and the highly radioactive operating environment is unique. The latter forces both the use of long cables to connect the motors to the drives and also prevents the use of standard position sensors. However, reliable and precise operation of the collimators is critical for the machine. A problem arises however from the use of stepper motors in open-loop. The mechanics of the collimators can wear due to the abrupt motion and torque profiles that are applied by the motors. Closed-loop position control allows smoother movements to be applied but it requires position feedback. The use of sensors in radioactive environments is very limited for reliability reasons. In order to allow the use of position sensors without reducing the long term reliability of the whole system, the possibility to switch online from closed to open loop is proposed and validated in this paper. It allows the use of closed-loop control when the position sensors function correctly and to switch online to open-loop when there is a sensor failure, without the need to stop the machine.","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131094391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, changes in load patterns due to demand response (DR) activities at end-user premises, such as smart households, constitute a vital point to take into account both in system planning and operation phases. In this study, the assessment of the impacts of pricing based DR strategies on smart household load pattern variations is provided. The household load data sets are acquired from a provided model of a smart household, including appliance scheduling. Then, an artificial neural network (ANN) approach based on Wavelet Transform (WT) is employed for the forecasting of responsive residential load behaviors to different pricing schemes. From the literature perspective this study contributes by considering DR impacts on load pattern forecasting, being a very useful tool for market participants such as aggregators in future pool-based market structures, or for load serving entities to discuss potential change requirements in existing DR strategies, or even to effectively plan new ones.","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134601163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Framework for the integration of active tertiary prosumers into a smart distribution grid","authors":"J. Jimeno, N. Ruiz, K. Nowadays, the continuously increasing presence of distributed intermittent energy sources along with inelasticity of demand pose significant challenges and undoubtedly have considerably negative impact on the overall operation of the electricity grid. Furthermore, the energy market is considered as inherently incomplete and imperfectly competitive mainly due to the characteristics and special nature of the commodity of power. Demand Side Management (DSM) as a supportive mechanism for grid operation and market participation, has the unleashed capacity to overcome some of the major barriers of controlling supply and demand becoming a powerful tool at the hands of Distribution Grid Operators as well as other market stakeholders. The proposed approach uses advanced and innovative Distributed Energy Resources (DER) models, occupancy prediction mechanisms, users' preferences extraction algorithms and DER monitoring and control technologies for making it possible to provide high volumes of demand flexibility without impacting on final user's comfort and DER utility levels. The demand flexibility made available at building level is then aggregated in order to offer significant flexibility volumes with high reliability degree to Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and other energy stakeholders.","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115414191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Synchrogenverter — Hybrid generation system","authors":"W. Koczara, Piotr Szulawski","doi":"10.1109/POWERENG.2015.7266371","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/POWERENG.2015.7266371","url":null,"abstract":"The paper describes new topology of a generation system that consists of wound rotor synchronous generator and parallel connected power electronic converter. The wound rotor synchronous generator operates as AC voltage source whereas the power electronic converter as fully controllable current source. The converter with embedded energy storage delivers active and reactive power. The first main role of the converter is to deliver reactive power, what results in zero reactive power demanded from the synchronous generator. Thus the synchronous generator moves from cosφ = 0.8 to cosφ = 1. So if the generator keeps its rated current and unity power factor than its active power rises about 25%. Moreover the operation with cosφ = 1 results in significant reduction of its excitation current. Additionally the ability of quick production of the active and reactive power, by the parallel connected converter, keeps voltage and frequency stability in transients and so it permits to accept step load. Such a generation system that consists of the wound rotor synchronous generator, the parallel power electronic converter and common control of power flow is called “Synchrogenverter”. Paper presents theory and computer simulation study related to high power Synchrogenverter operating off grid (autonomously).","PeriodicalId":334135,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128910801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
