This jet is operated by a sub-microsecond pulsed voltage with a repetition rate of 1–10 kHz range. The working gas, helium, is fed into the plasma jet. The electrical property of the discharge has been studied by means of a classical DBD model. By fitting the fine structure of the emission bands of N3 to a model, plasma gas is found to be cooled to near room temperature (∼ 300 K) at 15 mm away from the jet nozzle exit, which is also verified by a thermocouple. Based on the analysis of the Hβ Stark broadening, the electron density inside the plasma jet nozzle is evaluated to be in the order of 1014 cm−3. Finally, the preliminary experiment confirmed the feasibility of disinfecting E.coli cells. It shows that adding oxygen could enhance the inactivating effect greatly and with 4% oxygen, the highest effect was obtained.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128435237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The device under test for these results is a research grade JFET with a rated blocking voltage of 1200V and a rated forward current of 10A with a power density of 200W/cm2. In order to drive the JFET device, a unique gate driver had to be designed and built to provide switching between two independent rail voltages. The gate driver had to be able to provide adjustable rail voltages with one rail ranging between 0V and −40V and the other rail going between 0V and 2.5V. The gate driver is completely isolated to operate on a high-side switch. In order to test these devices in pulsed switching applications a pulse ring down circuit was designed and built to provide a current pulse of 100A (10 times the rated current) with a charging voltage range between 100V and 500V. Special consideration had to be given to the design of this pulse ring down circuit in order to achieve a high di/dt, and therefore reach the target peak current levels.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128583964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system was developed for dual use, from laboratory to battlefield applications. The power supply is a dedicated coaxial Marx generator composed of specifically designed stages. In an 11 stages configuration, the rise time can be less than 15 ns (measured on a 50 Ω load) with an operating voltage reaching values up to 500 kV (with an open circuit configuration). An ultra compact (less than 2 liters) pulse forming stage (PFS) is directly connected to the output of the Marx generator. It is composed of a pulse sharpening assembly made up of a peaking and a multi channel grounding spark gap, running under a high pressure of nitrogen. These switches are followed by a monopulse-to-monocycle converter module, which is based on a Blumlein coaxial line. The bipolar signal at the output of the PFS has a total duration which can be adjusted from 1 to a few ns by the use of different lengths of the Blumlein module. For example, the smallest device generates a signal composed of two Gaussian pulses. A positive one is followed by a negative one and the two are separated by less than 500 ps peak to peak with rise times lower than 250 ps. Measured on a 50 Ω dedicated ultra wideband resistive load, the peak-to-peak output voltage is tunable up to 400 kV. With a right adjustment (in pressure and in distances inside the electrodes chamber) the maximum dV/dt can reach 2.1015 V/s. If a more important slope is required, it is possible to insert a pre-peaking stage between the Marx generator and the PFS. Using this stage allows to get performances in the order of 5.1015 V/s (rise times lower than 150 ps). The use of a coaxial 50 Ω output enables to connect the GIMLI source to many different types of antennas, allowing the radiation of WB or UWB electromagnetic signals. For instance, high-power radiation tests were performed with the pulser connected to a specific half TEM ridged horn. The results showed that the electrical field acquired at 10 m was higher than 150 kV/m peak to peak.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128647921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are two ways to increase density of energy storage in capacitors, increasing ratio capacitance or element operation voltage. In order to increase density of energy storage by lifting its operation voltage, a hybrid super-capacitor with electrolytic anode and electro-chemistry super-capacitor cathode was constructed. At the first, a physical module of hybrid super-capacitor element is setup, and its energy storage mechanism is interpreted. Then, the electric field of the hybrid super-capacitor and porous electrodes is analyzed. According to the relationship of operation voltage and capacitance by the results, some methods are put forward to improve the distribution of electric field and operation voltage. Some experiments were made with sample elements of hybrid super-capacitor. The results show that the operation voltage of hybrid super-capacitor element can be over 200V, and density of energy storage can be over 2.5kJ/L, it can give higher density of energy storage in application of pulsed power systems.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129606134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The First Axis, operating since 1999, produces a nominal 20-MeV, 2 kA single pulse with 60 ns width. In contrast, the DARHT Second Axis produces up to four pulses in a variable pulse format by slicing micro-pulses out of a longer pulse (∼1.6 microseconds flattop) of nominal beam energy and current of 17 MeV and 1.8 kA respectively. Bremsstrahlung x-rays are produced by focusing the electron beam-pulses onto a high-Z target. The DARHT Facility achieved full operational status in FY2010 with the successful execution of five dual-axis experiments, including an explosively driven flyer plate and four integrated weapon hydrotests. This paper focuses on the second axis accelerator and its components. The injector consists of an 88 stage Marx delivering 2.5 MV to a 6.25 inch diameter thermionic cathode. A crowbar switch in the Marx tank can shorten the 2 µs pulse to as little as 200 ns. The beam is accelerated in a Linear Induction Accelerator (LIA) consisting of 74 cells operating at a total of 14.5 MV, delivering a beam of ∼17 MeV and ∼1.6 µs flattop at the accelerator exit. Each cell is driven by an individual Pulse Forming Network (PFN) tuned to provide voltage regulation of ±1%. The design and performance of the injector, accelerator cells and PFNs are described herein.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127356672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, differences in streamer branches in gas, liquid and supercritical phases of CO2 are evaluated by means of fractal dimension. The experimental results are summarized as follows: 1) a tree-like streamer growing from the tip of needle was successfully visualized. The field strength for streamer initiation and the mean velocity of the streamer are estimated as approximately 9 MV/cm and 60 km/s, respectively. Pre-breakdown phenomena in SCCO2 are divided into two processes: streamer growth and shockwave expansion. 2) Streamer branches in SC phase were found to be more complicated than in other phase of CO2. 3) Bubble formation in the streamer initiation process was not recognized in SCCO2. For dielectric breakdown, the cylindrical shockwave grows along the streamer channel. A trace of light emission is recognized near the center of the arc column with a residual image of the streamer.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131066900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The PBII system has two main objectives; support surface engineering research and assist the development of new pulsed power modulators for plasma applications. The results of preliminary tests done in nitrogen gas atmosphere, with 1011 cm−3 ion density and 0.1 Pa pressure are discussed. About 25 µs width, 1 kHz negative pulses, of ∼10 kV negative amplitude, were applied to a metallic cylinder (100 mm × 10 mm) vertically placed on it, drawing 6 A peak current. However, the rate of plasma de-ionization and subsequent cooling of the de-ionized plasma between switching pulses restrict the recovery time of the spark gap, thereby reducing its pulse repetition rate. In addition, the breakdown voltage for the spark gap switching in a self-breakdown mode is inversely proportional to the repetition rate under continuous operation. The author earlier used microplasma assisted single spark gap at the high repetition rate. This paper will present an extended work by operating two parallel spark gaps in the self breakdown mode to increase the repetition rate up to 1 MHz. The operating parameters of the spark gap are optimized for the repetition rate and the self-breakdown voltage capability.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130857078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
