Given the dynamic and complex nature of the on-body channels, link quality estimation models are crucial in the design of mobility management protocols and power control protocols. In order to achieve a good estimation of link quality in WBSNs, we combine multiple body-related factors into a model that includes: the transmission power, the body position, the body shape and composition characteristics and the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) as an indicator of link quality. In this paper, we propose the Anfis Link Quality Estimator (A-LQE) that has been trained with RSSI values measured at different transmission power levels in a sample of 37 human subjects. Once the accuracy and reliability of our proposed model have been analysed, we apply the model to adapt the transmission power to the link characteristics for energy optimization. The obtained average energy savings reach the 26% in comparison with the maximum transmission power mode.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115124107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the last few years, the energy-efficiency aspect is becoming more and more important and for this reason a lot of research effort has focused on the optimization of energy consumption, especially for what concerns commercial buildings, since they contribute to the 70% of the total energy consumption of an electrical grid. In addition, commercial buildings are usually already equipped with highly-instrumented distributed systems and infrastructures that simplify the creation of a smart environment. Nevertheless, we believe that also residential buildings should be taken into account, since their energy consumption is not negligible (they account for the remaining 30%) and the flexibility of their occupants in the usage of appliances (generally much higher than the ones of commercial buildings) could be better exploited. Within this context, we analyze the hardware infrastructure, intended as the network of sensors, actuators, appliances and accumulators, of this kind of buildings. Moreover, we discuss which kind of networking infrastructures is needed in order to cope with the particularities of complex residential buildings. Finally, we envision a layered architecture, from the aforementioned hardware layer to an envisioned application layer, providing also examples of what could be done, in the near future, to increase the capabilities of our living spaces.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122686609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems are able to sense and adapt automatically to the current environmental context. In this paper, we present a formal approach based on bigraphical reactive systems for modeling the main features of context-aware systems. The proposed formalism provides a clear separation between the part of the system which is affected by the context and the remaining part. In order to illustrate its potential, we apply our approach through a detailed case study of a smart car system.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"199 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124380011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since they can be used for an efficient management of the energy consumption of buildings, there is a growing interest for them, both in academia and industry. Unfortunately, nowadays, these systems are still designed manually with ad-hoc solutions. As a consequence, a huge effort has to be spent for each new smart building. Within this context, aim of this work is to propose a methodology to automate the design process of such smart spaces. The paper presents an overview of the design flow implemented to support the design of scalable architectures for energy aware smart spaces.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123767590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a general model of MPSoC and define a debugging cycle targeting errors by applying temporal and spatial selection criteria. The idea behind spatial and temporal selection is to consider not the entire execution of the whole application but replay a part of the application during a specific execution interval. The proposed mechanisms are connected to GDB and allow for a visual representation of the considered part of the trace. The approach is validated on two execution platforms and two multimedia applications.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126864568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the UAV-WSN system has some differences with conventional WSN system. So it is important to design an appropriate scheme to control the transmission in a UAV-WSN system. In this paper we proposed a protocol called A-OAloha (Adaptive-Opportunistic Aloha) for UAV-UAV-WSN system to guarantee its efficiency. This protocol is based on a cross-layer design and is designed with the consideration of the distribution of the successful sensors, energy consumption and the transmission efficiency. For the distribution of the successful sensors, we design a mechanism based on the priority to make the distribution more uniform and the priority could be adaptively changed. For the consideration of energy-efficiency we choose to use the method that make the sensors go into sleep when they do not need to send data until a beacon signal from the UAV is received to transmit data. For the transmission efficiency we added a communication stage in every interval based on the O-Aloha scheme to enlarge the throughput under an acceptable system Bit Error Rate (BER).","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128893666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However the current semantic discovery approaches still depend on specific set of vocabularies used by device developers to describe devices. This paper presents a cycle of design, implementation and evaluation of a system that can be used to discover connected devices described by different terminologies. The device descriptions are homogenized using a best effort approach based on searching synonyms and abbreviations in online dictionaries, as well as using existing controlled vocabularies with terms and synonyms that can be used interchangeably within specific application domain. This information is stored in a local ontology that is extended dynamically with metadata and terminology when new devices are connected. Subjective evaluations with users showed their satisfaction regarding the usability of the system. Tested users also considered that the structure of the ontology is simple to understand and able to cover the description of several different devices.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132612743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Heterogeneous architectures that can be tailored towards the specific needs of a particular application are a promising alternative to state-of-the-art server systems. In this paper, we present a novel highly-scalable server architecture that seamlessly integrates variable combinations of general purpose CPUs, embedded CPUs, FPGAs, and GPUs. Embedded CPUs based on the latest ARM Cortex-A15 devices with integrated embedded GPUs are combined with FPGA-based reconfigurable SoCs, which can be used for application-specific hardware acceleration. A dedicated monitoring network enables continuous control and fine-grained observation of all relevant system parameters. Communication between the compute nodes is established by a flexible multi-level interconnect that can be adapted to various Ethernet and Infiniband standards. The communication facilities are further enhanced by direct high-bandwidth, low-latency links between the embedded FPGA-based reconfigurable SoCs.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127906614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, effective multicore system specialization can require a priori knowledge of the applications, application profiling information, and/or dynamic hardware tuning to schedule and execute applications on the most energy efficient cores. Furthermore, even though highly disparate core heterogeneity and/or highly configurable parameters with numerous potential parameter values result in more fine-grained specialization and higher energy savings potential, these large design spaces are challenging to efficiently explore. To address these challenges, we propose a novel configuration-subsisted heterogeneous and configurable multicore system, wherein each core offers a small subset of the design space, and propose a novel scheduling and tuning (SaT) algorithm to efficiently exploit the energy savings potential of this system. Our proposed architecture and algorithm require no a priori application knowledge or profiling, and incurs minimal runtime overhead. Results reveal energy savings potential and insights on energy tradeoffs in heterogeneous, configurable systems.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128877364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we study a specific kind of MSNs that is formed impromptu (e.g. when people carrying mobile devices gather at some social events). We refer to them as Impromptu Mobile Social Networks (IMSNs). Due to the dynamic nature of such networks, routing poses special challenges. The existing social-based MSN routing algorithms that take advantage of stable social relationships or social features of people in the network may not be suitable for IMSNs. Thus, new routing algorithms that can catch node contact behavior need to be designed for IMSNs. We first propose two statistical-based theoretical routing algorithms named BerRout and PoiRout inspired by the node contact models in several papers and then put forward a practical routing algorithm UpDown which makes routing decisions based on a simple Counter capturing the ups and downs of people's relationships formed in an IMSN. We compare our algorithms with the existing social-based MSN routing algorithms by simulations. The results show that the practical algorithm performs close to the two theoretical ones and all of our proposed algorithms outperform the existing ones in terms of performance versus cost in an IMSN environment.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"85 S60","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120854682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
