They are now cheaper and widespread, but still a lot of time is spent by the users to configure them: users adapt to their own device, not vice versa. Can our smart phones do something smarter? In this work, we propose a framework to support the development of context aware applications for Android devices: the goal of such applications is to reduce as much as possible the interaction with the user, making use of automatic and intelligent components. Moreover, these components should consume as less power and computational resources as possible, being them part of a mobile ecosystem whose battery and hardware are highly constrained. The work implies the study of a methodology that fits the Android framework and the design of a highly extensible software architecture. An open source framework based on the proposed methodology is then described. Some use cases are finally presented, analyzing the performances and the limitations of the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122406889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has brought to the need of ad-hoc, energy-aware protocols suitable for low-power and lossy networks. Among these, Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is surely one of the most interesting ones. It chooses the optimal routes from a source to a destination node, based on specific metrics. In this work we present a RPL compliant composite metric that considers both reliability and energy. Its aim is twofold. First, it realizes energy consumption balancing, so that each node tends to consume the same amount of energy of all the others, thus prolonging the overall network lifetime. Second, it takes into account data reliability along the paths, expressed by the well known Expected Transmission Count (ETX). The effectiveness of the proposed metric is confirmed by some interesting simulation results, that strongly encourage a deeper investigation on this issue.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"43 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120917296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The field of application reaches from smart home over factory automation up to smart cities. One of the main aspects of this technology is a dynamic device and service discovery. For this purpose, the WS-Discovery standard is used. WS-Discovery supports two modes: an infrastructure-based and an ad hoc mode. The infrastructure-based mode requires a service proxy, which represents a single point of failure. The ad hoc mode is based on the multicast and static response time values. Therefore, it shows a low scalability. In this work, we present a novel discovery approach, which bases on distributed hash tables (DHTs). DHTs are often utilized in peer-to-peer networks and represent a well-established technology. The search for devices and services is performed using hash values. The benefit of this approach is a high scalability, deterministic behavior, and flow control. The suggested approach can be applied for networks of any size. Since this approach uses unicast messages, it is not limited to local networks allowing the device and service discovery over multiple subnets or even over the Internet.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131788338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system can configure on the programmable device, such as a FPGA, a set of ReCPUs, each one exploiting a single instance of the regular expression matching task on the given input string. These cores work in parallel on the same string analyzing different possible matching of the regular expression. Since the system is able to exploit dynamic partial reconfigurations, it can adapt at run-time the number of cores configured on the device, accordingly with the complexity of the regular expression. The adoption of the proposed solution makes it also possible to parallelize the regular expression matching process with a multiple cores architecture drastically reducing the time required for the completion of the task. Finally, run-time reconfiguration capabilities also allow to reduce the amount of resources required by the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124085311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hull-based token bucket parameter setting allows the guarantee of Quality of Service for variable bitrate video streaming. Hull is an abstraction of the bitrate, following the bandwidth requirement evolution dynamically. In the case of multi-streaming, we investigate a shifting technique to reduce the peaks impact. Postponing the streaming starting time of a video helps to decrease the maximum required bandwidth. The technique is then mixed with the hull-based reservation. Simulations show the effectiveness of the combined approaches to optimize bandwidth usage, guaranteeing the best QoS for streaming. Online utilization is also discussed.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128734302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such systems normally do not include any security or safety mechanisms. The minority that do provide such functions often do so in an inflexible and ad hoc manner. The simple separation kernel demonstrated in this work enables a dynamic security model with minimal overhead and footprint. Furthermore, the provided functionality is simple enough to be used as a basis for provable security in embedded systems.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114120977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increased power and temperature exasperate the impact of degradation phenomena and shorten processors lifetime. This issue is particularly dramatic for mobile processors, characterized by variable workload and environmental conditions. Due to the different time scales at which reliability phenomena and computation happens, state-of-theartDRM solutions are evaluated using high-level workload and system models. To enable the design of workload-aware DRM with accurate reliability models, in this work we propose a software framework for virtualizing the processors reliability.Our framework captures the effect of variable workload and environmental conditions and allows to emulate longer degradation in a short time scale. We implement the framework on a realAndroid device and exploit it to enable workload-aware DynamicReliability Management (DRM).","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129843087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More than just comparing architectures with synthetic benchmarks, benchmarking is also more and more used to design specialized systems composed of heterogeneous computing resources to optimize the performance or performance/watt ratio (e.g. embedded systems designers build System-on-Chip (SoC) out of dedicated and well-chosen components). In the High-Performance-Computing (HPC) domain, systems are designed with symmetric and scalable computing nodes built to deliver the highest performance on a wide variety of applications. However, HPC is now facing cost and power consumption issues which motivate the design of heterogeneous systems. This is one of the rationales of the European FiPS project, which proposes to develop hardware architecture and software methodology easing the design of such systems. Thus, having a fair comparison between architectures while considering an application is of growing importance. Unfortunately, porting it on all available architectures using the related programming models is impossible. To tackle this challenge, we introduced a novel methodology to evaluate and to compare parallel architectures in order to ease the work of the programmer. Based on the usage of micro benchmarks, code profiling and characterization tools, this methodology introduces a semi-automatic prediction of sequential applications performances on a set of parallel architectures. In addition, performance estimation is correlated with the cost of other criteria such as power or portability effort. Introduced for targeting vision-based embedded applications, our methodology is currently being extended to target more complex applications from HPC world. This paper extends our work with new experiments and early results on a real HPC application of DNA sequencing.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122453648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traffic scheduling plays an important role in LTE technology by assigning the shared resources among users in the most efficient manner. The main objective of this paper aims to design an efficient scheduling algorithm for LTE standard. It can not only obtain the high system performance but also maintain the proportional fairness. Each user is allocated the requested resource according to the predefined QoS parameters. In this work we will focus on a system allowing to experimentally measure pressure profiles obtained from sensor nodes deployed on a NACA0012 aircraft wing model. By exploiting measurements gathered from sensors, allowing to measure pressure fluctuations of ±600Pa with a resolution of 4Pa, together with results obtained by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models, the system enables extracting flow profile, thus obtaining information on flow separation and stall phenomenon. Wireless measures are delivered with an enhanced version of IEEE802.15.4e, allowing to decrease power consumption by a factor of 7. Packet routing, based on Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL), has been improved by means of a newly introduced Lifetime and Latency Aggregatable Metric (L2AM) leading to a 18% increased network lifetime.","PeriodicalId":331736,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114517212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
