The conventionally used second harmonic current restrained method becomes unreliable for transformer protection. To obtain some new approaches on discrimination between inrush current and internal fault, transformer models with enough precision of computing inrush current and short-circuit current are firstly described. After that, Daubechies family wavelets are selected as a mother wavelet to analyze the inrush current and short-circuit current. The results show that the characteristics of inrush current are significantly different from those of short-circuit current. Based on the analyzing result, the back-propagation neural network is trained to discriminate the inrush current and short-circuit current. The training results presented in this paper show that wavelet based discrimination method is efficient with good performance and reliability.","PeriodicalId":330989,"journal":{"name":"PowerCon 2000. 2000 International Conference on Power System Technology. The concept is based on a distributed database and on a central system definition, which describes the entire setup. A system definition language is proposed, where all aspects of data such as location within the system, permission of access, interfaces, statistical and economical evaluation, storage and visualization can be defined. The system definition language is hierarchical and object oriented. This nonlinear, time-invariant model is expressed in terms of dynamic symmetric components, and it is validated on a benchmark power system example taken from the literature. The model is evaluated via simulations in unbalanced operation and during unbalanced (one phase to ground) faults. The arrangement rules of measuring electrodes for the grounding resistance measurement of grounding system in vertical-layered soil were analyzed by numerical method. The demanded correct site for the potential rod under different directions is obtained when the grounding system is arranged in different soil model. The proposed method considers practical measurements in distribution systems and assumes that absolute values of voltage and current can be measured at the secondary side buses of substations (S/Ss) and RTUs (remote terminal units) in distribution systems. The method can estimate load and distributed generation output values at each node considering nonlinear characteristics of the practical equipment in distribution systems. The feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated and compared with the original PSO on practical distribution system models. In this paper, digital testing is applied to determine the critical line length, i.e. the short-line fault percentage that stresses the circuit breaker most, for three different circuit breakers. Three arc models have been used for the calculations and three indicators have been applied to determine the stress on the breaker. This is achieved by replacing the rectangular conductors in the traditional stator winding with circular conductors based on proven high voltage cable technology with solid extruded dielectric. The new machine is designed for both hydro and thermal applications. The concept with cables, as stator winding, requires new techniques in the design and assembly process. This paper discusses the concept of Powerformer and the assembling process that has been developed for the following two cases: Eskilstuna rated 42 MVA at 136 kV, which will be used in a thermal application and was assembled in the workshop, and Porsi rated 75 MVA at 155 kV for a hydropower application and assembled at site. Diesel engines are widely used as the backup sources in power plants. However, the existence of a nonlinear, time varying dead time between the fuel injection and the production of the mechanical torque makes the speed control of the diesel prime mover a serious problem. By considering the time delay in the design procedure, the diesel prime mover with the H/sub /spl infin// controller can withstand large variation in the engine dead time. The principles and the PWM control strategy are introduced. The range of the stator pole arc factor and the rotor pole arc factor of the motor are analyzed in the linear region. The optimum range of the stator pole arc factor and the optimum range of the turn-off angle of the main switches in the power converter are given with the 2-D finite element electromagnetic field calculation of the motor and the nonlinear simulation. The transfer function of the filter output voltage to the load current is described with the capacitor value and the system time constant considering the system controller. By using the closed form of the relation between the filter capacitor value and the system time constant, the capacitor value can be calculated with the given system time constant and vice versa. It is more practical for the implementation of power and control circuit of inverter. And, as the effect of the load current to the voltage distortion can be calculated from the closed form, it is possible to analyze the system in how much the voltage waveform is distorted in case of the nonlinear load.
