In all market places (day-ahead, intra-day and real-time) accurate price prediction is needed to generate optimal bids and maximize the profit. This paper first presents three methods for forecasting day-ahead market prices, namely Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heterosedastic (GARCH), Holt-Winter (HW) and Mean Reversion and Jump Diffusion (MRJD). These methods are based on three broad methodologies of time series analysis, exponential-smoothing and stochastic processes. The dynamics of hourly prices in day-ahead market are varying from day to day. Each forecasting tool is suitable to capture one type of price dynamics. To capture this phenomenon, we combine GARCH, HW and MRJD methods using proposed Markov switch. The proposed Markov model is tested using Nordic day-ahead prices.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126503614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper reviews a collection of possible cyber threat scenarios as well as outlines of counter measures to different aspects of the communication infrastructure and components of a future power grid. These scenarios aim to define a test framework to future solutions for resilient distribution grid operation. To allow the evaluation of the effects of possible counter measures to these threats a specialised test environment is presented.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124625659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, storage and demand response solutions have reached the market, which provides flexibility and thereby facilitates intelligent energy management. It has been suggested that this bottom-up flexibility should contribute to the balancing of the future smart grid, but financial incentives have so far been elusive. This article presents computations that assess the profitability of intelligent energy management for three different value propositions: increasing self-sufficiency under typical retail tariffs, or participating in ahead or balancing market price fluctuations, specifically in the Netherlands, Germany and Italy. First, an upper bound valuation of flexibility is computed from 2013 market data. Second, a technology-neutral profit analysis is proposed and demonstrated on selected technologies. Our simulations indicate the highest value for flexibility in the Dutch and German imbalance markets (7.7 & 9.4 €c/kWh) and the Dutch reserve market (10.4 €c/kWh), and for small prosumers in the German and Italian retail markets (12 & 10 €c/kWh). Results indicate that demand response with sufficiently low activation costs can be valorized in electricity markets, which innovative tariffs can exploit for balancing of the future smart grid.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"7 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116448210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared to existing works regarding MPC volt var control, the proposed algorithm controls not only the MV voltages but also the reactive power exchange at the distribution and transmission systems interface. Control of reactive power exchange is a new requirement of the European Network Code on Demand and Connection. The controller adjusts the reactive power of the distributed generators and the voltage reference of HV/MV on load tap changers and capacitor banks. This method was simulated on a 20 kV network taking into account actual technical limitations of distribution networks.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"120 1-2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133192257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To fairly distribute the demand for FCEV power among cars, a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) power scheduling mechanism is implemented using as a criterion the number of times every car has been started up for power generation. It can be concluded that with the fair scheduling mechanism the system can be self sufficient most of the months. At the end of a year, this results in a bell-shaped distribution of the number of start-ups per car and in using, on average, each FCEV about three times per week.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134485765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New technologies like smart inverters developed within EU FP7 project INCREASE have been developed in order to help the Distribution System Operators (DSO) in keeping the network parameters within the operational limits. On the transmission level standard Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) have been in use for years in order to assess the benefits and the added value of new controls and technologies. Due to the different network characteristic of the LV distribution networks and different control problems to be solved, those KPIs are inadequate to assess the impact of new technologies in distribution network. In the paper, a set of modified KPIs for assessing the impact of newly developed controls in the LV distribution network are presented, as developed in the INCREASE project.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134353677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Summary of the most common data mining methods used in power system studies is also given, followed by a comparative analysis. A use case is shown at the end in order to present some examples of extraction of useful information from raw data stored in a real distribution utility's database. This was done by using some of the basic data mining methods applied to different types of attributes describing distribution system feeders in 11 kV and 6.6 kV network. The initial results showed that the usefulness of information depends on the level of data aggregation, as well as the choice of data analytics method.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132235436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The lack of large scale energy storage makes the grid unstable and fragile. In smart energy systems, power flow is regulated by pricing signals enabled through the communication component of the smart grid. This paper presents a leaky bucket approach that uses anticipatory control for power flow management in smart energy systems. The leaky bucket determines the flow rate with respect to a node of the power grid by taking into account the current state of the grid as well as current and anticipated electricity prices. The overall goal is to optimize power system performance and minimize the electricity consumption cost to the customers connected to a node. The proposed approach is tested on data obtained by the Gridlab-D simulation platform. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the leaky bucket approach using anticipatory control in managing power flow and reducing overall cost to the consumer.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114523556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, the model of a DC microgrid is reviewed, and then the proposed control method is presented. This method is composed of two compensation terms that are introduced in the secondary control level in the hierarchical control framework of the microgrids. These compensation terms are used to control the voltage throughout the cluster, and also to equalize the SOCs over the cluster. Even though this method is proposed as a centralized controller, it is shown that it is possible to implement it in a decentralized manner, using a consensus algorithm to estimate the average state of charge locally. Moreover, a modification is proposed that gets the reference SOCs from the tertiary control level, and tries to control storage units based on these references. Simulations ae carried out and the results are provided. These results show the effectiveness of the proposed methods and modifications.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114993686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method is known for its robustness and is suitable for analyses of HV and MV networks. On the other hand it is less appropriate to model LV networks using solely deterministic methods, since consumption in LV networks is far from being deterministic. In contrary it is highly stochastic. Therefore modeling of LV distribution network should involve combination of deterministic and stochastic methods. Stochastic part must be supported with databases containing suitable amount of accurate data of interest.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"468 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114585371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
