Based on web of cells (WoC) architecture proposed by European Liaison on Electricity Committed Towards longer-term Research Activity Integrated Research Programme (ELECTRA IRP), a distributed MAS with distributed negotiation ability for future distributed control (including frequency management and voltage control) is proposed. Each cell is designed as an intelligent agent and is investigated in case studies with constraints, where each agent can only communicate with its neighbouring agents. The interaction logic among agents is according to the distributed negotiation algorithm under consideration by the authors. Simulation results indicate that the WoC architecture could negotiate resources in a distributed manner and achieve successful exchange of resources by coordinating distributed agents. Moreover, the prototype reported in this paper can be extended further for future grids' distributed control regimes. The option of MAS to be exploited for the support of the development and integration of novel power system concepts is explored.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127578745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, if such programs significantly downgrade comfort of consumers, they can choose to opt them out. This impedes the DSM implementation in practice and declines the efficiency of DSM in overall. Finding ways how consumers can reduce their money expenses with least impact to their comfort is thus desirable. This paper focuses on tank electric water heaters (WHs) under double-price tariffs as a case of energy storage devices under simplified variable pricing. We investigate whether or not the WH load shifting can bring money savings while maintaining the user comfort based on the introduced expenses-comfort balancing approach. The proposed approach is based on day-night energy rates and the energy-comfort model suggested earlier. The refined energy model constitutes the first contribution of this paper. As the second contribution, we reformulate the energy-comfort balancing problem into the problem of ‘expenses-comfort balancing’. By simulating diverse hot water usage we show that the proposed mechanism can enable monetary savings without significant drop of comfort. Specifically, the customers can reach up to 20% of daily money savings compared to the regular operation of the heater during weekdays. The reported research can be of interest to utilities that focus on improving consumer uptake of DSM.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125474852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is crucial to thoroughly validate and test future power system control concepts before deployment. In this paper, a Controller Hardware in the Loop (CHIL) simulation for a real-time distributed control algorithm concept developed within the ELECTRA IRP project is performed. CHIL allows exploration of many real-world issues such as noise, randomness of event timings, and hardware design issues that are often not present on a simulation-only system. Octave has been used as the programming language of the controller in order to facilitate the transition between software simulation and real-time control testing. The distributed controller achieved frequency restoration with a collaborative response between different controllers very fast after the unbalanced area is located.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124961982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reduced inertia allows a faster and larger frequency deviation after a disturbance and the reduction in inertia in GB will be significant enough in the next decade that the existing frequency control will be too slow to contain the frequency deviation after a large disturbance. Therefore, delivering fast, coordinated frequency control from new service providers, e.g. energy storage, (termed \"smart frequency control\") will be vital to overcoming the challenge posed by reduced/variable inertia in GB. This paper describes some of the challenges that must be overcome when delivering this form of control, in terms of controller design and the definition of a new ancillary service, alongside simulation results for a 36 zone equivalent model of the GB frequency response that illustrate these challenges and the threats posed by reduced inertia.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127771135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each service is characterised by duration, capacity and effort, with associated prices. We show that the effort of stalling, measurable in kWh2, is a significant cost component for balancing through storage and demand response (DR). In future energy systems — with increased reliance on renewable generation — storage and DR resources are expected to become an important component of power system flexibility and balancing. Existing resource allocation mechanisms are mainly based on pricing in kW (for ramping) and in kWh (for load). Simulations demonstrate that conventional pricing mechanisms yield inefficient allocations of storage and DR resources for power balancing. In contrast, we show that introducing an additional pricing component in e/kWh2 (for stalling) improves the allocation efficiency.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115359889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we have presented a method to determine the economic benefits obtained by residential customers who can freely purchase and sell electricity from an open electricity market, when PV panels are installed on their rooftops with and without support from electrical storage. By using our method, the number of PV panels that can be optimally installed on rooftops for maximum economic benefits can be determined. Further, since PV costs are expected to decrease over the next decade, we have extended the methodology to model progressive piecemeal installations of PV panels over many years. We applied our methodology to the case of a Finnish customer participating in the Nordic electricity market. Although installing PV panels is not beneficial for Finnish residential customers today considering the current LCOE prices, customers obtain long-term benefits from using PV panels, and these benefits improve with the inclusion of batteries.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117161393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This development poses the question how transmission grids' reactive power demand for voltage management, covered by central power plants today, can be supplied in the future. In this work, we estimate the future technical potential of such an approach for the whole of Germany. For a 100% renewable electricity scenario we set the possible reactive power supply in comparison with the reactive power requirements that are needed to realize the simulated future transmission grid power flows. Since an exact calculation of distribution grids' reactive power potential is difficult due to the unavailability of detailed grid models on such scale, we optimistically estimate the potential by assuming a scaled, averaged distribution grid model connected to each of the transmission grid nodes. We find that for all except a few transmission grid nodes, the required reactive power can be fully supplied from the modelled distribution grids. This implies that — even if our estimate is overly optimistic — distributed reactive power provisioning will be a technical solution for many future reactive power challenges.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127314912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The synchronized observation of frequency change arrival times, which represent an electromechanical disturbance propagation, allows to approximate the disturbance location and thereby to support a reliable power system operation. For the verification and further development of this method a post analysis of three incidents of last years in the Continental Europe synchronous area (CESA) power system is done using two different numerical methods to solve the set of triangulation equations. The calculated deviations of estimated to real locations show on the one hand a relative good approximation to the real incident locations, but also a high dependency on the assumed electromechanical disturbance propagation speed and the chosen parameters of signal processing. Nevertheless, the method seems to be promising for future applications and is worth to be further developed.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115544478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
