This paper addresses one of the issues associated to power quality in electrical networks: voltage flicker. The main contribution of the paper fall in the proposal of a methodology for addressing the location in the network and the sizing of an active filter for flicker filtering. The designed active filter is based on controllable and bidirectional power electronics. Also, it includes energy storage capability, so as to maximize flicker filtering effectiveness by performing both active and reactive power regulation.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126741016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electricity storage plants can provide flexibility to the energy system and the development of new, efficient and economical energy storage technologies is of great importance. In this paper, the use of compressed air energy storage plants in the German electricity market is simulated and a sensitivity analysis is carried out. The optimization of the system is done to minimize at each time step the total system costs. The analysis shows the influence of storage plant parameters such as efficiency, storage capacity and natural gas usage on the dispatch and operation hours. It is performed over one year and for three different future scenarios. The results indicate that utilization of storage plants will increase in each scenario considered from 2025 to 2035 but remains in most cases significantly below the maximum capacity of 3000 h/a power generation. While the operation of storage plants lowers the total electricity cost, earnings per plant and profits are not necessarily positive: the wholesale price signals do not create enough revenues to justify the investment in CAES plants.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126922302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Identification of such lines in a meshed multi-compensated power network is not possible through mere topological inspection. The paper presents a methodology for identifying Critical lines that may be hidden in meshed networks and can be used by the System Operator to raise EMS alarms against SSR threats in case of planned or unplanned outages. The paper also describes how Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS) can be used to provide an economical alternative to existing SSR mitigation techniques by making best use of existing WAMS assets and minimizing further investment. To provide visibility of torsional oscillations (4–46 Hz), the paper describes a new Waveform Measurement Unit (WMU) that offers this additional functionality using a software update of a contemporary PMU, which is being trialed for the first time as part of the GB VISOR project. The potential opportunity and challenges of using WAMS for SSR mitigation is studied using the IEEE FBM. The methodology for identifying Critical lines and generators is demonstrated using the IEEE 68 bus model.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126199540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The distributed architecture utilizes an asynchronous message oriented middleware to integrate the defined components. The application adopts a distributed demand response optimization algorithm for the validation of the presented architecture. The algorithm aims to optimize the charging schedule of the consumers' energy storage devices in order to minimize the energy acquisition cost while maintaining a level of elasticity in the schedules. By means of simulations, it is validated that the distributed architecture is capable of performing optimized automated demand response.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126471573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper gives insights into the communication between Mosaik and several simulation tools and explains its realization. A interface for DIgSILENT PowerFactory and Matlab is implemented. The source code is made available for further implementation by other researchers. A case study demonstrates the usability of the co-simulation framework and illustrates the diversity of its capabilities. A residential low voltage grid is implemented in PowerFactory. The data for the loads are generated by several load curve simulation tools. The load data depends on the grid state and therefore a recursive procedure has to be implemented. Doing such simulations manually requires the tedious data adjustment and transfer between the simulation tools. With Mosaik the whole process is much faster, but also the error rate can be minimized by the automation.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127089121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, the amount of available PQ data is also growing very fast. These data contain a lot of valuable information about the behavior of PQ, but up to now it is in the most cases used only to assess compliance with limits (e.g. EN 50160 in Europe). Beside long-term characteristics (trends) and medium-term characteristics (seasonal effects) in particular the analysis of short-term characteristics can provide useful information about deviations from a \"typical\" behavior, which are usually caused by significant changes in the customer or network behavior (e.g. connection of new disturbing equipment). As manual screening of the data is not feasible, automated methods to identify such \"anomalies\" are required. After a short description of typical variations in PQ datasets the paper classifies different types of anomalies in PQ time series and presents a new method in order to identify them. Finally, the performance of the method is discussed based on examples.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131306658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to this well-studied occurrence, we report here on the emergence of novel synchronized behaviors of thermostatically-controlled electric heating systems in buildings with good thermal insulation and important solar radiation gains without DSM. To suppress the resulting large load fluctuations on the distribution grid we propose a centralized DSM algorithm that smoothens the total load curve — including electric heating and all other domestic appliances — of the cluster of dwellings it pilots. Setting up the baseline load is based on weather forecasts for a receding time-horizon covering the next 24 hours, while control actions are based on a priority list which is constructed from the current status of the dwellings. We show numerically that our DSM control scheme can be generically used to modify load curves of domestic households to achieve diverse goals such as minimizing electricity costs, peak shaving and valley filling.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134118165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The input data was generated by continuous measurements in the resolution of one second over the period of one year. The identified parameters are clustered by different times of the day and weekdays. The found parameters are finally compared to parameters in the literature. Further research steps are discussed by presenting a combined approach for determining a ZIP model based on an exponential model. A future goal will be the usage of measurements currently available by smart metering applications which is discussed in the paper.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134184127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary motive of defensive islanding is to limit the affected areas to maintain the stability of the resulting subsystems and to reduce the total loss of load in the system. The slow coherency based islanding can successfully be applied for the defensive islanding. In this paper, two partitioning methods are proposed, K-means clustering algorithm and fuzzy relational eigenvector centrality-based clustering algorithm. The proposed methods are using the data measured by phasor measurement units to determine the islands to be used in the defensive islanding. The proposed methods are demonstrated on the 16-generator 68-bus power system and their performances are discussed as their results are compared.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"5 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131831925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new generation installed at the consumer premises may induce voltage problems while the loading of the cables is still under nominal values. Conventionally possible resulting voltage violations are solved by reinforcing the network, however smart grid alternatives like voltage control in the LV network can also alleviate the network problems. LV-networks are traditionally designed with medium to low voltage transformers equipped with off-line tap changers. The addition of an on-load tap changer (OLTC) for voltage control can decrease the voltage violations in the network, however this needs to be considered within the optimisation method applied for the planning of the LV-network. In this paper the smart grid alternative of installing an OLTC in this optimisation has been performed. By assessing different OLTC control strategies under conditions with increasing distributed generation over many types of networks, the effectiveness of the OLTC becomes apparent. The OLTC is included in the optimization problem formulation by the introduction of additional voltage constraints and relaxing the constraints in the form of a penalty function. When the introduction of an OLTC is more efficient rather than the conventional strengthening of the network is demonstrated with a case study on the impacts of distributed generation.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122855573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
