The SRG project is focused on DSO's capabilities to increase the interoperability, resilience, efficiency and robustness of the existing rural distribution network by the utilization of new Smart Grid technologies. This project is founded by the European Union and it is constituted by an eight partners consortium mixing their know-how in a hybrid smart solution; therefore, power electronics, control theory, telecommunications, distribution system operator energy managing, supervisory systems and end-users coexist in a pilot network. This pilot network includes four rural secondary substations up to 200 kVA interconnected by means of medium voltage rural overhead lines in Vallfogona, Catalonia, Spain.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115158147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DSF has the potential to improve the overall efficiency of the energy system while maintaining high reliability standards. With the help of the existing market players, DSF could be efficiently managed to offer alternative and feasible solutions to the current grid operational congestions. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed that assesses the possible solutions for congestion management using flexibility services while considering the effect of energy payback. A real distribution network is used and new flexibility bids and payback conditions are proposed. Finally, the total cost that the DSO will be charged due to these services is calculated for the scenarios considered.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115171437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a Severity Risk Index (SRI) that with the support of smart grid technologies (e.g., real-time monitoring) is capable of providing an indication of the evolving risk of power systems subject to HILP events in a smart and adaptive way, thus potentially contributing to effective decision-making to mitigate such risk. Specific applications considered here refer to windstorm events, for which purpose the proposed SRI is embedded in a Sequential Monte Carlo simulation for capturing the spatiotemporal effects of windstorms passing across transmission networks. Latin Hypercube Sampling and backward scenario reduction method are used to produce a computationally tractable number of representative scenarios for SRI computation. The IEEE 24-bus reliability test system is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SRI.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124935784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In case of severe contingencies, conventional OPF methods may fail to converge, i.e. find solution satisfying all constraints. In such cases, network operators/planners should identify critical constraints, indicating network buses and lines that require reinforcing, or where further controls should be implemented (e.g. demand side management or load shedding). Repeated constraint relaxation in conventional OPF methods might not be a viable approach to identify critical constraints. This paper presents an alternative method, based on a meta-heuristic algorithm and injection sensitivity factors, to, first, identify critical constraints, and, second, manage constraints through a coordinated generation and demand control actions. Practical aspects of the presented approach are illustrated using IEEE 30-bus network as an example.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123033521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A two-stage optimization methodology is developed, where the first stage solves the investment problem and the second stage focuses on the operational aspects. The novelty of the proposed investment methodology is explicit incorporation of network contingency constraints within the optimization formulation, while taking into consideration multiple operating regimes that are characterized with changing load and generation profiles. Connection of new distributed generation units and new types of demands, construction of circuits on new corridors, reinforcement of existing circuits, switchgears relocation and optimal network reconfiguration, as well as different restoration rules are also included in the model. The highly complex mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problem model is solved using a dedicated commercial optimization software package. IEEE 33 bus medium-voltage test system that is operated radially is used to validate the proposed methodology. Additionally, sensitivity analyses are conducted to determine a few critical planning parameters affecting the development and performance of medium voltage distribution networks.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125095982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although a decently large volume of papers on this topic has come out, only a small percentage of them try to simulate real-world scenarios when estimating the line parameters. As a result, the developed algorithms might be of little practical utility. This paper describes a novel approach for single-circuit transmission line parameter estimation based on synchrophasor measurements. Both systematic and random measurement errors are taken into consideration. The technique is verified by numerous simulations built around current and voltage synchrophasor data sourced from phasor measurement units. A general nonuniform transmission line is considered as well. Some encouraging results have been obtained, and possible ways of improving the effectiveness of the algorithm are suggested.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129544320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Future power systems will be highly interconnected and complex with a variety of uncertain parameters such as the injection of intermittent renewable energy resources, the adoption of flexible hierarchical control structures and the appearance of new types of loads. Identifying and ranking the uncertain parameters are important in future power system operations since they can provide referable indexes for system operators to achieve better system management with less monitoring. This paper presents the probabilistic method for the identification and ranking of critical uncertain parameters. A modified version of the 68 bus NETS-NYPS test system is used in this study for simulation studies. The effects of uncertain parameters are modelled with Monte-Carlo method in the environments of MATLAB and DIgSILENT PowerFactory. The performances of the ‘nose-point area’ of P-V Curves for system load buses are used as indexes when evaluating their sensibility for specific uncertainties.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129745399","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of the extent of land occupied by these PVPPs, the solar radiation along the plant is different. This situation causes several problems into the grid. Thus, the objective of this paper is to analyse the effect of a 6 MW PVPP at the point of common coupling considering different ambient conditions for each array. Three study cases are analysed considering temperatures of 10 °C, 30 °C and 40 ° C. In all the cases, the solar radiation is different in each array. The simulation and the results are conducted to understand the impact of ambient conditions in voltage, frequency and active power at the point of common coupling in a weak grid.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124533844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in most cases investment costs for installing storage solutions far outweigh the cost for infrastructure upgrades. Our research shows that combining demand side management and storage techniques can prove effective in reducing the total investment costs in certain cases while increasing these costs in other cases. In this work we qualify when demand side management can prove beneficial to the total investment cost of deploying ANM techniques and we quantify the amount of cost decrease DSM can offer. We present cost models for storage and DSM and describe ANM resource allocation techniques while considering real world regulatory constraints.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127235914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
