This paper explores the planning of devices with minimal runtime constraints and constraints on total cumulative production (e.g., buffer level), such as heat pumps and electric vehicles. For such devices, a novel dynamic programming formulation is presented that makes it possible to find the optimal planning in O(N2) time and space, where N is the number of time intervals. To evaluate the algorithm, we integrate it into an existing decentralized demand side management approach. This evaluation shows using simulations that a load curve within a neighborhood can be flattened this way.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130921747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The limitations of the classical direct voltage droop control strategy are discussed and mainly the difficulty to reach power reference set-points is stressed. In that context, a knowledge based intelligent controller (namely Fuzzy) is proposed. It is capable of addressing these weaknesses by combining the advantages of the droop controller such as robustness and exceptional ability to compensate for imbalance during contingencies, and the constant active power controller which has the ability to easily reach power set points. In this context, the power dispatch of the HVDC grid converters is achieved without the need to solve before-hand HVDC grid load flow equations where the droop constant is included in the algorithm. The advantages of the new Fuzzy controller is the reduced computational effort, the high degree of flexibility, and the zero percentage error. The efficacy and robustness of the control strategy is demonstrated by means of time domain simulations for a three terminal voltage source converter based offshore HVDC grid system used for the grid connection of large offshore wind power plants.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131302769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to calculate and analyze the SCN traffic flow efficiently, this paper proposes a traffic-flow distribution analytical model, where the transmission process of traffic flow in a branch is described as the mapping relationship between the input node and output node. Based on this mapping relationship, the transmission path of traffic flow and the topology structure of information communication network can be described. In addition, the fault event analytical model of communication network is presented to depict the possible fault scenarios in the traffic-flow transmission process. Furthermore, a stochastic network calculus theory is employed to construct the architecture of the end-to-end delay analysis of traffic-flow transmission, and is used to evaluate the traffic-flow transmission performance in SCN. In the scenarios, by comparing the related mathematical calculation which is developed by classical network performance analysis software OPNET (Optimized Network Engineering Tool) as well as the model and performance analytical method proposed in this paper, the rationality of the traffic-flow distribution analytical model is verified and the effectiveness of proposed performance analytical method is confirmed.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126067008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The control strategy is layered in a two-stage procedure: day-ahead and intra-day operation. During day-ahead operation, the load leveled power consumption profile is determined by applying a scenario-based robust optimization using historical measurements of the aggregated feeder power consumption. In the intra-day phase, the operation of the group of prosumers is dispatched according to the profile defined during the day-ahead stage, which becomes the so-called dispatch plan. The dispatch plan is tracked in real-time by properly adjusting the injections of the BESS using model predictive control (MPC). The proposed control process is experimentally validated using a 750 kW/567 kWh BESS connected to a 20 kV feeder of the EPFL campus that interfaces loads and PV generation.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"21 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114096909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scalable solutions will be required to enable fast and reliable control during demand response. While management solutions have been proposed they do not focus on the scalability issues of the processing system. Handling continuous and variable Big Data streams can easily saturate existing systems. In this paper we propose a scalable cloud based architecture and prototype system for handling smart home data flows. The system can support near real time decisions for 10,000 customers each having 10 sensors with only 35 commodity machines running free cloud software. The platform is automated and can be used to directly control the customers' smart home or to send recommendations. Some initial experiments are performed to show the benefits of smart recommendations.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"10 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114107557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However it is observed that these profiles are not adapted to the current evolution of the power system in which consumers and distributed generation sources play a central role. Indeed standard load profiles are constructed statistically, using historical data, so their accuracy is directly related to the level of aggregation. Such profiles are representative for groups of 100 customers at least, thus they are not adapted to low voltage networks which contain small number of customers. Distribution system operators and other stakeholders are in need of appropriate models to represent a realistic load and generation behavior in many fields, such as home energy systems or local balancing mechanism. This paper provides a smart meter data based methodology to generate composite standard load profiles which more accurately matches the real load profiles from smart meters. The methodology provides a best standard load profile match for each day in the year. Best standard load profile matches are used to create the composite standard load profiles for one year. This methodology has been validated using the data-set from DG DemoNet Smart LV Grid project.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131174011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cost of the wind farm infrastructure is a minor part of the total cost. However, its variability with different layouts influences the optimal layout of the wind farm. The aim of this paper is to develop a realistic model for the wind farm infrastructure and propose a fast algorithm for solving the problem. First, the road layout is found using the Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm, considering the existing roads. After that, the collector system is optimized using metaheuristic Cuckoo Search algorithm, taking into account information about previously found road layout and the lifetime costs of the cables, power losses and outages. A Genetic algorithm is used as a benchmark for comparing the performance of the Cuckoo Search algorithm.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"251 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133550116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This communication solution is dedicated to one community-wide Demand-Response application designed for a residential area near an industrial installation in Sweden. The community-wide Demand-Response application will be briefly explained in the paper, however, the main focus of this paper is the communication solution and IT system implementation for this application. The communication solution is realized by the unconventional use of IEC 61850 standard, and implemented in a hierarchical structure consisting of SCADA, communication gateway and low cost micro processor-based spatial heating controllers.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115718589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Demand-side management (DSM) is often seen as a potential technology to counter-act this increasing stress on the (distribution) grid. An important and expensive asset within these grids are the power transformers. Thus, economic incentives for DSM can be obtained by decreasing transformer ageing. To study the potential of using DSM to decrease transformer ageing, we consider an ageing model of distribution transformers based on the load profile being supplied by the transformer. We combine this with an optimization problem to find optimal charging profiles of EVs w.r.t. transformer ageing. Furthermore, we compare the results of the optimization problem to three other charging strategies. We conclude that smart charging strategies can give improvements of up to two orders of magnitude in reducing the ageing incurred by EV charging over the base load. Furthermore, we show that for the considered scenarios, a DSM strategy that steers towards the flattening of a neighbourhood's load profile gives similar results to our approach, which directly optimizes transformer lifetime.","PeriodicalId":330869,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114725566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
