The quality of the product is reduced by film profile variations, which are caused by changes in the casting drum speed, resulting from: forces transmitted through the film, mechanical imbalance of the drum, backlash in gearboxes, and torque ripple from the electric drives. Techniques for counteracting film-transmitted forces are described and tested using a laboratory facility, which replicates the behaviour of a production plant. It is shown that system modelling must include the effects of creep and slip between the drive belt and pulleys. Using the system model in speed and load torque observers allows the development of new controllers, which improve speed holding capability by a factor of 10.","PeriodicalId":330283,"journal":{"name":"Industrial Electronics, 2002. Nevertheless, weight, space and cost savings, besides structural simplifications, could be achieved by employing actuators able to simultaneously manage more freedom degrees. This paper proposes a novel rotary-linear 4-phase permanent magnets brushless motor. The machine structure and its basic principles are first described, obtaining then an approximated analytical model by means of a simplified electromagnetic anal based on the equivalent magnetic circuit approach. The machine regulation is then examined, demonstrating the ideal possibility to achieve a fully decoupled control of the electromagnetic force and torque, joined to the suppression of the potentially correlated ripple phenomena, by adopting a suitable yet simple supply logic. Several theoretical waveforms are finally reported.","PeriodicalId":330283,"journal":{"name":"Industrial Electronics, 2002. ISIE 2002. It shows that the time-delay, in electrical rotor position estimation, does not influence the vector control when the d- and q-axis current components are accurately estimated. The PI controllers, fed by the actual d-and q-axis current errors, generate the correct voltage references in the estimated rotor reference frame. As a consequence, the coordinate transformation needs the estimated rotor position with no correction. To obtain accurate estimates of the d- and q-axis current components, it is sufficient that the estimated EMF and current space vectors have the same delay as to the actual ones. An adaptive sliding-mode observer, with chattering-noise low-pass filter, is used to estimate the EMF space vector, and a similar low-pass filter to delay the current space vector. The rotor speed and position are obtained from the estimated EMF space vector and its derivative. Simulation results are presented to prove the effectiveness of the new approach to sensorless vector control.","PeriodicalId":330283,"journal":{"name":"Industrial Electronics, 2002. ISIE 2002. The characteristics of the MOSFETs have a major impact on the whole performances of the drive system. The used devices are out of the traditional cell-structure MOSFETs, and they present interesting characteristics due to the advanced design rules typical of the VLSI processes. These MOSFETs can carry current up to 150 A, with a breakdown voltage in the range 20 V-50 V. The paper starts with the description of some technological issues. In particular, the paper focuses on the innovations and the improved performances in comparison to those of standard devices. Laboratory tests are carried out aiming to characterize the device looking for the specific application in a full bridge inverter. Finally, considerations and design criteria, in order to reduce the total power losses in the actual AC motor drive for wheelchair applications, are presented.","PeriodicalId":330283,"journal":{"name":"Industrial Electronics, 2002. Charge control is a kind of current-mode control, in which the integral of the inductor current in the on state of each switching cycle reaches a reference value. This value is the feedback output signal of a pole placement block, which fixes the poles of the output-voltage. Firstly, a charge controller is designed for a single DC-DC converter in order to show the benefits of this technique. Although the controller introduces a nonlinearity, the close-loop system output-voltage is near-linear under some conditions. The controller is studied for two different power distributed schemes: master-slave and democratic approaches. This control technique provides the following performances: tight output voltage regulation, robustness against external disturbances, and uniform distributed current sharing among modules. Besides, a fixed-frequency operation is achieved, being useful for active ripple cancellation methods, as the interleaving technique. On the other hand, the controller response against load current and line voltage step changes within one switching-cycle. The features of the proposed control scheme are verified through simulation results, confirming the theoretical analysis done.","PeriodicalId":330283,"journal":{"name":"Industrial Electronics, 2002. Supporting them over alumina substrates provided with gold interdigitated contacts, gas sensor devices in a layered configuration have been obtained. The sensor electrical response to CO and humidity in air was evaluated. Furthermore, an impedance spectroscopy characterization over the whole 0-100% RH humidity range was carried out. The results have been employed to extract accurate circuit models of the sensing films. Since each element of the equivalent circuit has a direct and univocal relationship with the different parts of the physical structure, such models have shown to be a basic tool for a deeper knowledge of the sensor performance by relating structural to electrical properties. In addition, their implementation gives useful indications on the changes that can be made to improve the sensor response. In the paper, the performance of the sensors and the most interesting results of the model simulation are presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":330283,"journal":{"name":"Industrial Electronics, 2002.
