In the quest to thrive in the global marketplace, the leadership of the UAE have prioritized the education as the key to social and economic prosperity and full employment of Emirati youth in the knowledge-economy an overriding goal of the national vision. Therefore, English, the new commercial Lingua Franca, is the language of instruction in all federally funded educational institutions and most locally funded and private post-secondary educational institutions. Recent literature set in western contexts such as the United States, Europe, and Australia, found that students studying in their non-native languages faced learning challenges that reduced engagement and contributed to poor performance. In the western contests, students studying in their non-native language came mainly from immigrant or second generation immigrant families or are indigenous people with their own indigenous language who were taught in schools established by the English speaking citizenry. In the UAE, the most UAE national students study at the primary and secondary level in their native Arabic language. Of those that proceed on to tertiary education, most study in English taught mostly by English speaking teachers residing as expats in the country. This study examined the perceptions of engineering students and their instructors about ways in which studying in a non-native language affects learning and engagement in the context of the UAE. The study administered surveys to students and their teachers listing the most common reasons for disengagement of learners studying their non-native language gleaned from educational literature. Student responses and instructor responses were analyzed separately then compared to each other. Each survey contained an open ended question requesting suggestions from both students and instructors on how to improve the quality of learning. The findings indicated that students and faculty perceptions were similar with the main reasons for engagement identified by both as practical and interactive lessons, discussions and activities to perform in class, and ability of students to form groups to work together in the learning processes. Teachers identified highly theoretical content and students using mobile devices for non-academic activities as being disengaging while students indicated that boring teachers were disengaging. A trend surfaced indicating that faculty teaching in the system longer indicated that language proficiency is a factor for engagement or disengagement.","PeriodicalId":328866,"journal":{"name":"2018 Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences (ASET)","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124607855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Repeated exposure to this severe loading condition can induce damage in the composite rotor blades. These blades are generally made of fiber reinforced laminated composites and exhibit various competing modes of damage such as delamination, fiber matrix debonding, fiber breakage, fiber pull out and matrix cracking. There is a need to study the behavior of the composite helicopter rotor system under various key damage modes in composite materials, as this understanding can then be further used for developing a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system which will be able to predict these key damage modes in the helicopter from the measured data. An experimental study for understanding the combined influence of damages is carried out. Experimental analysis is carried out for non-rotating and rotating conditions. In the non-rotating conditions fundamental properties of composite rotor blade model viz. stiffnesses and natural frequencies in various directions are obtained. For the rotating conditions strains in various directions are measured for damaged and undamaged rotor blade models. Further, dynamic responses of undamaged and damaged blade are also obtained for rotating as well as non-rotating conditions.","PeriodicalId":328866,"journal":{"name":"2018 Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences (ASET)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117054178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since total uplink (UL) traffic of most of these IoT applications is higher than total downlink (DL) traffic, we focus our analysis only on UL performance. It is shown that current commercial 4G LTE systems can't support emerging mission-critical IoT applications with latency requirements of less than 100 ms. 4G LTE systems can satisfy the requirements of IoT applications when latency requirements are > 150 ms.","PeriodicalId":328866,"journal":{"name":"2018 Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences (ASET)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126374162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the professional curriculum design, this is also the integral part of transnational education scenario. The significance of the Blended Learning has increased over the years due to the growing diversity within learning community, location and objectives. In the transnational education scenario, under the UK University system, adopting and encouraging the Blended Learning can be a great initiative for more collaborative learning experience. The presentation will provide a direction on the ways and means of practicing the Blended Learning process at the branch campuses to make the curriculum more locally relevant and internationally adoptable in the long-run.","PeriodicalId":328866,"journal":{"name":"2018 Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences (ASET)","volume":"224 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127184081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses on using specific engineering examples and problems that are taught in other courses within the same semester of the curriculum, as application areas in the course. This technique does not only allow students to apply what they learn various engineering courses within the term, but it gives them a point of reference in understanding fundamental engineering principles all round. Using engineering courses material archives and text books, numerous examples and application problems were reviewed and compiled for five concurrent standard engineering courses of the same curriculum. From this study and analysis, it was evident that several application areas from concurrent courses could be cited and referenced in the teaching of engineering students. Consequently, the student learning experience would be more rewarding since it includes a set of examples and problems that can be solved during lectures and focused on other engineering courses.","PeriodicalId":328866,"journal":{"name":"2018 Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences (ASET)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125228323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are negative environmental impacts associated with those practices, mainly contribution to global warming, eutrophication and odor. Anaerobic digestion is one of the well-established technologies that capture the energy in the waste, including animal waste. In this research, manures from different types of cows typically present in dairy farms were collected and tested for their biochemical methane potential. The test was conducted on five categories of cows, namely: (1) high cows; regularly milked cows, (2) dry cows; pregnant cows, (3) fresh cows; to be milked for the first time after their delivery, (4) young cows (Young-1); cows younger than 18 months, and (5) young cows (Young-2); cows younger than 7 months. Those cows differ in age, weight, digestion/ metabolic processes and feeding diet, which lead to variations in biochemical characteristics, and consequently biogas potential, of the produced manure. The methane yield was found to be highest in the manure of fresh cows (216 L CH4/kg VS), followed by Young-1 (208 L CH4/kg VS), high (196 L CH4/kg VS), dry (160 L CH4/kg VS), and Young-2 (148 L CH4/kg VS) cow manures. The carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins were measured for each manure type to determine their effects on biogas production. Furthermore, those parameters were tested for correlation with the measured biogas production using Kendall's Tau approach. The analysis showed that higher lipid and protein contents lead to lower biogas potential, while higher carbohydrates content resulted in higher biogas production.","PeriodicalId":328866,"journal":{"name":"2018 Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences (ASET)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128496675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation has been used to assess this issue. Materials Studio 7.0 has been used as a tool for finding the modulus and thermal conductivity of nanocomposites. Two different computational models, SLGS/nickel and CNT/nickel composites have been examined to study the effect of nanofiller geometry on Young's modulus and thermal conductivity of these nanocomposites. The effect of nanofiller volume fraction (Vj) on Young's modulus and thermal conductivity has also been studied. Results show that with increase in Vj the Young's modulus as well as thermal conductivity of SLGS/Ni composites increases at a faster rate than for CNT/Ni composite. For same Vj, Young's modulus of SLGS/Ni composite is higher than CNT/Ni composite, showing that SLGS is a better reinforcement than CNT for Ni based composites.","PeriodicalId":328866,"journal":{"name":"2018 Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences (ASET)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133527303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Air pollution with six heavy metals (Copper, Zinc, Nickel, Manganese, iron and Cadmium) from the city of Tabouk City were evaluated by collecting street dust and tree bark samples from residential areas, the city center, and a remote site for results comparison. The results showed that higher air pollution was found at the city center in comparison to the residential areas using tree bark and street dust samples. The abundance of analyzed heavy metals concentration in the descending order for street dust were iron higher than manganese higher than zinc higher than copper higher than nickel higher than cadmium. The city center and residential areas showed similar trends due to the same pollution source which is traffic emission in this case. The concentration of heavy metals in descending order from tree bark samples were iron higher than zinc higher than copper higher than manganese higher than nickel and higher than cadmium reflecting the existence of air pollution for years and at the earlier stages of the tree growth. It can be concluded from this research that the major source of air pollution in the city of Tabouk is majorly due to traffic activities as no major industries are located within the investigated area. Street dust is commonly attributed to the transportation of heavy metals with prevailing wind direction in the study area. The results of heavy metal air pollution found in this study were compared with some other cities around the world. The levels of the metal ion concentrations were generally below the mean concentration values in comparison to the commonly known air polluted cities of the world.","PeriodicalId":328866,"journal":{"name":"2018 Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences (ASET)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134624061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
