It is because of the increasing pressure from the market and the public administration to improve the environmental and social conditions for all. The issue of sustainability is implemented into business and in particular into supply chains as an important element of management. Despite many works regard to the concept of sustainable supply chain there is still a lack of the complex models that will help to understand and identify the current position of the supply chain and give the feedback which actions are expected to be improve to achieve the next level of maturity. The main aim of the paper is an attempt to conceptualize the problem of maturity in supply chain in the context of sustainability. Main aim was to point out activities which determine production’s beginning in convergent production system.In analysis there was an usage of complex systems theory and there were several stages of decomposition into single production streams. In the work there is a presentation of a model which sets the moment of production processes beginning in a production structure which is characterized by high level of processes’ repetitions with different production parameters. There have been done the definitional analysis with examples and characterized wide range of conceptual substitutes. In addition, it was done and shown a real analysis of the wild cards in practical terms in selected areas of modern logistics, such as: 3D printing, augmented reality, Big Data, cloud logistics, Internet of Things, robotics & automation, self-driving vehicles, as drivers of the fourth industrial revolution. The implementation of these concepts requires appropriate tools of cooperation between the all parties, a new way of joining and merging of systems such as: manufacturing, shipping, transport, logistics, sales channels, service, etc. These phenomena are so new and complex, and therefore uncertain that require in-depth prospective analysis. One of them may be the identification and analysis of potential wild cards. The paper present the reasons for the decision that was once made in order to obtain the expected advantages after the modernization. The comparison of the incurred expenses and the profits that might be gained in the future allows us to state that the decision about the modernization was the right one. The decision about the modernization also referred to a trend towards an increase in cargo handling operations, which could be observed at the company at that time. The decision about modernization was made when the terminal operated using its full capacities of the railway siding.
