Power capture is a very important problem in wireless networks. A space-time model, which is more accurate than models in previous analyses, is used to track events in the network. Three capture models, yielding an upper and lower bounds on the throughput, are analyzed. Propagation loss and Rayleigh fading are assumed in capture models. Numerical and simulation results are obtained and discussed for different values of maximum normalized propagation delay and the capture ratio. In particular the authors show that the throughput for the lower bound model is very tight. In addition, they show that fading, combined with propagation loss, improves the network throughput.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. Transition probabilities have been evaluated by using computer simulation and mean acquisition times were determined using a system model. Comparisons of mean acquisition time for six schemes have made. Results indicate that the proposed schemes will achieve much better acquisition time performance than previously reported methods.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. With respect to our earlier results, we include channel coding and frequency-domain interleaving which are necessary for OFDM systems on multipath fading channels characterized by deep notches in the signal spectrum. Our results indicate that a single-carrier system with a frequency-domain equalizer achieves similar performance to coded-OFDM, while alleviating the carrier synchronization and nonlinear distortion problems inherent to this technique.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. The detection circuit is, essentially, an envelope detector followed by an artificial neural network (ANN). The input signals to the ANN are time-delayed versions of the envelope signal of the digitally modulated carrier in the intermediate frequency (IF) range. A trained ANN assigns its actual input signal waveform to the best fitting carrier state. The networks \"winning\" output is latched and triggers the clock-synchronized generation of the corresponding sequence of data bits. As a special case, we describe the architectural design and the performance optimization of a quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) receiver.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. The LEO network is assumed to be seamless and virtual cut-through switching is proposed for use. The virtual cut-through switching technique is used to overlap the message delivery time with the long path setup time, caused by long distance between satellites. Equations to calculate the message delivery time and the probability of a message being delivered successfully using no more than a time delay bound are presented in this paper. Numerical examples are also given in the paper.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. For the study the authors transmitted packets at a fixed rate between two nodes. The question examined is how to determine the correct playout rate and the initial buffering required to ensure a 'good' reception. Two different algorithms to determine the playout rate are proposed and the authors examine their behavior using five different data sets that were collected at different times. The results indicate that the playout rate should be slower (by a fraction) than the packet generation rate and that, surprisingly, the initial prebuffering is irrelevant.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. The distribution of the message lengths is general. The system is analyzed by using an infinite-dimensional state description and a generating-functions approach. An explicit expression is obtained for the probability generating function (pgf) of the queue length and the packet delay. Also, closed-form expressions are derived for the mean and the tail distribution of the queue length and the packet delay. The mean message waiting time is obtained as well. The buffer behavior with train arrivals is compared to that with batch arrivals, where all the packets of a message enter the buffer during the same slot. By means of some numerical examples, the impact of the message-length distribution on the multiplexer performance is investigated.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. The authors have already developed a multiple access scheme called FAWA (fixed assignment based window access) which is able to vary the system behavior from the slotted ALOHA scheme to TDMA scheme. The FAWAC (fixed assignment based window access with capture) scheme is an extension of the FAWA scheme. It is possible to have priorities on transmissions in assigned slots due to capture effect derived by power control. We examine the performance aspects by theoretical analysis and show some numerical examples. Furthermore, we have evaluated usefulness of the capture effect in the satellite channels by experiments using a real satellite and several earth stations.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. The architecture is derived by the application of the relaxed look-ahead technique. This technique is an approximation to the look-ahead technique and results in a minimal hardware overhead. Performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated for NEXT cancellers used in a 125 Mb/s twisted-pair distributed data interface (TPDDI) and the 155 Mb/s asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) local area network (LAN) applications. It is shown that the proposed pipelined architecture can be clocked at a rate of 107 times faster than the serial architecture with a maximum of 2.0 dB loss in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both the TPDDI and the ATM LAN applications.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM.
