The former uses the standardized ATM technology, but takes over the public switch architecture. The latter is evolved from the classical datagram networks. To overcome the disadvantages of both existing concepts and to combine their advantages, this paper presents a new ATM LAN concept which is based on a distributed ATM-switch architecture. In comparison with the centralized ATM-switches the distributed architecture better meets the customer requirements of local area multimedia communications. In comparison with the advanced shared medium access protocols it better supports virtual channel oriented resource and performance management which is essential for future multimedia applications.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. For rerouting to be possible, sufficient spare capacity must exist in the links of the chosen alternate paths. Path restoration results in lower additional cost compared to link restoration. Traffic splitting can be used to further reduce the additional cost. There are several methods of performing traffic splitting. We have chosen to study even-splitting and best-splitting methods. We have evaluated traffic splitting techniques by enhancing the link and path restoration modules of the Restoration Network Planning Tool developed by Alcatel Network Systems. We have observed, through several experiments, that traffic splitting results in significant reduction in the spare capacity and the corresponding augmentation cost.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. Switch architectures based on Batcher-banyan networks are considered the most suitable for constructing large-dimension broadband packet switches. Though the Batcher-banyan network is internally nonblocking, the ubiquitous problem of packet loss resulting from outlet conflict can only be reduced by external buffering. Buffering strategies are basically categorized into two classes: input buffering and output buffering. For input-buffered switches, a phenomenon called head-of-the-line (HOL) blocking limits the maximum throughput to only 58.6 percent (2-/spl radic/2). On the other hand, output buffering achieves much higher throughput, but the entire switch has to be operated at a sufficiently high speed in order to deliver all the packets simultaneously destined for the same outlet. This generally imposes severe implementation problems. We propose a switch architecture with combined input and output queueing. The switch fabric consists of a Batcher sorting network, a radix-r shuffle mapping network, and r parallel distributing modules. The input queues and the switch fabric run at the same speed as the input and output trunks. However, up to r packets may arrive at an output queue in a single time slot. We analyze the throughput-delay characteristics of the proposed switch. The maximum throughput in the case where r=2 is 88.6 percent. For r=4, the proposed switch offers a 99.6 percent maximum throughput. In addition, the proposed switch relieves the HOL blocking by allowing up to r packets to be delivered to the same outlet in one time slot. Consequently, the average delay is also reduced.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. It can store and forward the bursts based on burst bandwidth reservation protocols for applications such as ATM LAN interconnection. The burst-server architecture is characterized through comparison with connectionless server architecture. Performance evaluation results show that burst-servers reduce the intensity of the unfairness for long distance traffic and maximize throughput. The proposed burst-server architecture is necessary for ATM WANs to transfer high speed bursty data efficiently.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. Additional performance measures such as the average consecutive packet loss (the so called \"average packet gap\") must be considered. The authors propose to improve the packet gap performance of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) sessions by minimizing the average packet gap present in the network's buffers. They introduce a simple packet dropping policy that, in steady state, minimizes: (i) the average packet gap, and (ii) the average packet buffering delay, when this delay can be reduced without increasing the average packet gap, or packet loss probability.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. For this purpose, ITU-T Recommendation I.363 defines the SRTS (synchronous residual time stamp) method. The authors implement a DS-3 CLAD (cell assembly and disassembly) device using the SRTS method. The SRTS method generates jitter, which is similar to the destuff jitter experienced in a stuff multiplexing system. Amplitude and spectrum of the SRTS jitter are evaluated using the DS-3 CLAD device. Finally, high speed data transmission is conducted between FDDI-LANs, and high quality NTSC video transmission is achieved using the CLAD device in an ATM field trial.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. Real-world noise-environment is seldom purely Gaussian, yet receiving systems generally are those that are optimal for white Gaussian noise (linear matched filters or correlation detectors). Matched median filters are robust detectors in impulsive noise environments forming a natural counterpart of linear matched filters. In this paper, matched median filters are extended to the demodulation of complex signature sequences assuming asynchronous communication and coherent single-user receivers. Monte Carlo simulations show that matched median filters for PSK codes outperform matched median filters for BPSK codes and linear matched filters for PSK and BPSK codes in the presence of multiple-access interference and impulsive channel noise.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. Adaptive equalizers adapt filter coefficients to cancel the channel response. We study two different frequency domain adaptive equalizers for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems (OFDM). After introducing some theoretical aspects we derive a lower bound for the signal-to-noise ratio reduction due to equalization. Comparisons between two different equalizer structures, the least-mean square (LMS) and proportional equalizers, are presented and tested by simulation in a terrestrial TV channel with strong microreflections.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. Both slotted ALOHA and slotted direct-sequence CDMA (code division multiple access) are evaluated, using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation and forward error correction coding (FEC). In the case of CDMA, the application of maximal ratio combining is also taken into account. Numerical results are presented for arbitrary code lengths and for specific values of the number of resolvable paths. It is shown that CDMA can offer a substantial improvement over slotted ALOHA, especially when error correction and path diversity are applied.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM.
