Given the relative brevity of this essay, it does not pretend to give an exhaustive exposition of the theological trends in this rather vast and multicultural continent. Nonetheless, I hope to paint a satisfactory picture of this landscape, despite the limitations, so that readers could understand the methodological problems, epistemological controversies, and cultural complexities they would encounter through African history.","PeriodicalId":323507,"journal":{"name":"Interreligious Studies and Intercultural Theology","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114355700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on an analysis of Vanneste’s own articles and papers in relation to contemporary African and European theologians, I argue that Vanneste’s opinion changed over time. Originally an opponent of an authentic African theology, he developed into an ardent advocate. In order to explore the different stages that led Alfred Vanneste to change his ideas on the subject, I will first describe the debates and ideas about developing an authentic “African theology” that took place between 1958 and 1968. After that, I analyze developments within theological discourses (1974–1980) that led Alfred Vanneste to change his opinion. I conclude by summarizing his theological turn from opposing to advocating an indigenous African form of theology, and by contextualizing this shift as a transition from colonial, pre-Vatican II thinking about indigenous theologies to the current day developments within intercultural theology.","PeriodicalId":323507,"journal":{"name":"Interreligious Studies and Intercultural Theology","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129198935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Regarding the field of academic philosophy, this author insists on a unique African theology. On the role of Western legacy, this piece broadens Wolff’s approach in terms of how Western philosophy can commend itself. Thirdly, on the legacy of Africa’s colonial heritage, it denounces colonialism but argues against a simple Afro-centrism. On the issue of “relevance,” the tenability of Wolff’s view is questioned in the search for an African research methodology. The final point about who may legitimately speak is acknowledged as thorny. In conclusion, this response argues that Africa’s history is human history and recalls the need to distinguish between the “roots” and “routes” of African discourse. While the debate rages, this author proposes that the academy adopt an African Community-Based research (ACBR) methodology based on the guiding principle of Knowledge Diffusion.","PeriodicalId":323507,"journal":{"name":"Interreligious Studies and Intercultural Theology","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121657035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I propose that the first step towards decolonising African theology must begin with Africans themselves. First, Africans are called to soul search with the purpose of identifying the reasons why they have been so prone to abuse. Why do they lack self-esteem? It is easy to say that they lack self-esteem because they have been abused by outsiders, and especially Westerners. It is not enough to say that African cultures have been prone to abuse because of their malleability, flexibility, and receptivity which made them vulnerable to outside influence. Second, one of the major weaknesses of the African approach is to try to measure up to European standards using European scales, thus feeding off of the very system which it is trying to fight. The value of African theology is not that it has to be similar to Western theology, but rather that it has a value in itself.","PeriodicalId":323507,"journal":{"name":"Interreligious Studies and Intercultural Theology","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114916946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the historiography of Cameroonian Engelbert Mveng and that of his main critique Elridge Mohammadou, the article challenges traditional methods of Western historiographies of Africa and warns against the reductionisms of monocultural and nationalist histories and their traumatic effects. It concludes that interculturality can help historians unleash the healing powers of history as an academic and a taught discipline. For history to not repeat the same errors from the past, historians should not only respect the diversity of perspectives in interconnected yet multi-cultural settings, but also overcome monocultural and nationalistic histories in the classroom. Researching and writing African history today should therefore be global, intercultural and pedagogical processes.","PeriodicalId":323507,"journal":{"name":"Interreligious Studies and Intercultural Theology","volume":"77 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126022039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet the study and teaching of religions also involves evaluation of such, whether implicitly or intentionally, and these usually occur at the ideational level. This essay seeks to illuminate these operations from a comparative theological perspective, suggesting how the study, teaching, and evaluating of religious traditions in their multi-facetedness works both comparatively and theologically. We will spring off The Comparative Religious Ideas project from almost two decades ago both because of how it presented a marked improvement over prior approaches to religious comparativism and because of its prescience then in charting the terrain. From there, however, we will explore how the studying, teaching, and evaluating of religions involves engaging the realm of religious ideas with their concomitant (embodied) practices and from that perspective, the comparative task is both complexified and deepened. Our conclusions propose how to nurture comparative methodologies at both the cognitive and affective domains in order to further discussion in the study, teaching, and evaluation of religion.","PeriodicalId":323507,"journal":{"name":"Interreligious Studies and Intercultural Theology","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131317355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
