However, their placement in the infrazygomatic crest area can broaden the horizon of orthodontic treatment. The bone thickness in the infrazygomatic crest (IZC) area can vary at different heights and insertion angles during the placement of IZC screws between maxillary second premolar and second molar region. Aims and objectives: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the variation in bone thickness in the IZC area at different insertion angles along the mesiobuccal root of maxillary first molar and at different heights from the crest of the alveolar bone in the apical direction between maxillary second premolar and second molar region using cone beam computed tomography, so as to determine the best possible site where the bone thickness will be maximum that will suit to a particular size of IZC screw. Materials and Methods: CBCT images of 50 subjects were analyzed by a single observer, the bone thickness in the IZC area was measured and interpreted at different heights from the alveolar crest in the apical direction, that is, 5 mm, 7 mm, 9 mm, 11 mm at six regions between maxillary second premolar and second molar. Bone thickness was also measured at different insertion angles ranging from 55º to 75º to occlusal plane of permanent maxillary first molar along its mesiobuccal root. Results: The bone thickness in the IZC area was 4.5 mm–3.5 mm, when it was measured at different angles ranging from 55º to 75º to the occlusal plane of maxillary first molar along its mesiobuccal root with maximum bone thickness at 75° with a mean ± SD of 4.56 ± 1.4. Statistically significant differences in bone thickness were found between maxillary first and second molar on both right and left sides at different heights with maximum bone thickness at 11 mm apical from the alveolar crest with a mean ± SD of 2.03 ± 0.76 and 1.91 ± 0.88, respectively, and along the mesial root of maxillary second molar on right and left sides at 11 mm apical from the alveolar crest with a mean ± SD of 2.12 ± 0.80 and 1.95 ± 0.75, respectively. Conclusions: The best site and safe zone for miniscrew insertion in IZC area is at 7 mm to 9 mm distance from the alveolar crest apically along the mesial root of maxillary second molar and at an angle of 55°–75º to the occlusal plane of maxillary first molar, so as to ensure the adequate stability of the miniscrew and without causing any damage to the adjacent anatomical structures.","PeriodicalId":31847,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society","volume":" 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139622151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the metal artifact reduction software (MARS) system can be used in most CBCT units to reduce the amount of artifacts generated from various fixed orthodontic appliance components including skeletal anchorage devices. Aims and objectives: The main purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of MARS system of a CBCT unit in reducing the amount of artifacts generated by various fixed orthodontic appliance components during CBCT imaging. Materials and methods: Four dental arch shaped phantoms that were fabricated along with different fixed orthodontic appliance components (metal bracket, molar band, transpalatal arch, mini-implant) underwent CBCT scanning without and with the MARS setting option. After using the MARS system of a CBCT unit, the reduction in the amount of artifacts that were generated by various fixed orthodontic appliance component was calculated by using Google Colab software that utilized Python code and OpenCV system to generate a binary mask image. The resulting mask image highlights the areas where artifacts are detected, allowing for further analysis or visual inspection. The contours found within the mask image represent the boundaries of the artifact regions. Results: After calculating the percentage decrease in artifact area for each component of fixed orthodontic appliance, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was performed to compare the percentage decrease in artifact area for each component of fixed orthodontic appliances. *P-values are calculated using one-way analysis of variance ( p < 0.05). The percentage decrease in artifact area for different components of fixed orthodontic appliance ranged from 39.67% to 48.58%. The stainless steel bracket showed the significant artifact area reduction with a mean percentage decrease of 48.58% as compared to other components. Conclusion: The effect of MARS system in reducing the amount of metal artifacts generated varied according to the component type of fixed orthodontic appliance and, MARS system was more efficient for stainless steel brackets as compared to other components. CBCT imaging of head and neck region can be carried out without taking off the orthodontic appliances by applying MARS system which can significantly decrease the artifact area.","PeriodicalId":31847,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society","volume":"45 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139451945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is achieved by using pendulum appliance and temporary anchorage devices such as miniscrew anchorage system. To evaluate and compare the dentoalveolar and skeletal changes between pendulum appliance and miniscrew anchorage system. The patients were divided into 2 groups of 10 each: group I (using the pendulum appliance) and group II (using miniscrew anchorage system). Lateral cephalogram was taken for each subject and various skeletal such as SNA, SNB, ANB, and PTV-A dentoalveolar (U1-PTV, U6-PTV, U5-FH, and U6-FH) measurements were taken. The data obtained were statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Intragroup analysis between pendulum and implant group was done using Wilcoxon Matched pairs test and the intergroup analysis between pendulum and implant group was done using Mann–Whitney test. The results showed that there was nonsignificant difference in both the groups ( p > .05) with the less tipping in group II (1.2) than group I (2.7) .The molar extrusion was more with the pendulum group (2.1 mm) than the miniscrew anchorage distalization group (1.3 mm). The molar distalization using the miniscrew anchorage system showed more bodily movement than the pendulum appliance which showed more tipping movement. Moreover, the pendulum appliance showed significant amount of anchor loss than the miniscrew anchorage system.","PeriodicalId":31847,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society","volume":"7 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139450839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike other systems, the extra radicular placement and limited surgical exposure make the bone screws such as infrazygomatic crest screws (IZC screws) superior, and to capitalize on these benefits, stability of the implant is vital that relies on their precise placement and angulation. Hence, this article presents a simple implant guide with elastomeric impression material for the precise positioning of IZC screws with utmost ease in fabrication.","PeriodicalId":31847,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society","volume":" 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139141606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eighty retainer wires were placed in 40 patients. They were assigned to 2 groups and subjected to 2 different types of retainer wires (multistrand round and 8-braid flat). The mean durability of multistrand round retainer wire (235.7 ± 67.28 days) was more than 8-braid flat retainer wire (153.5 ± 43.85 days) irrespective of arches to which they were bonded, which was statistically significant. Scores for plaque index, calculus index, and gingival index were found more with 8-braid flat retainers and in lower arch than multistrand round retainer and in upper arch but these are statistically not significant. The mean durability of multistrand round retainer wire was more than 8-braid flat retainer wire. The analysis did not find any statistical significant association for deposition of plaque, calculus, and gingival inflammation between different retainer wires and between arches.","PeriodicalId":31847,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society","volume":" 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139137754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
