Method: Electronic search was conducted for relevant studies in last 20 years (from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2021) on the following databases: PubMed, Google scholar, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Wiley Library database. Hand searching of selected orthodontic journals was also undertaken. The selected studies were assessed for the risk of bias in Cochrane collaboration risk of bias tool. The “traffic plot” and “weighted plot” risk of bias distribution are designed in the RoB 2 tool. Two authors extracted the data which was then analyzed by another reviewer to obtain the final data. Results: Six studies fulfilled inclusion criteria. The risk of bias was high for all the studies. The sample size of the studies, methodologies used, muscles under study, parameters of muscles, and statistical analysis performed were extracted. The methodologies and results of the studies were found to be heterogenous. Conclusions: It is found that the vertical craniofacial dimensions can be better appreciated by masseter than by medial pterygoid. The volume of masseter is superior predictor than its cross-sectional area. The volume of the medial pterygoid affects the ramus of the mandible and the length and width of the lateral pterygoid are significantly correlated with transverse skeletal dimensions.","PeriodicalId":31847,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society","volume":"56 1","pages":"319 - 327"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47314928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods A 3-dimensional finite element model of maxillary arch was created and stimulated for first premolar extraction case with 0.022 slot Roth prescription bracket. DKHL and T-loop arch wire were created using 19×25 stainless steel and was opened 1 mm for activation using 2 different methods. The study was divided into 2 groups based on the loop design, method of activation, and degree of Gable bend. The stress distribution, tooth displacement, and moment-force ratio were calculated. Result The overall stress distribution was more or less uniform in all the groups. However, maximum von Mises stress was observed in the second premolar region for both the groups. There was greater torque and vertical control in the anterior segment and better anchorage control in posterior segment with increase in degree of Gable bend for both the loops activated using ligature tie. Moment-force ratio of 8-10 was achieved for both the loops. Conclusion Therefore, DKHL was as efficient as T-loop in producing the desirable biomechanical properties during en mass space closure.","PeriodicalId":31847,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society","volume":"57 1","pages":"142 - 149"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45510793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when it presents, it is a complex orthodontic challenge. Treatment choices vary from no treatment to surgical exposure followed by orthodontic traction. Surgical exposure and orthodontic traction is an option that requires careful consideration of factors such as labiolingual position of the crown, vertical position of the tooth relative to mucogingival junction, amount of attached gingiva, and mesiodistal position of the crown. Age is an important factor in the prognosis of impacted maxillary canine treatment. Prognosis is lower in an adult compared to a younger patient and worsens with age. We report this case of impacted left maxillary canine (23) with palatal displacement in a young adult. A modified cantilever system was used for an early movement of canine from the lateral incisor which showed a grade II mobility. This along with controlled mechanics resulted in bringing the impacted 23 into class I position in the arch, thereby achieving a stable canine-guided occlusion within a period of 16 months.","PeriodicalId":31847,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society","volume":"56 1","pages":"400 - 402"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44688092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we evaluated and identified the bacterial contamination on orthodontic appliances along with the disinfecting efficacy of ultraviolet (UV) light and various sterilization methods. Methods Different orthodontic appliances were obtained from manufacturers divided into 5 sterilization methods and a control group (control, UV, dry heat and steam autoclave, ethyl alcohol, and 2% glutaraldehyde). Microbiological and DNA sequencing was performed on the appliances to identify the contaminated bacteria. Results Bacterial contamination identified on the orthodontic appliances were Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Lactobacilli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus licheniformis, and Bacillus cereus. UV sterilization method effectively prevented the bacterial growth when compared to the control (unsterilized) orthodontic appliances. Conclusion We concluded that the orthodontic appliances received from the manufacturer showed bacterial contamination. All of the tested sterilization methods including UV light were effective in eliminating the bacterial contamination on the orthodontic appliances. Since UV light does not cause change in material properties and is cost effective with relative ease of use, its use in clinical practice for the disinfection of orthodontic appliances is suggested before placement in the mouth.","PeriodicalId":31847,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society","volume":"57 1","pages":"98 - 105"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44244181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: An extensive literature search was performed in multiple electronic databases such as PubMed, Medline, Embase, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest which included articles published from May 1982 to March 2021 in the English language. Furthermore, only randomized clinical trials and original research studies were included. The risk of bias in the included studies was assessed by using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool ROBVIS (Risk-of-bias VISualization tool). Results: A total of 2,736 articles were retrieved and 974 duplicate records were eliminated; subsequently, articles were screened based on title and abstracts, inclusion and exclusion criteria from which a total of 14 original articles were included in the systematic review. Of the 14 included studies, 5 studies showed a low risk of bias, 6 studies showed a moderate risk of bias, and 3 showed a high risk of bias. Four studies showed a positive correlation and 10 studies showed a negative correlation between divine proportions and facial esthetics. Conclusion: The evidence from this study suggests that there exists a weak correlation between divine proportions and facial esthetics. Hence, divine proportions are not absolute determinants and are only partially related to facial attractiveness. Further high-quality cross-sectional studies with a strong methodology are needed to establish the correlation between divine proportions and facial esthetics and to support this evidence.
