In particular, the Right to Data Portability is intended to facilitate switching between online services by allowing users to port data between service providers. However, little is known about psychological factors that influence whether users desire switching between services and using data portability. Identifying such factors could support the design of user-friendly data portability solutions and awareness-raising measures, thereby strengthening users’ digital sovereignty. The present study therefore examines predictors of users’ intentions to switch online services and their attitudes towards data portability (i.e., intention to use portability). Drawing upon related research, switching intentions and attitudes towards data portability are assumed to be affected by users’ technology acceptance, technology competency and subjective importance of privacy. An online quantitative questionnaire study with a large, sociodemographically diverse German sample (N = 995) was conducted, and data were analyzed via logistic regression modelling. The results reveal that switching intentions are more prevalent among users who attach great importance to privacy, users who are open towards new technologies, as well as younger users and users with a university degree. Higher importance of privacy and higher technology competency are linked to an increased desire to use data portability. Users reported the greatest need for data portability for data-storage (i.e., cloud) services. From the results, conclusions for implementing user-friendly data portability solutions and public information campaigns are drawn, and directions for further user-centered research on online service switching and data portability are discussed.","PeriodicalId":318322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2022","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121234124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While most of the studies focus on the possible applications, others are directed towards the actuated movement accuracy. Extending the latter, we tested 9 different signal designs that combine the actuation of the muscle with the actuation of its antagonist. Our results indicate that the movement is not consistent when combining two opposing actuations although single muscles can be actuated consistently. Based on our obtained results, we distill design recommendations.","PeriodicalId":318322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2022","volume":"254 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126132564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are embedded in our smartphones or smart home devices. Just as natural language processing has improved the conversation with VAs, ongoing work in speech emotion recognition also suggests that VAs will soon become emotion- and personality-aware. However, the social implications, ethical borders and the users’ general attitude towards such VAs remain underexplored. In this paper, we investigate users’ attitudes towards and preferences for emotionally aware VAs in three different cultures. We conducted an online questionnaire with N = 364 participants in Germany, China, and Egypt to identify differences and similarities in attitudes. Using a cluster analysis, we identified three different basic user types (Enthusiasts, Pragmatists, and Skeptics), which exist in all cultures. We contribute characteristic properties of these user types and highlight how future VAs should support customizable interactions to enhance user experience across cultures.","PeriodicalId":318322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2022","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115021628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, they can support independent learning without increasing the burden on teachers. In this paper, we investigate the potential and the design requirements of such learning experiences for children. We implement a novel mobile app that auto-generates context-based multimedia material for learning English. It automatically labels photos children take with the app and uses them as a trigger for generating content using machine translation, image retrieval, and text-to-speech. An exploratory study with 25 children showed that children were ready to engage to an equal extent with this app and a non-personal version using random instead of personal photos. Overall, the children appreciated the independence gained compared to learning at school but missed the teachers’ support. From a technological perspective, we found that auto-generation works in many cases. However, handling erroneous input, such as blurry images and spelling mistakes, is crucial for children as a target group. We conclude with design recommendations for future projects, including scaffolds for the photo-taking process and information redundancy for identifying inaccurate auto-generation results.","PeriodicalId":318322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2022","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122614706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By involving the users in the ideation phase, we noticed several side effects on the company and its members. Using Reflexive Thematic Analysis, we identified patterns revealing these observed effects of our work. The Contextual Design Process promoted the awareness of the company’s internal status focusing problems and the independent addressing of them. In particular the participatory Wall Walk with the company members served as a key event for changes in the company. Furthermore, we discuss our findings on the challenges and implications of a small and consistent user group throughout the user-centred and participatory process.","PeriodicalId":318322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2022","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128689481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In case of an emergency, alerting apps are being used more and more in both professional and lay contexts. Fire departments, in particular, supplement alerts of their firefighters with alerting apps. These apps send the same alarm cue to the smartphones simultaneously with the (digital) radio message receivers of the first responders. To date, an overview of the functions of such apps and their respective importance is missing. Our research fills this research gap by summarizing functions of alerting apps in an overview manner. In addition, first responders (N = 287) as users of alerting apps rated and ranked the functions in terms of their importance, the app usability and were openly asked about advantages and disadvantages of such apps. The resulting ranking enables the selection of suitable alerting apps. However, both quantitative data and responses to open questions show clear deficits mentioned by the users in the area of usability and technical requirements. This is particularly critical, since every second counts in the alerting of first responders.","PeriodicalId":318322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2022","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128028331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To do so, we decided to analyze individual biomechanical models of 3D scanned human bodies and subsequent motions in OpenSim (OSim). Other than most existing approaches, our biomechanical model is reduced to be well suited for the fundamental assessment of exoskeletons. To create the model, parameters are derived from body segment shapes. Further, motion trajectories from various tracking systems can be integrated due to the utilization of Mirevi Motion Hub (MMH). Tools are provided in order to cut the scanned body into segments, to automatically calculate mass as well as inertia properties and to integrate them in an OSim model. In addition, we propose a conversion from the MMH file format into an OSim readable file format. Overall, we consider our solution as flexible, as we only assume a mesh as output of the body scan and as different tracking systems can be leveraged by using the MMH middleware. Future work will address the evaluation of our framework.","PeriodicalId":318322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2022","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127228783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, many map providers do not adequately meet the needs of users with blindness, low vision or mobility impairments. Therefore, we investigated interaction concepts for an accessible mobile map application. Theses concepts not only focus on the user interface, but also on the map content, which should be accessible to the target groups as well. We conducted a pilot study in which nine participants tested the usability and accessibility of the developed application. Our results show that we created a viable alternative for making map content accessible to people with different needs by providing an additional list view. Feedback from subjects indicated that in future, the listed items need to be meaningfully classified and ordered such that users with visual impairments or blindness can use them to form a mental picture of their surroundings.","PeriodicalId":318322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2022","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131288304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most tools are focused on creating entire 3D applications or require extensive knowledge in programming and 3D modeling. With reference to End-User Development (EUD), we present a design case study for an end-user-friendly authoring tool that allows domain experts to create individual AR avatars in the field of Human-Food Interaction. After reviewing current approaches and design guidelines, we designed and implemented FADER, a web-based tool for creating AR-based food avatars. Our evaluation shows that playful design fosters immersion, and that abstract placeholders and highly simplified controls empower non-developers to create AR content. Our study contributes to a better understanding of end-user needs and practices during the AR creation process and informs the design of future AR authoring tools.","PeriodicalId":318322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2022","volume":"58 36","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131603658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
