The proxy may be located at different parts of the network, thus affecting the feedback delay from the base station to the proxy. A queueing model is constructed and solved to study the performance tradeoffs among system parameters and in particular, how the proxy performance is affected by the feedback control delay between base stations and the proxy. Using image compression as an example, we examine response time and fraction of compression as a function of the control delay. Our results reveal that the proxy function can effectively control response time in the case of link congestion, if the delay is reasonably small, e.g. when the proxy is located close to the radio link. We also find that to assess the effectiveness of the control mechanism, it is necessary to examine whether the proxy performs content reduction when and only when link congestion occurs. Towards this end, we study the system-state probabilities and the correlation between response time and compression.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. A proportional fairness method has been proposed to realize high data throughput. This paper proposes a modification to the proportional fairness method to add capabilities for adjustment of the difference of throughput among access terminals. In the proposal, the formula which computes the average transmission rate of the proportional fairness method is modified. The effect of the proposal is that it permits flexible adjustment of the unevenness of throughput per access terminal which originates in the position of an access terminal relation to an access point. The performance of the proposed method is analyzed from several aspects, namely, throughput per sector, distance characteristics of throughput per access terminal and transmission acquisition cycle by computer simulations. It has been proved in consequence that the proposed method has the expected effect.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. Open-loop and closed-loop transmit diversity modes with two transmit antennas have already been included in 3GPP WCDMA Release 4, and at the moment schemes exploiting a larger number of transmit antennas are being developed. This paper analyzes the performance of a simple closed-loop transmit diversity scheme suitable for 3GPP WCDMA. The goal is to study the effect of different feedback delays on the performance of the given closed-loop scheme. Although the analysis applies only in the case of the specific algorithm (phase-only feedback) it is expected that the performance of the more general magnitude and phase feedback shows similar properties. We use signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain as a performance measure, which corresponds to the gain in expected received SNR in a mobile terminal when feedback information from the receiver is applied in the transmitter.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. In this paper, we propose a MAC protocol which can do simultaneous code-time access control to avoid the optimisation problem, and to achieve better system utilisation. In order to do that, the proposed protocol decouples the function of transmission ordering from the function of packing all the scheduled transmissions in the resource space. As such, different transmission scheduling algorithms can be adopted without altering the protocol. A water filling approach is used for efficient transmission packing where each of the scheduled transmissions is treated as a rectangular capsule with an arbitrary size and the resource space is viewed as a water container. Simulation results indicate that the proposed protocol can achieve higher throughput compared to single dimensional access control protocols. Therefore, the proposed MAC protocol is a more efficient one.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. In other words, the mobile ad hoc network has symmetric links, which means that two neighboring nodes A and B are within the transmission range of one another. However, since nodes consume battery power independently according to their computing and communication load, there exist asymmetric links, which means that node A is within node B's transmission range, but not vice versa. In this paper, two approaches are presented to support routing in the existence of asymmetric links: GAHA (GPS-based Hop-by-hop Acknowledgment) and GAPA (GPS-based Passive Acknowledgment) schemes. Both GAHA and GAPA can be applied to any routing protocols by utilizing GPS (Global Positioning System) location information. Simulation results reveal that both GAHA and GAPA protocols cope well in the presence of asymmetric wireless links and nodes' mobility.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. This paper is devoted to performance evaluation of the DDFSD when the feedforward filter of a minimum mean square error decision feedback equalizer is adopted as a prefilter. A truncated version of the union bound is used to approximate the bit error rate. This type of handoff results in a better support of seamless communication services, capacity enhancement, QoS improvement, etc. Because of the existence of more parameters and flexibilities compared to hard-handoff, an optimum solution for soft-handoff management and admission control for new and handoff calls is necessary. We propose a new algorithm with two thresholds for admission of new and handoff calls, and with two decision boundaries for controlling of handoff traffic. We compare this algorithm with a simpler one with only one decision boundary, by employing a general and flexible 3-dimensional framework with respect to important traffic parameters including loss probability, carried traffic, blocking and dropping probabilities, and show that our algorithm can result in less loss probability as well as less blocking and dropping probabilities with more control over traffic growth in the cell.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications.
