The application of this principle is suggested to enhance the spectral efficiency by omitting the usage of training sequences on the up-link. This is desired in order to enable the efficient transmission of very short data packets, like single ATM cells. The principle proposed also keeps the complexity of synchronization low at the base station, which is accessed by many users. We describe a simple scheme to limit the transmission power on the up-link. The power is kept constant by deleting subcarriers that are severely attenuated due to fading. Parameter estimation steps for retrieving the data at the base-station are explained and evaluated. Those include the estimation of the timing-offset, the carrier phase offset, and the received magnitude. Coherent demodulation is considered.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. PIMRC 2001. Proceedings (Cat. In order to satisfy these requirements, efficiency in the use of scarce frequency resources is essential. To this end, we further examine adaptive modulation which is a very good method to improve transmission efficacy over fluctuating channel conditions. Thus far, proposals that either incorporate or introduce the use of adaptive modulation require the negotiation of the modulation or coding scheme for use between the transmitter and the receiver. This negotiation results in a large overhead and requires very high transmission channel quality. In order to eliminate the need for this negotiation, we proposed a layered demodulation scheme with bit separated coding (see Uesugi, M. et al., WPMC'00-1165, 2000) that we believe provides a very effective solution to this end. This paper shows an intersymbol interference rejecting scheme which uses bit separated coding. The effect of the coding is that the performance of interference cancellation has been tremendously improved.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. The assumption is that the decoder is to be implemented in software rather than hardware, and thus a variable number of decoder iterations is not only possible, but desirable. Three twists on the decoding algorithm am proposed: (1) a linear approximation of the correction function used by the max* operator which reduces complexity with only a negligible loss in BER performance; (2) a method for normalizing the backward recursion which yields a 12.5% savings in memory usage; and (3) a simple method for halting the decoder iterations based only on the log-likelihood ratios.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. However, TCP performs poorly in wireless networks running at high bit error rates. In this paper, a new enhancement to TCP based on a previously proposed scheme is introduced. The method is based on the Snoop protocol and is similarly used for fixed host to mobile host direction. The proposed method has been compared with the Snoop protocol and other enhancement protocols proposed for the wireless TCP. It has been shown that the new explicit loss notification with acknowledgement has superior performance to Snoop and other protocols. The proposed method improves the end-to-end reliable transport performance in mobile environments.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. While some saw it as \"simply\" freeing us from standards, by allowing the definition of the radio terminal in software (hence software defined radio, SDR), we see it as changing not only the way we think radio systems and networks, but also the way we define and provide the services and adapt the applications that ran on top of them. We discuss this much broader, all encompassing approach. While the \"canonical\" SDR approach concentrates on the terminal side, ours covers the whole system, extending through the network into service creation and application development, and delving into the impact on spectrum usage, regulation and standardisation. Instead of settling for defining the terminal in software, we envision reconfiguring on demand not only the terminal but also the serving network(s) and the services they provide (hence reconfigurable radio systems and networks). As this approach is put to work in Europe, our vision of reconfigurability continues to evolve. We focus on the different perception manufacturers, operators and application developers have of reconfigurability, of its role, and how these viewpoints are expected to evolve with their evolving business models.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. The first algorithm is based on the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm that makes use of a signal decomposition to compute separate dosed form recursion expressions for the channel coefficient re-estimates. The a posterior conditional channel state probabilities required by the EM-based turbo-estimation can be easily provided by the forward-backward trellis search performed by the soft-in soft-out (SISO) ISI decoding task. The second algorithm is based on the well-known bootstrap algorithm where soft information from the outer decoder is used to make hard decisions on transmitted coded data, and the detected coded data are used in the channel turbo-estimation process via the conventional linear pseudo-inverse method. Both of the proposed channel turbo-estimation algorithms are naturally embedded in the framework of the turbo-detector, bringing almost no overhead to the receiver complexity.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. This scheme is implemented by the distribution of tags by receivers among transmitters. We focus on reverse links of a CDMA/TDM system where for every slot, each base station issues M(/spl ges/1) tags to M mobile users (MU) based on the ranked reverse link gains. The number of tags thus issued depends on the expected traffic, the number of cells and the propagation conditions in the network. Two types of tags can be issued: eg, hard and soft tags. A MU will transmit only if it receives a tag from its home base station (BS) and no hard tag from any other BS. Hence, in our scheme, MU that not only have stronger channel pins to their respective home BS but also cause relatively lower inter-cell interference are scheduled for transmissions. This scheme is hence a cooperative approach whereby good-neighbor behaviour is exhibited. Soft-tagging offers flexibility in allowing MU that cause moderate inter-cell interference to transmit under certain conditions such as longer starved time. Simulation results in shadow and a Rayleigh failing environment are presented to show that our scheme outperforms the conventional scheme by 30% in transmit bit energy when M = 10 in a 9-cell network with 100 MU uniformly distributed.","PeriodicalId":318292,"journal":{"name":"12th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications.
