The stream is a significant spring-fed tributary of the River Nayar, situated in the Agroda village of Pauri district, Uttarakhnad state. Several physico-chemical parameters were examined from October 2019 to September 2020 to assess the periphyton growth conditions. These parameters included water temperature, current velocity, dissolved oxygen, pH, total alkalinity, and total hardness. The results indicated that all these physico-chemical parameters were favorable for periphyton growth during the winter season. The periphyton community in the stream comprised 12 genera, including Diatoma, Navicula, Cymbella, Fragillaria, Synedra, Gomphonema, Nitzschia, and Tabellaria from the Bacillariophyceae, Ulothrix, Stigeoclonium, and Spirogyra from the Chlorophyceae and Phormidium from the Myxophyceae. The density of periphyton was found to be highest during the winter season and lowest during the monsoon season. To assess the diversity of the periphyton community, the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and Margalef index were calculated. The researchers employed multivariate cluster analysis and the Simper test to determine the similarity and average dissimilarity of periphyton composition among different seasons. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was performed to investigate the influence of abiotic factors on periphyton abundance. Additionally, multivariate Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was conducted to depict the abundance of periphyton during different seasons.Overall, the study provides insights into the periphyton community dynamics, diversity, and response to abiotic factors in the Datpul Gad stream throughout the 2019-2020 period.","PeriodicalId":31687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mountain Area Research","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87403763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Srinagar Garhwal, located on the banks of the Alaknanda River, a tributary of the Ganga, is one of the largest human settlements in the basin. A five-year study was planned to measure short-term changes in the ecological health of this river. For this work, we re-examined diatom mounts for 1991-92 (1st period) and 1995-96 (2nd period) and subjected them to species count for determining van Dam ecological categories. The tolerant N-autotroph, polyoxybiontic, βmesosaprobe, mesotrophic, and aquatic to aerophilic categories predominated in both periods, but their percentage increased considerably in the 2 nd period. A rise in the proportion of these categories, with the exception of polyoxybiontic, indicates deterioration of ecosystem health. Scrutiny of the categories indicated that only 9 taxa accounted for 21.6% of the polyoxybiontic category compared to 17 taxa for 20.6% of the tolerant N2 autotroph, which can also be used to enhance river health evaluation, especially in categories with few taxa accounting for a substantial percentage. This study will serve as a historical reference for the river health. The present growth of hydropower plants, together with numerous stressors, is increasing the source of disturbance, emphasizing the importance of having benchmarks for ecological states.","PeriodicalId":31687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mountain Area Research","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87518335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It contends that nations' attitude on giving a nearly total exemption to emissions by the defence wing is incorrect. The study is concerned on the pollution of the natural environment caused by this sector in general, and specifically by its contamination of the delicate Himalayan ecology. It highlights the problems through numerous aspects for comprehension, beginning with a description of how the mountains became the chosen choice as a battleground. The deployment of armed forces at international boundaries across mountain ranges has become the norm in the Himalayan region, sadly leading to the ecologically sensitive zone's demise. The paper brings out the dilemma embedded in these inherent tradeoffs, arguing that the natural environment is a source of security for nations that must not be sacrificed for fanciful war games","PeriodicalId":31687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mountain Area Research","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79078157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present investigation, a lesser-known medicinal plant Berberis asiatica root extracts were studied. Phytochemical screening for the metabolites was accomplished with extracts prepared in five different solvents methanol, ethanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and deionized water. The methanolic extract was found good for extraction. Therefore, it was subjected to antioxidant capacity measurement. Phytochemical screening revealed the occurrence of tannins, alkaloids, saponins, and flavonoids and the absence of steroids, cardiac glycosides, anthraquinones, phenols, and terpenoids. Antioxidant measurements showed Berberis asiatica root contains significant amounts of antioxidant compounds.","PeriodicalId":31687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mountain Area Research","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81514876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Covid-19 pandemic in India had a significant impact on the SMEs sector. The Covid-19 outbreak demonstrates how pandemics can disrupt supply chains all over the world. Therefore, more research needs to be done in this area so that we can handle worsening situations in future. This article discusses the key success criteria in terms of management strategies and critical management practices that are critical for a sustainable supply chain. Secondary research was used to generate data on the success of SMEs in Uttarakhand, which was then examined for the contribution of management practices and their impact on SMEs' performance. 150 SMEs employees were evaluated using a systematic questionnaire. The questionnaire analyzed managerial personnel's commitment to and desire to implement long-standing business practices in light of management principles, as well as their impact on the performance of SMEs. Statistical methods were used to analyze the final results. It was established that managerial practices were critical for the development and expansion of SMEs in Uttarakhand's hilly regions. Employee recruitment and selection have a substantial impact on the growth of SME's. The study has immediate implications for academics researching how management practices affect the performance, growth, and development of SMEs, as well as for government officials who must take the necessary steps to properly train entrepreneurs and encourage them to incorporate these practices in their businesses located in Uttarakhand's hills and plains.","PeriodicalId":31687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mountain Area Research","volume":"383 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80717194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 27 bacterial strains were isolated from the rizhospheric soil of the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plant, and their antagonistic activities against a few of the selected pathogenic bacteria and fungi were evaluated using dual-culture assays, biochemical tests for the production of Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN), Indole Acetic Acid (IAA), Iron Chelating Agent (siderophore), and phosphate solubilisation. Furthermore, the separated antagonists were examined for the generation of hydrolytic enzymes such as protease, amylase, ß-1, 3 glucanase, cellulose, chitinase, and pectinase. In all 27 strains isolated, the highest antagonistic activity was shown by only two bacterial strains Pseudomonas (VK1and VK2), against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella typhi, Xanthomonas campestris, Bacillus sp., Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus niger, A. flavus and Fusarium sp. Both the strains were identified as Pseudomonas sp. on the basis of morphological, physiological and biochemical characterization. Comparatively, strain VK1 was more effective against above pathogens than VK2 strain which was confirmed by dual culture assay. Both the strains of Pseudomonas sp. further were characterized for their antagonistic traits like production of HCN, IAA, siderophore, insoluble phosphate solubilising ability and hydrolytic enzymes properties. Similarly, VK1 strain showed positive test for all above biochemical tests, while VK2 strain was not able to produce IAA and showed negative test for phosphate solubilizing activities. So, VK1 strain of Pseudomonas was able to produce all above hydrolytic enzymes and found to be efficient antagonistic PGPRs. These findings indicated that isolated Pseudomonas sp. has a promising natural, eco-friendly, bio-safe and cost effective approach to cope against both phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi.","PeriodicalId":31687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mountain Area Research","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90198845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
