The wideband frequency spectrum is obtained by employing a weakly tapered external magnetic field which is set above exact grazing. Operation at such magnetic fields has been demonstrated by initial experimental observations. It will be shown that, in spite of a large launching loss over the whole frequency region, it is possible to obtain significant gain over a broad bandwidth. Also, it will be shown that the absolute instability, that usually occurs in the gyrotron traveling wave amplifier, can be avoided by operating at a high beam voltage. Finally, results on the effect of temperature on the performance of the device will be presented.","PeriodicalId":314918,"journal":{"name":"1983 Eighth International Conference on Infrared and Millimeter Waves","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126189087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although our main interest is in the use of this semiconductor as a mixer for far infrared heterodyne experiments [3], we have inevitably also studied its wider response. Although this research is at a fairly early stage, and some of the results are not easy to interpret, our best detector has a good detectivity (NEP < 1 × 10−11 WHz−½ at 500 μm and < 5 × 10−12 WHz−½ at 900 μm), with a significantly faster response than n-InSb. Moreover, construction of the detector is very simple compared with n-InSb where considerable ingenuity is required to make high impedance, high voltage responsivity detectors without employing magnetic fields.","PeriodicalId":314918,"journal":{"name":"1983 Eighth International Conference on Infrared and Millimeter Waves","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125587796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
