In a documentary study, which is part of a broader research on relations between grammar and reading comprehension (Batalha, 2017), we analyse a set of examinations carried out between 2008 and 2014 to identify and to characterise items that evaluate the comprehension of referential dependencies in reading and, specifically, the identification of antecedents of different types of anaphoric expressions. The information obtained, which includes statistical data on students’ performance on various items, not only shows that referential dependencies are, in general terms, evaluated in examinations, but also that this may still be a problematic area at the end of basic education.","PeriodicalId":313789,"journal":{"name":"Revista da Associação Portuguesa de Linguística","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128272267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in Portuguese the compound form can also be associated with temporal relations of posteriority, overlapping and temporal underspecification (see Leal, 2001; Móia & Viotti, 2005; Lobo, 2006; Cunha et al., 2008 a.o.). This non-anteriority compound gerund exhibits certain peculiarities, namely (i) it can only occur to the right of the matrix clause, (ii) it can freely alternate with the simple gerund, without affecting the interpretation of the clause, and (iii) it can only co-occur with certain T heads in the matrix clause, namely with those containing an [+ ANTERIOR] feature. Wurmbrand (2012) describes a similar set of properties for the parasitic participles in Germanic languages and explains them through feature valuation in Reverse Agree. In this paper, I will argue that the Portuguese non-anteriority compound gerund is a product of the same syntactic mechanism and occurs due to feature valuation of the gerund T against the matrix T in Upward Agree.","PeriodicalId":313789,"journal":{"name":"Revista da Associação Portuguesa de Linguística","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122478564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this view, the main goal of this paper is to investigate the linguistic factors that contribute to this aspectual behaviour regarding verbs of motion in European Portuguese. In particular, we consider the fictive motion hypothesis; the influence of tenses like the Presente do Indicativo (Simple Present) and the Imperfeito (Imperfect) that stativize the predications with which they co-occur; the status of the “figure” and, finally, the role played by the different subclasses of verbs of motion, with special reference to the distinction between inherently directed verbs and manner of motion verbs. We conclude that, like other types of verbs, the aspectual feature of dynamicity seems to play a crucial role in the alternation at hand.","PeriodicalId":313789,"journal":{"name":"Revista da Associação Portuguesa de Linguística","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115034914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cardinaletti","doi":"10.26334/2183","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.26334/2183","url":null,"abstract":"In this paper, it is argued that cliticization is extraction out of a big DP. Big DPs contain both clitic pronouns and associate DP arguments (Torrego, 1995; Uriagereka, 1995, 2005, among others). The DP can be pronounced, which gives rise to a clitic doubling configuration, or can be null, in which case a simple clitic configuration is obtained. This hypothesis allows us to explain not only the limited movement possibilities of clitic pronouns (cf. Belletti 1999), but also their restricted inventory: Not all complements can be cliticized. If clitic pronouns are reduced maximal projections (Cardinaletti and Starke, 1999), the big DP hypothesis needs to be revisited. Clitic pronouns cannot be assumed to be the heads of big DPs, as was suggested in the abovementioned proposals. The proposal is that clitic pronouns are merged as specifiers of the highest projection of big DPs, namely K(ase)P, which also captures the fact that they are the only elements which bear morphological case in languages like Italian.","PeriodicalId":313789,"journal":{"name":"Revista da Associação Portuguesa de Linguística","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127223471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on data collected through a combination of different research methods, the analysis suggests that the differences between MP and EP are limited: in both varieties, there are three semantic classes of the conditionals (factual, hypothetical and counterfactual) and the correlation between tense/mood and interpretation of conditionals is not necessarily biunivocal. However, there are some differences between MP and EP in contexts where tenses and mood are used in a more marked way in hypothetical and counterfactual conditionals. Moreover, other differences result from ambiguous EP input, and the fact that MP speakers use distinct grammatical rules: common to EP and particular rules of MP.","PeriodicalId":313789,"journal":{"name":"Revista da Associação Portuguesa de Linguística","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124801369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a description implies dealing with the complexity, the gradualness of linguistic phenomena, the compulsory contextualization of discourses, both in discursive genres and in their enunciative circumstances. This description testifies that regularities also exist in use and there should not be an excessive cut between describing the language and describing the use of language. Unlike what happens in Brazilian Portuguese, in European Portuguese there are few researches that focus on these uses, and even less researches that deal with oral productions, namely interactional and informal, based on corpora. It is necessary to pay more attention to the uses, above all to the description of the functioning of the language as discourse updated in certain discursive genres, as the informal conversation. These studies are crucial both for the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language and as a mother tongue, since describing only the system, the standard variety, generally written, is scientifically reductive and ineffective from the point of view of teaching. But descriptions of uses are also essential for translation studies or contrastive analyzes of both different languages and different varieties of Portuguese. Starting from small research experiences that take place with university students, we propose a research route with corpora of familiar conversations, which try to account for the unguarded oral uses of the language, in an interaction context. Finally, two examples of this working plan will be advanced: that of the presentational marker \"é assim\" and that of the vague nominal quantifiers, with a function of attenuation and diminution of the speaker's enunciative responsibility, \"Um bocado = a bit\" and \"Um bocadinho = a little.\" We will conclude by showing how the corpora analysis of informal conversations even allows us to better understand some characteristics of literary texts.","PeriodicalId":313789,"journal":{"name":"Revista da Associação Portuguesa de Linguística","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128856870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to do so, we carried out phonetic transcription of excerpts from 9 spontaneous interviews with Santomean informants, who were recorded in San Tome in 2008 and 2012. The data were transcribed with the EXMARaLDA Partitur software, counted manually, and linguistically analysed. The findings were confronted with recent studies on rhotics in this variety. Our data confirm that the neutralization of the distinction between /ʀ/ and /ɾ/ is a tendency stabilizing in the younger age groups of the urban population of São Tomé (cf. Bouchard, 2017). In light of the overall results, we further propose that São Tomean Portuguese lacks a phonological distinction between /ʀ/ and /ɾ/ (cf. Brandão, 2016; Brandão et al., no prelo).","PeriodicalId":313789,"journal":{"name":"Revista da Associação Portuguesa de Linguística","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114594408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The verbal forms that alternate are investigated in the same context (predicative construction of a change of state) and motivations for the variation to occur. The main objective of this research is to identify: (i) constructional verbal patterns of change of state in Brazilian Portuguese based on frequency and in the relations of form and/or meaning by family similarities existing in the instances of use of such verbal forms; (ii) the configuration of the relational construction of state change (in view of state construction formulated in Goldberg, 1995); (iii) the functional differences between the microconstructions with ficar, tornar-se e virar, seeking to analyze how the variation/alternation between such verbs occurs in the construction of change of state. The data were collected in academic articles, journalistic texts and texts accessed in some sites of evaluation or complaint and analyzed according to some parameters, among which: (a) the type of subject and of predicative syntagma; (b) the more permanent/more transient aspect of the construction; (c) the degree of formality of the context in which it was recorded. This paper also evidences the central place of variation in Construction Grammar.","PeriodicalId":313789,"journal":{"name":"Revista da Associação Portuguesa de Linguística","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121449956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data presented in our previous work attested the use of these expressions in written discourse, contradicting what is stated in some grammars. A distinction between two constructions is established: (a) those in which the coordinate nominal expression refers only one entity, which are commonly considered acceptable in grammatical descriptions; (b) those in which nouns are used to refer distinct entities, which are often considered anomalous or even ungrammatical. We focus especially on structures involving a singular determiner and two singular nouns and observe the type of agreement triggered by the nominal expression in each case: singular agreement versus plural agreement. Our proposal is based on the idea that these constructions correspond to structures that are distinct from the beginning of syntactic derivation, differing with respect to the coordinated categories (NP versus DP) and the number of determiners selected for the numeration (only one determiner from the beginning versus two determiners in the beginning and post-syntactic deletion of the second determiner), and provides a simple account of internal and external agreement facts.","PeriodicalId":313789,"journal":{"name":"Revista da Associação Portuguesa de Linguística","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116045634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
