The aim of the article is to perform a sociological analysis of university students’ ideas about life success in conditions of modern society. Students of a technical university formed the object of analysis. The subject of the study is their ideas about life success in the context of digitalization and the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis is conducted simultaneously at two levels: theoretical and empirical. The comparison of the empirical data of 2022 with similar indicators of achieving life success, taken from our survey of the 1980–1990s, yields the following results. Respondents of 2022 survey have a novel model of a successful life path, which largely depends on personal capital – a set of individual-personal and social resources. This group is a product of the digital society of millennials. Despite the differences between the respondents of both groups by the indicators under consideration, cultural and moral continuity between them remains. The main group of respondents (2022) focuses on achieving their life success in the territories where they received education, where their relatives and friends live, where a demand exists for their skills and abilities along with opportunities to achieve their life success. The study is based on the authors’ research of the past years, conceptual developments of the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the field of the state of the social structure of Russia and the sociology of culture. The authors propose an original concept for the development of specific measures to determine social stratification based on the factors of cultural influence on the social well-being of citizens. The article contains a well-founded definition of the concept of social well-being, provides a list and analysis of factors determining the influence of culture on social well-being, supposes the latest data characterizing the current state of Russian culture, and its various types. Based on the factor analysis of research data from previous years, the authors propose a conceptual scheme for studying the influence of culture on social well-being as a means of overcoming the stratification of modern Russian society. The author analyzes transformation of the traditional family hierarchy, which leads to the fact that one of the topical issues of the modern family is the problem of the formation of power relations. According to the author’s opinion, the formation of power relations in the family originates in the premarital period. When considering families, the author distinguishes two systems of power relations in families – authoritarian and democratic ones. The first type includes families with the authoritarian leadership of one of the family members. The second type includes families with a democratic distribution of power between spouses. This type is characteristic of an egalitarian family, based on equality. The concept of head of the family, which means a family member exercising family power, is closely related to the system of power relations in the family. Under family power, it is customary to understand the ability of one family member to change behavior or influence the behavior of other members. The author analyzes the results of a sociological study on the problem of the formation of power relations in the family. The object of the study was residents of the Republic of Buryatia (N = 273). The study revealed that the formation of power relations in the family is formed on the base of the use of various means, including violence. The use of violence helps to establish even greater power over subordinate family members.
