The model presents analytically the correlation between cell parameters and the velocity tuning curve. The \"building-block\" for this model is the \"rebound response\", which is the excitatory response evoked when a sufficient inhibitory stimulus is turned off. The analysis described deals separately with the two \"cutoff points\" of the velocity tuning curves. The model predicts linear relation between the low \"cutoff point\" with the integration time, and a reversed correlation to the receptive field size. The high \"cutoff point\" is reversed, correlated with the cell threshold. The predictions are confirmed using computerized simulation and physiological findings.","PeriodicalId":312019,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117091124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The underlying model is embedded in the domain of CAD-based vision using a viewer-centered approach to generate a set of normalized views. They serve as a basis for an optimal selection of properties of features. The idea of an aspect is used for grouping the values of the properties into aspect-trees. The aim of this approach is to identify fast the correct view of an object seen in the image and thereby to distinguish between different objects. Various experiments with different objects and under stepwise varied conditions clearly demonstrate the robustness of this approach and its ability of recognizing 3-D objects.","PeriodicalId":312019,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124460928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These quantities, related to the second order optical flow parameters, are useful in the computation of the motion and the structure of a 3-D rigid curve from monocular image sequences. We show that they can be estimated directly from the points of the spatio-temporal surface generated by the image curve using polynomial approximation, and that the accuracy is at least comparable and often much better than that obtained using the other standard techniques. We consider particularly the special case of curvature because the estimation of that quantity has been studied before and show the results obtained using different methods. We then propose a \"pseudo scale-space\" method that should improve further the accuracy of the results.","PeriodicalId":312019,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128370703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Image motion is represented by layers-image regions whose coherent motion can be approximated by some parametric motion model. The motion at every point is obtained by the parametric motion estimate of the entire layer, corrected by a residual flow which captures the difference between the real image motion and the layer's motion model. The new approach is able to construct accurate flow fields in the presence of multiple motions, motion boundaries, and transparent motions.","PeriodicalId":312019,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129627238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent studies have taken two separate approaches toward improving accuracy: the application of spatio-temporal filtering schemes and the use of generalized motion models such as the affine model. Each has achieved improvement in its specialized situations. We analyze the interdependency between them and propose a unified theory. The generalized motion we adopt models arbitrary 3D steady motion. Under perspective projection, we derive an image motion equation that describes the spatio-temporal relation in an image sequence, thus making 3D spatio-temporal filtering possible. Hence we establish a theory of Hermite polynomial differentiation filters, whose orthogonality and Gaussian derivative properties ensure numerical stability. The use of higher order motion constraint equations to accommodate more complex motion is justified by the algorithm's reliable performance, as demonstrated by evaluating our algorithm in the scheme established by Barron, et al. (1994).","PeriodicalId":312019,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129804730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We show that parameter estimation of a model realization corresponds to the solution of a given set of equations, which can be solved explicitly for a specific propagator function depending exclusively on identities among site labels. For a hidden model, we propose a nonsupervised, iterative scheme comprising labeling and parameter re-estimation steps. Segmentation experiments using a third order Markov mesh, together with a look-ahead algorithm for real-time label estimation, show rapid convergence of the learning algorithm and yield subjectively good results.","PeriodicalId":312019,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132433141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper introduces 24 possible distance measures based on the Hausdorff distance between two point sets. These measures can be used to match two sets of edge points extracted from any two objects. Based on experiments on synthetic images containing various levels of noise, the authors determined that one of these distance measures, called the modified Hausdorff distance (MHD) has the best performance for object matching. The advantages of MHD ever other distances are also demonstrated on several edge snaps of objects extracted from real images.","PeriodicalId":312019,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130852700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following the view that symmetry is a continuous feature, a continuous symmetry measure (CSM) has been developed to evaluate symmetries of shapes and objects. In this paper the authors extend the symmetry measure to evaluate the imperfect symmetry of fuzzy shapes, i.e. shapes with uncertain point localization. The authors find the probability distribution of symmetry values for a given fuzzy shape. Additionally, for every such fuzzy shape, the authors find the most probable symmetric shape.","PeriodicalId":312019,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130907760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results of this measure are compared with humans analyzing seven \"teaser\" images to test its effectiveness for finding perceptually dominant orientations. The use of low-level orientation is then applied to a \"quick search\" problem important in image database applications. Since both pigeons and humans are able to perform coarse classification of certain kinds of scenes, e.g., city from country, without taking time or brain-power to solve the image understanding problem, the authors conjecture that the collective behavior of low-level textural features such as orientation may be doing most of the work. The authors demonstrate a simple test of global multiscale orientation for quickly searching a database of vacation photos for likely \"city/suburb\" shots. The orientation features achieve agreement with human classification in 91 out of 98 of the scenes.","PeriodicalId":312019,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126892017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
