In every sense, figuratively and actually, the Armenians became, as Ronald Grigor Suny has poignantly put it, an “orphaned nation”. A particularly moving example of this policy was the orphanage established by Cemal Pasha in Lebanon, at Antoura, with the purpose of Islamizing and Turkifying Armenian orphans. The three memoirs by Antoura inmates, cited in this article, prove beyond a doubt that Islamization and Turkification were carried out. One of the main points made in this article is that Halide Edib, the famous Turkish nationalist and prolific writer, was very much part of the project. Appointed as the general director of education in Cemal Pasha’s Syria, she was personally involved in the project of Turkification and Islamization at Antoura, although she was later to deny it in her memoirs. Therefore, this article is as much about Halide Edib as it is about Antoura.","PeriodicalId":31125,"journal":{"name":"Etudes Armeniennes Contemporaines","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70068403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Elle part d’une interrogation sur la guerre entre le PKK et l’Etat turc durant laquelle certains habitants ont choisi de s’engager aux cotes de la guerilla, d’autres de collaborer avec l’Etat en devenant korucu, d’autres encore, tres minoritaires, de s’engager dans l’organisation islamiste Hizbullah. Par l’etude comparatiste des localites de Lice, Kulp et Silvan (au nord-est de Diyarbakir) des annees 1830 aux annees 1990, elle vise a apporter un eclairage detaille, situe, et ancre localement des phenomenes de destructuration et restructuration qui ont affecte les Kurdes de Turquie. Son approche se situe a la croisee de l’histoire et de l’anthropologie, combinant l’etude des sources ecrites et l’enquete ethnographique, notamment a travers la realisation d’une centaine d’entretiens, effectues entre 2013 et 2017 principalement dans les villages et chefs-lieux des trois terrains etudies. L’axe principal de la recherche vise a exposer comment les clivages et conflits intra-kurdes ont ete influences et determines a partir d’une serie de facteurs (dynamiques locales, appartenances tribales, recompositions internes a certaines familles, effets de socialisation et de politisation etc.). Les nœuds et interactions entre les dynamiques conflictuelles internes aux societes kurdes et la maniere dont les politiques du pouvoir central entrent en jeu dans ces configurations sont un des axes de reflexion privilegies. La perspective mobilisee s’appuie largement sur les sources orales et s’efforce de produire une histoire commune ou connectee se demarquant des historiographies kurdo-centrees et/ou « sunno-centrees », en incluant les diverses communautes ethniques ou religieuses habitant ou ayant habite la region. Elle accorde une attention particuliere aux histoires et memoires « mineures », aux formes de resistance discretes, ainsi qu’au au role de la construction et de la transmission de la memoire dans la persistance ou dans la reconfiguration des conflictualites internes. Les resultats de cette recherche, attentifs aux phenomenes de temporalite et de subjectivite, permettent de mettre en lumiere la variete des facteurs d’engagement et des loyautes impliquees dans les situations de violence opposant differents acteurs kurdes entre eux.","PeriodicalId":31125,"journal":{"name":"Etudes Armeniennes Contemporaines","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49398221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In some societies, such as in Germany, where deeper connections with the Ottoman Empire existed, these reactions involved debates about foreign policy and morality. In Germany these debates continued in the years after the massacres, especially so with the German Emperor’s trip to the Ottoman Empire in 1898. It was around this trip that a new understanding of Germany’s role in the world in relation to ethics developed. Prominent among those discussing and developing ideas was the Protestant pastor and political thinker Friedrich Naumann. This article reexamines this debate and Naumann’s role in it. It shows how the Armenian massacres played a role in internal German debates and how coming to terms with them developed a special dynamic and created unfortunate precedents for Germany.","PeriodicalId":31125,"journal":{"name":"Etudes Armeniennes Contemporaines","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70068253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Davidian","doi":"10.4000/EAC.1815","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4000/EAC.1815","url":null,"abstract":"The essay introduces the celebrated nineteenth-century Russian Armenian seascape painter Ivan (Hovhannes) Aivazovsky’s (1817-1900) Massacre of the Armenians in Trebizond in 1895 as one of the most important of the artist’s multifarious responses to the systematic series of massacres unleashed upon the Ottoman Armenian population during 1894-1897. An important document of intellectual engagement with a recorded event of wholesale massacre, the work is presented as an early manifestation of atrocity imagery within an Armenian historical context, radically introducing the representation of violence into an already established Russian Armenian visual taxonomy of Ottoman Armenian victimhood. It is a work that survives only through its mediated reproduction in Russian Armenian lawyer and editor Grigor Djanshiev’s illustrated Russian language Fraternal Help for the Suffering of the Armenians in Turkey, a tome produced to raise funds for the survivors of the mass violence and publicise the events to a wider audience. The essay examines the claim as implied in the work’s caption of the image as truthful depiction of an actual well-documented event, the 8 October 1895 massacre in the eponymous city, and asks whether it represents, rather, an imagined dramatization subordinating human drama to the artist’s customary concern for a Romantic aesthetic. The essay further considers the propagandistic attributes of the work, manifested via its mass circulation and wide dissemination, particularly as incorporated into Fraternal Help.","PeriodicalId":31125,"journal":{"name":"Etudes Armeniennes Contemporaines","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48254384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
