In our scenario, multiple spatially distributed sensor nodes estimate a physical process (viz. a moving object) and transmit quantized state estimates to a central fusion node for processing. The fusion node utilizes a BLUE (Best Linear Unbiased Estimation) approach to combine the individual sensor estimates. In this paradigm the uncertainty of the final estimate is dependent on the quantization and transmit energy levels. This makes the problem particularly challenging since power and bandwidth are critically constrained resources in WSNs. Thus, the trade-off between estimation quality and network lifetime is inherent. This work optimizes resource utilization while constraining estimation performance. Two convex formulations of the resulting Mixed-Integer Non-Linear program (MINLP) are given. Unlike most previous work, this effort heuristically incorporates the operating states of the nodes into the optimal decisions. The heuristic accomplishes a redistribution of effort, tasking healthier nodes to contribute more resources to the estimation process. Simulation results are presented for the given formulations which demonstrate the effectiveness of the heuristic for extending network lifetime.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132785533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

[1] studied this problem, using spectral area efficiency as the performance metric. We show that the analysis proposed in [1] is inaccurate as the traffic layer specifications of LTE networks is not included in the analysis. We also investigate the effect of user association and frequency band allocation schemes on energy consumption and capacity of LTE networks. Specifically, we add the following three important elements to the analysis proposed in [1]: a traffic layer analysis that take both the physical and traffic layer specifications of LTE downlink into account; a threshold-based policy to optimally associate users to base stations; and an allocation scheme to better allocate the frequency band to macro and micro base stations. We investigate all combinations of these elements through numerical evaluation and observe that 1. there are important differences between traffic layer and physical layer analysis, 2. threshold-based user association policy improve the traffic capacity of the network by up to 33% without affecting the energy profile of the network, and 3. considerable energy saving and capacity gain can be achieved thought a careful allocation of the frequency band to macro and micro base stations.\u0000 Finally, we determine the optimal network configuration and show that up to 46% saving in energy can be achieved compared to the case that no micro base stations are deployed in the network.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116823250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the proximity awareness achieved through the beaconing, safety applications can quickly detect dangerous road situations and help drivers avoid them. Recently, repetition-based protocols have been proposed to meet the requirements of timeliness and reliability for the beaconing. However, since most of existing protocols employ CSMA as their underlying medium access control strategy, they are vulnerable to interference from hidden nodes. In this paper, we propose a new broadcasting protocol called Space-Division Repetition-based Broadcasting protocol (SDRB) in order to reduce interference caused by hidden nodes. In SDRB, the geographical area where vehicles are located is divided into smaller space divisions. Vehicles within difference space divisions are allowed to transmit their beacons at different points of time in order to cope with interference from hidden nodes. From the ns-2 simulation results, we verified that SDRB provides more reliable broadcasting service due to its capability of removing such interference as compared to CSMA.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"56 1-2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114048359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Understanding the trends in the use of these networks (i.e. how much, when and where traffic is present) is becoming more relevant. Interesting results can be extracted by analyzing WLAN traces from real scenarios. In this work, three buildings are studied on two campuses in Barcelona (Spain) and its surroundings. This is the first study providing the user behavior in a European campus. Similar trends are observed in the three buildings, despite the different amount of users, purpose of the building and size of the campus. Daily and weekly patterns are shown. The population accessing the networks is mostly composed of infrequent users: less than half of the devices access the WLAN more than four days during the three months studied. Many users visiting one building associate with only one access point: despite the widespread use of lightweight devices many users are static. The main difference among different buildings is the fidelity of users: users on a small campus are more likely to reappear on different days than on a large campus, where the population is more heterogeneous. The results of this analysis provide general tools for characterizing campus-wide WLAN and a better understanding of usage and performance issues in a mature wireless network in Europe.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129477818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The provider model assumes solar energy harvesting and super-capacitor storage to supply power to a Wireless Sensor Node. Super-capacitors charge and discharge is dynamically estimated based on both power consumption in the node and solar radiation levels. On one hand, super-capacitors voltage level is refreshed within each radio mode change. However, because a radio mode can be longer than few milliseconds, refreshments are also time schedule. On the other hand, solar radiation data in CSV format (comma-separated values) can be downloaded from public meteorological data bases. The model incorporates these input data being possible to simulate from one minute to weeks or months using real radiation curves observed in a specific world location at a year period. The research presented in this paper will be very useful for the study and development of energy-efficient algorithms with energy-neutral operation to build everlasting Wireless Sensor Networks.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133722274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These applications are increasingly extended among users of battery- dependent devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets. We provide a methodology to compare the energy efficiency of different VoIP codecs for a given device. This allows users and developers to minimize the energy consumption by codec selection, and introduces a new variable into the QoS-bandwidth balance that has traditionally lead the codec selection in VoIP applications. Our results show that the codec can have a significant impact on the energy consumption attributable to the VoIP software of the portable device.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114103645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A simple Boolean interference model with the interference radius equaling the transmission radius is used to verify the operation of the method. The same approach is then applied to SINR-determined data rates. The obtained numerical results shed light on the spatial reuse problem in wireless multihop networks. In particular, for the SINR-based interference model we obtain new results. We characterize the asymptotic behavior of the sum capacity of the optimal combination of transmitting links and the fraction of transmitting nodes in the low and high interference regimes. Additionally, the numerical results establish, in the interference-limited case of high node densities, the sum capacity (spectral efficiency) to be approximately equal to 1.2 bit/s/Hz per node.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128942621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is in stark contrast to the fixed networks case, in which graph models are typically used. While expressive, spatial models are usually more difficult to analyze than graph based ones, which has resulted in adoption of oversimplified models in wireless networks research. In this paper we show how wireless networks can be modeled as graphs without losing the accuracy of spatial models. We argue based on measurements of wireless network performance that in a number of cases distance-dependent interactions between wireless nodes can be discretized with only small approximation error. This discretization immediately yields an approximation of a spatial wireless network model as a graph with multiple edge types. We study the structure of the arising graph models, and show that the choice of accurate underlying spatial model remains important. For accurate spatial models, the corresponding graph approximations have a relatively simple neighborhood structure, indicating that they can be used very effectively in performance evaluation and optimization applications.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114390788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main problem is that cellular networks are characterized by multiple simultaneous and dynamic transmissions combined with power control. The proposed approach assumes that the cognitive network knows the positions of the primary base stations and its own base stations. It utilizes a Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) to detect the activity of neighboring primary base stations and exploits this information to determine the power with which a cognitive radio can transmit. The results show the possibility of using such a method to deploy an IEEE 802.11-like network as a cognitive network under specific constraints related to the position, the number and the distribution of the spectrum monitoring sensors inside the primary network.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128851406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, by modeling the network with a random geometric graph, we propose a two-level power allocation scheme with the total power constraint which expands the min-cut of the underlying random geometric graph. Then, based on available information theoretic upper bounds on transport capacity of wireless networks, we find a new power allocation which improves such bound. As will be shown, the new bound is computed based on the largest eigenvalue of a structural matrix which depends on the random location of the nodes. Finally, it will be shown that both approaches (random geometric graph min-cut analysis and the information theoretic upper bound framework) reveal that it is a fundamental network design guideline that more power should be allocated to central nodes of the network.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123954681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
