However, achieving reliable multicast transmission in MANET is crucial due to the changeable network topology caused by the node mobility. In this paper, a novel scheme, named PBMRP (Path-based Multicast Routing Protocol for Ad-hoc Network) protocol that integrates routing layer and transport layer, is proposed to provide reliable multicast transmission by considering the maintenance effort of robust routing. The proposed scheme adopts the path information kept by each node for path restoration and can save the precious bandwidth resource when compared to traditional schemes. The simulation results show that the proposed PBMRP protocol can achieve the above objectives and is superior to that of the DSR with TCP-Reno scheme for the maintenance overhead and the path reliability.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128487612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We optimize the flow between a number of source-destination pairs to achieve a fair allocation of network resources while satisfying node capacity constraints. To account for the limitations of wireless devices, we use a path-based formulation and allow only a bounded number of paths between each source-destination pair. Incentives are considered one of the best solutions for this situation. This paper proposes a dynamic reputation-based incentive mechanism for cooperative relay in PNs. Based on reputation calculations for individual contributions of intermediate relay nodes in a cooperative relay service, the proposed scheme dynamically assigns incentives in terms of additional throughput for those cooperative relay nodes. Experimental results of two simulation scenarios show that dynamic incentives are appropriate and sustainable for motivating user participation in PNs, particularly for applications characterized by wide coverage and high data rates.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134409503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These applications create a compelling need to prioritize data traffic, so that safety and emergency, low-latency messages can be delivered in a timely fashion. The vehicular environment is one of the unique characteristics that sets VANETs apart from other ad hoc network. Therefore performance of protocols designed for VANETs cannot be tested similar to other networks. An often ignored aspect is the interaction of the vehicular topology with the prioritized data in the network. Certain elements of the vehicular topology, influence mobility and hence network connectivity which in turn affects its performance. This paper illustrates the impact that vehicular elements exhibit on prioritized data of broadcast protocols thus resulting in manipulation of network performance.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115077710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When multiple nodes contend for channel access simultaneously, the base station initiates a collision resolution epoch where a set of cooperating nodes retransmit either their own packets, if they were involved in the collision, or the signal that they heard during the collision slot, until the base station has enough linearly independent collided signals to recover the packets. The throughput and service delay of such protocols depends critically on the rate that independent signals may be generated, which in turn depends critically on the underlying channel diversity. We consider two natural models for \"imperfect\" retransmission schemes where insufficient diversity extends the duration of the retransmission epochs, thus lowering the effective throughput. The throughput optimal medium contention probabilities for both models are obtained as a function of the measure of imperfection. The analysis permits a meaningful and quantitative framework for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of cooperative retransmission MAC protocols.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123540500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wireless medium access control (MAC) protocols use distributed contention resolution mechanisms for sharing the wireless medium. Wireless nodes decide access to their channel independently and accessing the channel by a node has an influence on those of other nodes. In this environment, selfish nodes that do not obey the operation of the MAC protocol may obtain an unfair share of the channel bandwidth at the expense of well-behaved nodes.\u0000 Game theory is a useful and powerful tool to research this kind of systems. We study the effect of misbehavior in CSMA/CA wireless LANs and in particular in Idle Sense access method which has been designed to optimize the performance and fairness of the network using game theory. We show that Nash equilibrium point of our game is not an optimal point of the game. Then we find the Pareto-optimal point of our game using static game model from Nash bargaining framework. We design a prevention model to force nodes converge to the Pareto-optimal point and make the Pareto-optimal point as the Nash equilibrium point of our game. Finally, we devise a detection system to detect deviating cheaters from optimal point.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124534818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Node location within the network is very important because packet forwarding rate directly depends on this factor. Task assigned to each node is also very important because the collaboration between nodes is indispensable for the correct network operation. To demonstrate the importance of node location in the network, we have performed several experiments with different topologies and results have exposed that a Base Station located in the center of the area to monitor and surrounded by many nodes is the best solution in terms of energy consumption and load balancing.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"281 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126899419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Combined with the fact that such networks are often deployed for critical missions like forest fire detection in the WSN scenario or have to function properly and efficiently for an extended period of time, it is desirable to thoroughly test, analyze and evaluate newly developed communication protocols before deployment. In order to do this, simulations are a good compromise between cost/complexity and accuracy of the results. Since there are many simulators for wireless networks, it is often difficult to decide which one to choose. Therefore, we present a case study in which four common wireless network simulators were used to evaluate a well-known topology control protocol (SPAN). Within the case study, we describe the strengths and weaknesses of the examined network simulators: First, we evaluate the usability of the simulators in terms of different parts of the protocol developer's work process. Moreover, we also focus on the simulator's support for reusability and maintainability of simulation models by measuring particular model properties. For this purpose, we have proposed a model of quality for network simulators. The model of quality defines which properties of models to measure and how to interpret them. As opposed to other simulator comparisons, we do not focus on the correlation of the individual simulation results. Through this paper, we aim at providing a basis for finding an adequate simulator for a particular task.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122566377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
