IEEE 802.11e helps address such QoS requirements, e.g. by prioritising video over background traffic. The reliability problem occurs since it is very challenging (near impossible) for a WLAN protocol to guarantee QoS, especially with uncoordinated contention being the main access mechanism, along with increasing numbers of stations and interfering traffic, with the hostile wireless radio environment making any guarantee foolhardy. With the use of RTP, the video application has some control over end-to-end delay and jitter. Still, in the presence of excessive interference, RTP packet dropping might result in video quality degradation or video outage time. We study the reliability of wireless RTP video streaming over the EDCA MAC protocol, with the ability to forecast (and mitigate the effect of) video failures. Specifically, we introduce a model to evaluate both steady-state and transient video failures due to RTP buffer overflow, the overflow in turn due to WLAN co-channel interference. Quantitative reliability measurements are taken by configuring RTP and EDCA. We evaluate the average packet loss and average outage duration and we validate the theoretical results in an experimental setup. The proposed forecast mechanism could be coupled with and help optimise a) WLAN channel assignment, b) multipath (multi-channel/radio/hop) video routing, and c) adaptive rate control.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122807650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a new scheme to detect flooding attacks in high speed networks. The proposed mechanism is based on the application of Power Divergence measures over Sketch data structure. Sketch is used for random aggregation of traffic, and Power Divergence is applied to detect deviations between current and established probability distributions of network traffic. We focus on tuning the parameter of Power Divergence to optimize the performance. We evaluate our approach using real Internet traffic traces, obtained from MAWI trans-Pacific wide transit link between USA and Japan. Our results show that the proposed approach outperforms existing solutions in terms of detection accuracy and false alarm ratio.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"100 22","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120865679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several techniques have been proposed to evaluate the performance of WSNs; the two most popular being mathematical analysis and simulations. An important drawback of these techniques is that they provide evaluation results that usually are not similar to those of real deployments. One reason for this is the fact that both techniques introduce physical layer modeling assumptions, which do not usually corresponded to real-life environments. In this paper, we used measurements from an industrial environment to develop a new radio propagation model for use in simulators and mathematical tools. The proposed radio model was implemented in the COOJA simulator and validated against real-life results obtained from a testbed inside a running oil refinery, which were found not to conform to any legacy radio propagation model. The proposed model has been shown to successfully match the refinery testbed behavior.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131105596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Embedded technology is becoming mature, forming an enticing option for real-life deployments. Still, embedded wireless computing does not constitute a guaranteed reliable solution since transmission failures occur in the wireless medium while resource-constrained devices have battery limitations and frequent failures. In this paper, we examine the use of request queues as a mechanism to manage the communication with embedded devices. Located in a middleware application framework for smart homes, request queues offer enhanced reliability and fault tolerance, supporting multiple tenants simultaneously.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124347797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this goal, we exploit the Compressed Sensing (CS) framework, which provides a new paradigm for recovering signals being sparse in some basis by means of a limited amount of random incoherent projections. In particular, we propose a novel decentralized technique that considers the spatial correlations among the received measurements at the base stations (BSs) to provide global accurate position estimation, while reducing significantly the amount of measurements exchanged among the BSs and required for accurate positioning. We exploit the common structure of the received measurements to design a gossip-based algorithm in order to alleviate the effects of radio channel-induced signal variations on the estimation accuracy. Experimental evaluation with real data demonstrates the superiority of the proposed decentralized CS-based localization technique over traditional fingerprinting methods in terms of the achieved positioning accuracy.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121852746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A link-to-system mapping interface is a mathematical model used in system level and network simulators for accurate prediction of block error rate (BLER) for given signal propagation conditions in order to avoid direct modeling of physical layer processing in the system. The proposed model is based on using mean mutual information per bit (MMIB) between the coded bits and the received logarithms of likelihood ratio (LLR) as a link quality metric. The major feature of the proposed model is the ability to perform fast and accurate BLER prediction for an arbitrary specified code rate and a transport block size, which is especially important for accurate modeling of complex LTE-A system operation. The paper provides the principles of the link-to-system interface design and a full description of the developed model. Verification results for the proposed link-to-system mapping interface are also presented demonstrating the claimed high accuracy of the BLER prediction.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130500501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) systems with femtocell overlays aim to provide better indoor voice and data coverage and to increase network capacity. One of the major technical challenges that femtocell networks are facing nowadays, is the cross-tier interference, i.e., the interference between the femto base stations and the macrocell infrastructure. To this direction, we have designed and implemented a framework that simulates femtocell overlays integrated over LTE-A macrocellular systems. This framework focuses on the impact of cross-tier interference and furthermore is able to estimate the throughput at every point of integrated femtocell/macrocell LTE-A networks. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of this simulation framework and we provide significant experimental results obtained with the aid of this system.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125980639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this is a time consuming and challenging task. Therefore, a realistic energy-efficiency evaluation is often neglected or oversimplified by using simple theoretical models or unsuited simulation tools. In this work, we evaluate the energy-efficiency of two specific key exchange protocols, an Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman with authentication (ECDH-ECDSA) and a Kerberos based approach, while using different duty-cycling MAC layer protocols. In our evaluation, we compare the results from a theoretical model with simulation results using the AVRORA+ simulation tool and real-world measurements in our WSN testbed SANDbed. Using three MAC layer protocols, TinyOS built in Low-Power-Listening as well as S-MAC and standard 802.15.4, we show that there are several important cross-layer effects that should be considered when performing an energy-efficiency evaluation. Furthermore, we argue, that there are several evaluation metrics like the absolute energy consumption per key exchange or one key exchange per measured time interval.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133249875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While IETF work groups have standardised various mobility management protocols, such as Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6), Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6 (Predictive FMIPv6, and Reactive FMIPv6), Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6), Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) and Fast Handovers for PMIPv6 (Predictive FPMIPv6, and Reactive FPMIPv6), the decision regarding which protocol suits the future networks is still a research issue. A good analytical or evaluation model, in terms of various performance metrics like handover latency, packet density, and signalling cost during the handover, is needed to compare various mobility management protocols. In this paper, a novel analytical model in terms of the handover latency, as well as the packet density, and packet arrival rate during the handover time is developed for comparison of various mobility management protocols by applying transport engineering principles in the field of telecommunication. The model enables us to make a few important observations regarding the performance of these mobility management protocols.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"209 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134475247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The resource allocation problem for multimedia users in a multi-cell SSR network is formulated as a non-cooperative game with each cell acting as a player whose aim is to maximise the number of low priority users who can reach their QoS subject to the premise that all high priority users in that cell can achieve their QoS. To achieve this, we propose a distributed QoS-aware and user- priority-aware subcarrier (SC) allocation algorithm to reach the Nash Equilibrium of the game. Simulation results verify the validity of the proposed algorithm: it can achieve good performance in terms of both throughput and the number of qualified users; particularly important is that it exhibits fast convergence. We implement the proposed algorithm on three system models to investigate the impact of inter-cell interference (ICI) on the performance.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115914871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
